    Webinar #51

    May 7, 2021
“SOS: SAVE OUR SYSTEMS FROM THE COVID-19 SURGE”
    Special Topic

The recent surge of COVID-19 cases in the National Capital Region and contiguous areas has had profound effects on our health care systems: hospitals that are barely able to accommodate COVID and non-COVID patients, LGUs that are unable to keep up with the pace of testing and contact tracing needed, communities that are going hungry with the extended quarantines.

In this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS, the Philippine General Hospital shares its lessons learned from a surge in early March that shut down certain parts of the hospital.  The webinar will include a discussion on the important role that genetic sequencing has played in affirming and prioritizing contact tracing, isolation, and education of individuals who may have been exposed to patients who have contracted any of the new variants.  The role of telemedicine in decongesting the crowded hospitals of Metro Manila is presented.

Dr. Nina Berba, head of infectious disease control at PGH will be the main presenter.  Reactors are Dr. Gap Legaspi, PGH Director; Dr. Eva Cutiongco de la Paz, National Institutes of Health Executive Director; Dr. Raymond Sarmiento, Director of the National TeleHealth Center, National Institutes of Health; and Dr. Sito Nunez, Chief of East Avenue Memorial Medical Center.

Join us in an in-depth discussion on how to save our systems from the COVID19 surge – the role of technology: genetic sequencing and telemedicine, and the race against time to stop COVID deaths.

Stay Safe. Stay Healthy. Stay Connected!

Together we can STOP COVID DEATHS!

The University of the Philippines Alumni Association in America, Inc. (UPAAA), University of the Philippines Alumni Association Arizona Chapter, Inc. (UPAAAz), and University of the Philippines Alumni Association New Jersey Chapter, Inc. (UPAANJ) invite you to a Mother’s Day virtual concert: “Alay Kay Inay“ in celebration of Mother’s Day.  This is a fundraising event to benefit the scholarship program of the sponsoring UPAAs.  While the tuition fees of the University of the Philippines are free, financially challenged students still need assistance to defray miscellaneous costs of their education, especially during this pandemic.

The virtual concert will be held on Friday, May 7, 2021 at 7:30 PM Eastern Time.  The concert proper begins at 8:00 PM.  Headlining the invited performers are famed Cecile Azarcon-Inocentes, Philippines’ legendary and highly- acclaimed songwriter and singer, whose music has been recorded and sang by Filipino and international artists; and Maestro Robert Shroder, resident conductor of the Filipino American Symphony Orchestra, who led and guided the only musical ensemble in California committed to the enrichment of Filipino culture through orchestra music.   Another notable performer at this concert is US – based Pinoy band Sounds of Manila, a successful nine-member band who has successfully carved a niche in the US with their music.   The concert organizer carefully vetted the artists who will share their musical talents for the listening pleasure of the audience.

One of the highlights of the event is the set of dedicated 30 or 60 second video clips honoring one’s mother which will be featured during the concert.  For more information, please check out the Eventbrite event page for available sponsorships, or e-mail  [email protected].

    10:00 AM-12:00 PM
    May 10, 2021

“The force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field created by all living things…it binds the galaxy together.”, Obi-Wan Kenobi once told Luke Skywalker. We, too, are empowered and bound to each other by the planet we live on. In this next webinar hosted by the College of Science Lecture Series in the University of the Philippines-Baguio, “Exploring Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) in Conservation”, the interwoven nature of issues in the society and environmental conservation are probed.

Like the Jedi Knights, guardians of peace and order in the Star Wars galaxy, we join the speaker Ms. Socorro Martha Meg-ay Daupan, as she shares her experiences as the Program Manager for the University of Michigan-Yale School of Environment Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program. The role of diverse representation in designing equitable and sustainable solutions will be discussed, as conservation has always been the socio-ecological responsibility of all.

    Webinar #52
    May 14, 2021

“NALILITO PA RIN AKO: FAQs on COVID-19 Vaccination”
    Special Topic

Vaccine hesitancy is still a barrier to achieving better control of the spread of SARSCoV2 in the Philippines. While this is not unique to our country, the questions and doubts need to be continuously addressed.  There are still many who feel ambivalent.  Seniors doubt whether they really need a vaccine if they are just staying at home.  Others don’t know where to go for vaccination. There are debates about the brands and their safety. Some have received one shot and want to switch to another brand.  Some are still concerned about allergies and adverse reactions. Let us talk about all of these issues.

Why are many still confused about vaccination?  Maybe it is the lack of information?  Maybe it is misinformation?  Maybe it is conflicting information. Maybe it is because this information is constantly changing as science tries to catch up with different aspects of vaccination and the pandemic as a whole.

In this week’s episode of STOP COVID DEATHS, the discussion will be fully focused on questions from the audience. So, this is the opportunity to ask your questions on COVID-19 vaccination or to find ways of framing your response to frequently asked questions on vaccination. DOH Director for Knowledge and Information Technology Systems Dr. Eric Tayag, will provide a brief overview on causes of confusion about vaccination.  Dr. Ted Herbosa, Special Adviser of the National COVID-19 Task Force and Dr. Anna Ong-Lim, infectious disease specialist at the UP PGH will serve on the panel of discussants.   Dr. Nina Gloriani, Lead of the Vaccine Expert Panel and Former Dean of the UP College of Public Health will open the meeting.  Closing Remarks will be done by UP College of Medicine Dean, Dr. Charlotte M. Chiong.

Stay Safe. Stay Healthy. Stay Connected!

Together we can STOP COVID DEATHS!

The UP Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (EEEI) would like to invite you to the second installment of the TEEECHtalks Series – the Beginners’ Guide to Latex and Overleaf workshop by Prof. Rhandley D. Cajote, on 14 May 2021 (Friday), 9:30am – 11:30am via Zoom.

LaTeX is a high-quality typesetting system; and is available as free software. It has features designed for the production of technical and scientific documents and the de facto standard for the communication and publication in the scientific community. With the demand to provide more tools for collaboration, Overleaf was developed as a collaborative, cloud-based LaTeX editor. This workshop will provide participants a guide on how to start developing documents and presentations in LaTeX using Overleaf.

This workshop is for those who want to learn LaTeX and how to use Overleaf to edit and publish. Undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, faculty, and practicing engineers in the field of science and engineering are welcome to participate in this workshop.

      Important
It is ideal if participants sign-up for a free Overleaf account at https://www.overleaf.com prior to the workshop. You just need an email address to sign-up. Participants will also be given a copy of the presentation materials in LaTeX and available in Overleaf.

This event is free of charge but registration is required to join. Registration link: http://bit.ly/LaTeXandOverleaf

MAY SUNOG! Ligtas na Paglikas sa Panahon ng COVID-19
    Special Topic

What happens when a fire hits a hospital in the dark of the night during a pandemic? What happens when that hospital is the largest COVID-19 referral hospital in the country — and operating rooms and the emergency room is shut down?  How can patients be safely evacuated when a crisis strikes a hospital dealing with a highly infectious disease? What must hospitals do to prepare for a disaster during a pandemic?

In this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS, “May Sunog! Ligtas na Paglikas sa Panahon ng COVID-19” takes a close and intimate look at the recent fire that hit the Central Block of the Philippine General Hospital on May 16. PGH had gone through repeated drills for various types of disasters — so despite the size and intensity of the fire — had zero casualties. While the actual damage to property is yet undetermined, this is a story about how other neighboring hospitals stepped up in true Bayanihan spirit to help hundreds of patients who were displaced by this single fire.  Interviews with frontliners during the fire reveal the courage, resilience and dedication of our health workers during a highly traumatizing  event.

Dr. Rodney Dofitas, a senior surgeon and who just happened to be at PGH that evening recounts his story of how he had to lead the evacuation response and work with firefighters until the incident command system was set up.  Dr. Gap Legaspi, PGH Director will talk about the decisions that needed to be taken and how the hospital will get back on its feet.  Dr Charlie Gundran, Head of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management in UP Manila will present the disaster preparedness plans and drills of the Philippine General Hospital for any crisis.  Reactors, Dr. Nina Berba will talk about infection control risks in emergencies, Dr. Stella Marie Jose, PGH Deputy Director for Health Operations will talk about the evacuation of children with cancer, and Dr. Jonas del Rosario will discuss communication and working with media.

Join us as we discuss how disaster preparedness plans and drills are critical to our hospitals during the pandemic.

Stay Safe. Stay Healthy. Stay Connected!

Together we can STOP COVID DEATHS!

    2:00 PM-4:00 PM

The Museum of a History Ideas of the University of the Philippines Manila is hosting a talk by the independent curator MS. MARIAN PASTOR ROCES (TAOINC.). She curated the Museum in 2014 and implemented the Curatorial Plan for it. She will speak on Pandemic and Cultural Change.

She will revisit the themes on which the museum was built in order to reflect on the present. The connecting link is devastating disease—the cholera epidemic and Spanish flu immediately prior to the establishment of the UP aswell as the on-going COVID-19 pandemic—and the massive cultural change that follow in the wake of these catastrophic events.

Roces will be joined by Architect Leonido Gines, Jr. who collaborated on the UP museum. He will annotate the talk with a particular perspective informed by the tropical architecture of UP Philippine General Hospital. Both speaker and annotator take a Cultural Studies approach to their work.
