Webinar #98 May 6, 2022 “NIRMATRELVIR-RITONAVIR, MOLNUPIRAVIR, AT REMDESIVIR: May mabisang gamot na ba laban sa COVID-19?”
After two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been great strides in our scientific understanding of the SARSCov2 virus and its variants — paving the way for vaccination as a foundation for prevention, and home-based antiviral drugs for early treatment, to decrease the risks for hospitalization from severe COVID and preventable deaths.
From the early days of fake news around the use of certain drugs to prevent COVID-19, the scientific community can now comfortably say there are specific treatments for COVID-19 that can be used at home and in hospitals.
Recently, WHO made a strong recommendation for nirmatrelvir and ritonavir, sold under the name Paxlovid, for mild and moderate COVID-19 patients at highest risk of hospital admission, calling it the “best therapeutic choice for high-risk patients to date”.
However, not all countries are able to avail of the drugs. In the Philippines, these treatments are already available, but there is limited public discussion on this.
This WHO recommendation is based on new data from two randomized controlled trials involving 3,078 patients. The data show that the risk of hospitalization is reduced by 85% following this treatment. In a high-risk group (over 10% risk of hospitalization), that means 84 fewer hospitalizations per 1,000 patients.
In this episode of Stop C.O.V.I.D. Deaths, two leading experts in COVID-19 management will discuss the current medicines available for home use as well as hospitalized patients. Dr. Franco Felizarta, a US-based Infectious Disease & Internal Medicine Specialist and a member of the UP Medical Alumni Association in America (UPMASA) will discuss nirmatrelvir with ritonavir, (Paxlovid) as a drug of choice for home-based care; while Dr. Ralph Elvi Villalobos, a Consultant with the Division of Pulmonary Medicine from the Philippine General Hospital will discuss the standard of care for hospitalized patients. Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by the Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Manila, Dr. Carmencita D. Padilla.
Join us as we learn about the latest anti-virals and how treatment plays a critical role in controlling the pandemic. See you then!

People will be talking, analyzing and dissecting this Presidential Elections 2022 for years to come. Was Google Trends a better predictor than the Presidential Surveys? Webinar #99 May 13, 2022 “ISA PA NGA: Kailangan ba talaga ng 2nd COVID-19 Booster?”
Three weeks ago, the Secretary of Health approved the recommendation of the Health Technology Assessment Council (HTAC) to give a fourth dose (or second booster) of the COVID-19 vaccines AstraZeneca, Sinovac, Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and Sinopharm to the immunocompromised population for ages 18 years old and above. These individuals are those who have been receiving cancer treatment or those receiving immunosuppressants, and also those with advanced or untreated HIV infection, among others.
Recently, clamors from the healthcare workers sector as well as from senior citizens, and overseas foreign workers have spurred the discussion to expand the giving of the 4th dose to these cohorts. In fact, in countries such as Israel, the rollout of the 4th dose has been rolled out several weeks ago. However, the recommendation for the Philippine government is to enhance the coverage of the primary series doses across the priority groups.
In this episode of Stop COVID Deaths, two leading experts in immunology will discuss the latest on COVID-19 booster doses and the rapidly evolving evidence surrounding these. Dr. Marysia Recto will discuss the Clinical Evidence for recommending the 2nd booster dose for the different populations, while Dr. Jenifer Otadoy-Agustin will talk about the immunologic side effects with a review of Adverse Events following Immunization in the Philippines. Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose, Deputy Director for Health Operations of the UP Philippine General Hospital.

This year, in pursuit of our call as future health professionals to serve the Filipino people, the 45th Medicine Student Council is launching #OurShot: A COVID-19 Booster Vaccination Drive. #OurShot aims to address the immediate need of the country’s COVID-19 vaccination efforts. This serves to aid the efforts of our LGUs’ vaccination efforts, as well as to curtail the need of the student body and staff with regards to receiving COVID-19 boosters.
It also aims to address vaccine hesitancy in those who are still skeptical and hesitant to get themselves and their families vaccinated, specifically for the COVID-19 booster. The booster vaccination drive will be happening on May 14, 2022 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the UP College of Dentistry Lobby. The initiative is estimated to cater to 100 to 150 the students, staff, and faculty of UP Manila seeking COVID-19 booster shots.

Webinar #100 May 20, 2022 “MYSTERIOUS HEPATITIS: May kinalaman ba sa COVID-19?”
Viral hepatitis is a major cause of mortality in the world, mainly due to hepatitis B and C viruses. The main intervention to prevent this is childhood vaccination, given at birth and in 3 doses.
In mid-April 2022, the World Health Organization reported cases of acute hepatitis of unknown origin among children below 16. The illness is acute and severe prompting liver transplants in some children abroad. Initially, 163 cases were reported mainly from the United Kingdom, Spain, Israel, the USA, Denmark, Ireland and other European countries.
Since then, the number of cases that have been reported have significantly increased according to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control and the worldwide report is now 450, including 11 deaths in Indonesia, Palestine and the United States.
As of May 10, cases are reported in Argentina (8), Brazil (16), Canada (7), Costa Rica (2), Indonesia (15), Israel (12), Japan (7), Panama (1), Palestine (1), Serbia (1), Singapore (1), South Korea (1), USA (109+).
The phenomenon is of interest as this form of hepatitis seems to be caused by the adenovirus (which rarely causes liver inflammation); and some posit that a percentage of these children test positive for adenovirus with SARSCoV2.
Earlier data in the Philippines, point to endemicity of Hepatitis B and C with a Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) prevalence of about 17% among adults in the early 2000’s.
Will this new virus come to our country? If it does, are we prepared to manage these cases – when our own response to Hepatitis B and C leave much to be desired?
Let us take a closer look at how a novel hepatitis-like disease could impact on our current programs on hepatitis prevention and control and how we can find ways to detect/test, treat and manage this if it comes to our shores. Let us also review what we know about Hepatitis, the basics, vaccination, treatment and referral.
Our experts for this Webinar are: Dr. Juliet Sio-Aguilar, a Pediatric Gastroenterologist who is a former Professor of Pediatrics at the University of the Philippines Manila and an Active Consultant at St. Luke’s Medical Center. Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose, Deputy Director for Health Operations at the UP Philippine General Hospital.

Webinar #101 May 27, 2022 “Ang Pagpapasuso sa Panahon ng Pandemya”
The COVID-19 lockdown created a baby boom as hundreds of thousands were unable to access birth control and stayed home. It is estimated that an additional 214,000 unplanned babies were born during the pandemic, adding to the yearly 1.7 million births a year. The most worrisome information is that 40-60,000 births were among minors.
With so many women exposed to COVID-19 while pregnant and lactating, information about how best to stay safe and protect both mothers and babies is needed, particularly for very young mothers who were unprepared for pregnancy.
Should pregnant women be vaccinated? If a pregnant mom gets COVID should she still be vaccinated? Is it safe to breastfeed if one has COVID? Is it safe for a lactating mom to receive COVID vaccination?
Breastfeeding is still the foundation for healthy development of an infant regardless of the pandemic. Currently, breastfeeding rates have stagnated at 29% pre-pandemic, and while the goal is to increase the number of women who breastfeed their newborns up to 6 months to 50%, renewed efforts need to consider the effects of COVID-19 and reassure mothers that it is safe to breastfeed even if one has COVID and that the vaccinations are safe for pregnant women.
As frontliners, we need to give clear and conclusive advice to pregnant and lactating women to alleviate their fears and empower them to take care of themselves and their newborns during the pandemic – particularly to sustain breastfeeding with proper precautions.
In this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS, Dr. Stella Marie Legaspi-Jose, Obstetrician-Gynecologist and Deputy Director for Operations of the UP Philippine General Hospital will discuss the importance of breastfeeding during the pandemic and what advise frontliners can give to mothers. Dr. Aurora Gloria I. Labadia of the PGH Milk Bank will talk about breastmilk banking and ways to support and sustain breastfeeding.
Join us in this episode entititled ”Ang Pagpapasuso sa Panahon ng Pandemya” and learn the latest, evidence-based information to protect moms and their newborns during the pandemic.

[Public Lecture] A Brief History of K-pop: The Product of Exchange within ASIA DATE: 27 May (Fri) 2pm (PHL) SPEAKER: Hojai Jung (Journalist; PhD candidate in Asian Studies, National University of Singapore)
ABSTRACT: K-pop is definitely not a unique product of Korea. Although it was born in Korea, there are many external factors involved. Especially the Asian elements are overwhelming. For example, Japanese institutions, Chinese philosophy, American technology, Hong Kong’s ‘atmosphere’, and ASEAN’s various talents and consumers are combined. The development of K-pop in Korea certainly goes hand in hand with the development of democracy in Korea. In this talk, I will discuss how to understand modern Korean history through K-pop wherein Hallyu and K-pop can be understood as the main glues that can ‘make’ one Asia.
