    Webinar #106
    July 1, 2022
“COVID-19 SURGE IN EUROPE: Susunod ba tayo?”

There is a significant rise in COVID-19 cases in European countries due to highly infectious sub-variants of Omicron, raising fear of a new global wave of disease as immunity declines and summer travel has increased.

The United Kingdom, Portugal, Germany, France, Greece, Australia, Italy, Switzerland and Spain are all reporting rising infections. Some studies show that the two new sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5 are able to evade the immune system and that neither previous infections nor vaccines are providing particularly strong protection.

Thus far, the sub-variants are not associated with more severe illness. However, their spread could result in an uptick in infections and further mutations.

In the United Kingdom, a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases of hospitalizations have been reported in the media. Increasing COVID-19 cases in the United States have also been reported.

Given the number of overseas Filipinos in Europe, the war in Ukraine and more frequent international travel — we will stop to talk about what this surge in Europe means to the world and more specifically, what does it mean for us in the Philippines? Should we be preparing for a surge?

In this week’s episode of Stop C.O.V.I.D. Deaths, please join us in a discussion on the surge in Europe to be provided by Dr. Martin Hibberd, Professor in Emerging Infectious Diseases from the Department of Pathogen Molecular Biology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, who will talk about the magnitude of the problem in Europe and the interventions that are being put in place. Our second speaker is none other than Dr. Regina P. Berba, Chair of the Hospital Infection Unit at UP Philippine General Hospital and who has just arrived from London with updates on her insights on the situation there and the plans for PGH. Serving as our Reactor will be Dr. Teodoro J. Herbosa, Senior Adviser to the National Task Force Against COVID-19 and Chair of the Dept. of Emergency Medicine at UP Philippine General Hospital. To give the Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose, Deputy Director for Health Operations at UP Philippine General Hospital.

See you on our credible on-line community!

Together, we can STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS!
