FriSem: Concentration and Union Activity in Local Labor Markets in the Philippines: Estimates and Implications

October 24 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

๐Ÿ“ฃ HAPPENING THIS FRIDAY, October 24, 2025. 4:00 PM, at the Judith R. Duavit-Vasquez and Class of 1984 Lecture Room (UPSE 105)
๐ŸŽ“ UPSE-PCED Friday Seminar
๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ’กJoin us and find out whether union activity is lower in areas where a few firms dominate employment. Using data from the Philippines, the research finds that in more concentrated labor markets, there are fewer new unions, fewer collective agreements, and lower union membership.

These results challenge the idea that union activity is stronger where large firms generate higher profits. Instead, they highlight how concentrated employment makes it harder for workers to organize.
