“Sustainability of the Tropical Eucheumatoid Seaweed Industry”

February 9 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

The UP Marine Science Institute invites everyone to a hybrid seminar on the Philippine seaweed industry. With NAST Academician Dr. Gisela Concepcion as the Master of Ceremonies, join us as Dr. Michael Roleda of UP MSI and Co-Founder and Vice Chairperson Rosalind Wee of W. Group Inc. discuss the current state of the country’s eucheumatoid seaweed industry.

Eucheumatoid seaweeds such as Kappaphycus alvarezii, Kappaphycus striatus, and Eucheuma denticulatum are the center of the Philippine seaweed industry. As major sources of carrageenan, a valuable hydrocolloid that is widely used in food and household products, these seaweeds built a multimillion-peso industry that have supported our seaweed farmers and processors for decades. Analyzing the environmental and socio-economic issues that surround it is critical to securing the industry’s sustainability.

“Sustainability of the Tropical Eucheumatoid Seaweed Industry” will be held on February 9, 2026, 10:00 AM. As a hybrid webinar, guests will allowed to attend at the MSI AVR or through Zoom.
