Webinar #94 April 1, 2022 “BATA, BATA, BAKUNADO KA NA BA? Pediatric Vaccination Updates”
Vaccination has proven to be an effective tool for controlling COVID-19 in the adult population. Though reinfection is still possible, vaccination of adults reduces individual risk for complications of COVID-19 and hospitalization associated with severe disease. It also prevents transmission of the virus in the general population.
Recently, information campaigns have shifted to vaccination in the pediatric age group 6-12 years old. Children can benefit from vaccination because they can also get very sick from COVID-19, such as multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C). The literature points to short and long term complications from COVID-19 for children. And unvaccinated children can contribute to viral transmission.
Parents, grandparents, guardians and other significant individuals of the child are highly encouraged to know more about the vaccines so that an informed decision can be made by the family with the child. It is important to speak with children about the vaccine so that they will not be afraid.
How can children avail of vaccinations? Can private pediatricians give the COVDI-19 vaccine? Are schools doing vaccination for COVID-19? Where can people go for assistance and additional information?
In this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS, we will discuss updates on pediatric vaccinations with one of the leading infectious disease experts in the country, Dr. Anna Lisa T. Ong-Lim, Professor of Pediatrics, UP-PGH. Dr. Patricia Alcasabas, Head of the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at the UP-PGH will speak about COVID-19 vaccination in high-risk situations like childhood cancer. Veteran broadcaster and health advocate Niña Corpus will be a Reactor as a mom and a health reporter. The meeting will be opened by Dr. Edna Sarah Clemente-Morada, President of the Philippine Ambulatory Pediatric Association with a special message from the President of the Philippine Medical Association, Dr. Benito P. Atienza. Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose, the Deputy Director for Health Operations with the UP-PGH.

Webinar #95 April 8, 2022 “ARE THERE MORE CONTAGIOUS VARIANTS LIKE OMICRON XE? Alamin kung magkaka-COVID-19 surge ulit”
There is a general sense of relief and an anticipation that we are at the tail-end of the pandemic. And yet as we enjoy new freedoms in the Philippines — we hear of spikes, lockdowns, and rising cases in neighboring parts of the Region. What is the variant spreading in China – resulting in the lockdown of 25 million people in Shanghai City? What variant is increasing cases in South Korea? A few days ago, WHO announced it was closely monitoring Omicron XE, a subvariant and hybrid from two different types of sub-variants, that could emerge to be a more transmissible variant than the recent variant of Omicron BA.2. Is it possible that there are new emerging variants that are more contagious than Omicron?
Vaccination has had a significant positive impact on reducing disease transmission. But the lingering concern is whether or not we can sustain a low transmission status given the possibility of “super-spreader” events with the coming Holy Week and campaign events for the Elections. Of course, there are also concerns that the new variants may be resistant to vaccines.
In this week’s webinar of STOP COVID DEATHS, we bring you one of the leading epidemiologists in the country, Dr. John Q. Wong of EpiMetrics, Inc., who will walk us through trends in the Philippines and provide global updates. The second speaker is Dr. Cynthia P. Saloma of the Philippine Genome Center, who will discuss how genome sequencing will be a key strategy for monitoring. The webinar will be opened by Dr. Eva Marie Cutiongco-dela Paz, Executive Director of the National Institutes of Health at the University of the Philippines Manila, while the Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Carmencita D. Padilla, Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Manila.

Webinar #96 April 22, 2022 “GITING AT TAPANG SA PANAHON NG PANDEMYA: Reflecting on COVID-19 Lessons”
It has been two years since we started the STOP COVID DEATHS webinar series… time flies! We never thought we would see the light at the end of the tunnel — we can see it now, but we are not out of the tunnel yet.
Looking back, what have we learned? Did our health services become better organized? Did we find ways of financing the tremendous demands on goods and services? Did we train our doctors and nurses well during the pandemic? Were we able to turn this crisis into an opportunity to create reforms in health care systems? Through the eyes of frontliners, patients and researchers – we bring together four leaders, representing four generations — who have contributed to the overall response to COVID-19 and asked them to share their personal insights on what we have learned and how we move forward.
“GITING AT TAPANG SA PANAHON NG PANDEMYA: Reflecting on COVID-19 Lessons” will focus on what we all had to do to overcome our fear of the unknown and to trust each other to battle an unseen virus as it swept the nation. The impact on frontliners has been tremendous: from the early days of discrimination and stigma; to the surges where our frontliners got sick, and for some sacrificed their lives. The episode is not meant to dwell on life stories, but to demonstrate how these four leaders took the life stories and turned them into positive change in our systems – moving toward the goal of universal health care. You will hear about their innovations, but you will also hear about some of the stories that inspired them to persevere and to inspire others.
The conversation will be more like a round table discussion: Dr. Albert Francis E. Domingo, recently appointed as Concurrent Director III of the DOH Communication Office and Disease Prevention and Control Bureau, comes with the perspective of the generation on deck – the next cohort of leaders who took to the field and worked with LGUs on organizing the COVID-19 response on the ground and equipped themselves with the skills needed for the crisis.
National Scientist, Dr. Ernesto Domingo, who first organized the Universal Health Care (UHC) study group in 2008, will reflect on what has happened 12 years after this policy shift was conceptualized and how important it is to stay the course on UHC.
Dr. Gerardo ‘Gap’ Legaspi, PGH Director during the pandemic, infected with COVID not just once and weathered the decision to transform PGH into a COVID-19 referral center, rescued people and equipment during a fire, organized and reorganized the PGH wards during 3 surges and encountered countless, endless challenges in running one of the largest hospitals in the country – will talk about an elegant and simple way to organize health care delivery services beyond the pandemic.
Dr Charlotte M. Chiong, Dean of the UP College of Medicine brought vision and outside the box administrative interventions — on how to continue to train the doctors despite the high risk and vulnerability of medical students – choosing to continue education through any means possible and to inculcate the value of research and new knowledge in a fastly evolving health crisis. She will also share her insights on the mental health of doctors in training during the pandemic.
Opening Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Teodoro J. Herbosa, who made it possible to set up the TVUP STOP COVID DEATHS Webinar Series as an inter-university project, became National Adviser of the COVID-19 Response Task Force that ultimately made it possible for tens of millions of vaccines to enter the country and create a very significant level of protection during the crisis. He will reflect on the national response, its challenges and pitfalls, but also the approaches that worked and need to be continued as we move forward.
Finally, the Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by University of the Philippines Manila Chancellor, Dr. Carmencita D. Padilla, whose invaluable support and unwavering commitment to the webinar cemented our success.

Webinar #97 April 29, 2022 “BATANG BIGLANG HINDI MAKALAKAD: Siryosohin Natin ang Tigdas”
As we enter the third year of our on-line community webinar on Stop COVID Deaths, we transition to broader discussions on how the pandemic has affected health outcomes beyond COVID-19. We will still maintain the title “STOP COVID DEATHS,” but will expand our discussions to C: Current COVID-19 problems; O: Other outbreaks; V: Viruses; I: infections; D: Disasters. Hence, Stop C.O.V.I.D Deaths, levels up to take a closer look at other emerging health problems in the community – while we keep an eye out for COVID-19 developments here in the Philippines and in the rest of the world.
This week, using a Virtual Grand Rounds format, we will discuss the case of a healthy eight year old honor student who a month prior to admission – while playing had sudden episodes of falling forward with jerking of her leg. This would happen once or twice a day. Two weeks prior to admission, the family noticed she could not remember things and was unable to concentrate on her studies. Later this progressed to difficulty in walking and loss of her ability to control her bowel movements. What could this be?
The team took a detailed history and ran tests. History revealed that this child was not vaccinated for measles, had the infection and was asymptomatic until four years later. Could this still be a complication of measles? Many tend to think that measles is a mild disease and that natural immunity after an infection is sufficient to save a child from the complications of measles. This case shows otherwise. Measles in the unvaccinated child can cause severe complications years after the episode – resulting in conditions that can no longer be treated.
How are we doing with routine vaccination against measles? Vaccination coverage for measles dropped more than six years ago – – – despite the catch-up supplemental vaccination activities, could there be more children who are still prone to the complications of measles?
Did the pandemic make it more difficult to sustain measles vaccination coverage? What kind of complications could arise for children who missed their vaccinations in the past few years? Can they still have a measles shot if they missed it during the pandemic?
