Torrential rains in many parts of the country have resulted in flooding and evacuation of thousands of people from low-lying areas. Against the backdrop of a highly transmissible variant of COVID-19, there are multiple and complex threats to health that need attention.

Recently, the Department of Health warned the public against a possible increase in cases of leptospirosis from wading in flooded areas. This disease is not new in the country and there is treatment for it. But some symptoms are like COVID-19.

Evacuations because of floods may lead to exposure to COVID-19 if evacuation areas are not properly ventilated or if there is congestion and crowding.

An increase in leptospirosis as well as COVID-19 will extract high demands on a health system that is already exhausted.

In this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS, we will take a look at the situation in relation to leptospirosis from a report from Director Eric Tayag of the Department of Health. Dr. Mahar Lagmay of UP Resilience Institute and UP NOAH Center will talk about the climate change challenges facing the country and will share a map of areas at risk for continuous flooding in the months ahead. Infectious disease specialist Dr. Rontgene Solante of San Lazaro Hospital will discuss leptospirosis, its clinical signs and its management as differentiated from COVID-19. Dr Nina Gloriani, Lead in the Vaccine Expert Panel and Former Dean of UP College of Public Health will talk about the public health aspects of leptospirosis – how it is transmitted, what precautions are needed, what we need to do to prevent outbreaks. Dr Romina Danguilan of the NKTI will talk about severe leptospirosis and its effects on the kidneys.

Be on top of the issues through your credible on-line community.
Join us on Friday, August 6: “COVID-19 na, Lepto pa!” It’s a date!

Stay Safe. Stay Healthy. Stay Connected!

  • Cartografía: A Webinar on Mapping of Panay Island from the 16th through the 19th Centuries
    2:00 PM-4:00 PM
    August 6, 2021

    FREE WEBINAR!

Cartografía: A Webinar on Mapping of Panay Island from the 16th through the 19th Centuries

Friday, August 6, 2021 | 2PM – 4PM | Live on Zoom and Ang Panublion Museum FB Page.

    You’re all invited!

The use of maps in the study of history and culture comes with several purposes. Foremost, maps serve as tools for reconstructing the past, to the extent that maps provide records of features, landscape, cities, and places that may not exist anymore or that exist in dramatically transformed form.

The Philippine Map Collectors Society has most recently released the special issue of the Murillo Bulletin, titled “Mapping of Panay”, where the researcher, Atty. Raphael P.M. Lotilla, discussed the naming and mapping of Panay Island from the 16th through the 19th century. Another article in this special issue written by Dr. Felice Noelle Rodriguez discusses the photographic works of Felix Laureano, which captures the way of life of the people of Panay.

In this webinar series, Ang Panublion Museum, in partnership with Capiz State University Roxas City Main Campus Library and the University of San Agustin – Center for Heritage and Indigenous Cultures, brings together these two respected historians to discuss to us the highlights that would enrich our knowledge about history and culture through maps and photographs.

    Resource persons:
    • Atty. Raphael P.M. Lotilla, Faculty, UP College of Law / former Secretary, Department of Energy
    • Dr. Felice Noelle M. Rodriguez, Visiting Scholar, Ateneo de Zamboanga University / former Chair, History Department, Ateneo de Manila University

    Webinar #65
    August 13, 2021

“Children Bearing Children during the COVID-19 Pandemic”

    Special Topic

Aside from the crisis brought by COVID-19, teen-age pregnancy is yet another emergency in the Philippines that started way before the pandemic. As of 2019, the Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) reported 178,000 births to teen-age mothers. Put another way, that is close to 500 children giving birth to children every day.

What happens when this rate of teen-age pregnancy continues with a COVID-19 pandemic in the backdrop? Pregnant teens are considered high risk and should give birth in hospitals under careful guidance of health professionals. Good counseling and follow-up is necessary to ensure that second pregnancies in the teen years are avoided for the health of the girls and their children. Are pregnant teens able to access good prenatal and antenatal care during a pandemic? What are the risks to pregnant teens who develop COVID-19? What are the risks for low birth weight and maternal death? How do teen-age girls cope with pregnancy in a time of economic hardship?

These and many other questions will be discussed at the 65th UP Webinar of Stop COVID Deaths co-sponsored by the Philippine Obstetric and Gynecologic Society (POGS) with Opening Remarks from the current president, Dr. Benjamin Cuenca. The main presenter is Dr. Juan “Jeepy” Perez, Undersecretary and Executive Director of the Commission on Population and Development. Reactors are Dr. Emma Llanto, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Adolescent Medicine, UP-PGH; Dr. Josefina Natividad, Former Director, UP Population Institute; Honorable Maria Ofelia O. Alcantara, Mayor, Municipality of Tolosa, Leyte. Closing Remarks by Jose Miguel R. Dela Rosa, NEDA Undersecretary for Corporate Affairs.

Join us as we discuss: “Children bearing Children during the COVID-19 Pandemic” and learn how we can play a role in preventing teen-age pregnancies, repeat teen pregnancies, and provide care and support that is appropriate to girls at risk during the pandemic.

Stay Safe. Stay Healthy. Stay Connected!

Together we can STOP COVID DEATHS!

Artmaking has flipped new pages for artists in the midst of a pandemic, glossing over the possible effects of isolation and depression that come with the times.

Call it sublimation, the human agency’s potential to rechannel pent-up energies into more meaningful and creative pursuits. An artist’s brush distills images on canvas, and, in the process, giving form and substance to valued objects.

“Efflorescence” is a twinbill featuring the works of Meg Yandoc and Helga Payawal-Vergara, proud UPLB alumni and members of Sigma Delta Phi. Their works, done in their unique acrylic and watercolor style, speak not only of their individual aesthetics but also of their advocacy for the preservation of our endemic flora.

Notwithstanding the volatility and uncertainty of the times, there is art that keeps us grounded and affirms our humanity. There are artists with passion for their craft, making us treasure our sense of community. (jryapo)

Sulong 2021! Padayon!

    Webinar #67
    August 27, 2021
“Breakthrough Infections: Bakunado na Ako, Bakit COVID (+) Ako Ngayon?”
    Special Topic

“Breakthrough infections” from COVID-19 are possible because of the high transmissibility of the Delta Variant. All vaccines are effective in minimizing the risk of severe illness, hospitalization and death. But infection is possible among those who are fully vaccinated.

What are the risk factors that contribute to breakthrough infections? Are breakthrough infections among the vaccinated like infections among the unvaccinated? If one has been fully-vaccinated but is COVID-19 (+), can the infection be spread within the home? How can frontliners who are fully-vaccinated continue to protect themselves from infection? What precautions are needed in hospitals to prevent the spread of the Delta variant?

These and many other questions will be tackled by the STOP COVID DEATHS Webinar #67 entitled: “Breakthrough Infections: Bakunado na Ako, Bakit COVID (+) Ako Ngayon?” Main presenter will be Dr. Regina P. Berba, Head of the Hospital Infection Control Unit at the Philippine General Hospital. Reactors are: Dr. Benilda B. Galvez, Retired Manager of the Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine Department of the Lung Center of the Philippines; and Atty. Maria Anthonette C. Velasco, Chief Operating Officer of the Philippine Tourism Promotion Board. Opening Remarks will be done by Dr. Eric Tayag, Director for Knowledge Management Information Systems, Department of Health, and Closing Remarks will be by Dr. Charlotte M. Chiong, Dean of the UP College of Medicine.

Be a part of the solution. Join the credible on-line community discussion on the latest information regarding the Delta Variant and vaccinations.

Stay Safe. Stay Healthy. Stay Connected!

Together we can STOP COVID DEATHS!

  • Zoomcoming Film Treats! Set Two: BAGONG SIBOL
    12:00 PM-2:00 PM
    August 27, 2021

OAR and UPV Division of Humanities bring you

    Zoomcoming Film Treats!

    Set 2: Bagong Sibol

Watch out for the film to be premiered here on August 27, 2021, 12:00 PM.

    About the set:
BAGONG SIBOL: Films from the Emerging Filmmakers of UP Visayas

While these nine films initially started as a class project for filmmaker Arden Rod Condez’s Directing the Narrative class, they developed into a collection of poignant stories told through the fresh perspective of some of the region’s most promising young filmmakers. All nine films were created with disarming sincerity to tackle a variety of subjects like love, loneliness, identity, and grief, daring to ask questions that frequently plague the human condition. What makes these films even more remarkable is that they were filmed in October 2020, a difficult time marked by pandemic-related restrictions and uncertainty.

Six from the showcase were then selected for the 33rd Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video, the longest-running independent film competition in the country. Three of the said films then became part of the Viddsee Juree Awards Visayas and Mindanao, where two films won Silver Prize and the Audience Choice Award. One reached the international scene as it is currently competing in this year’s Sea Shorts Film Festival in Malaysia, a highly credible short film fest for Southeast Asian filmmakers programmed by renowned filmmakers and film programmers.

Sulong 2021! Padayon!
