SUMMARY:Wearable Futures Exhibition Goes to UP Fine Arts Gallery
DESCRIPTION:After its successful exhibition run in March 2023 at the UP Open University 28th Founding Anniversary in Los Baños\, Wearable Futures is slated to re-exhibit from 18 April until 29 April 2023 at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the UP Fine Arts Gallery in Diliman\, Quezon City.\n\nThe Wearable Futures exhibition is organized by the FICS-run BUKAS Lab and has two major components:\n  \n\nUndergraduate student outputs from the Wearable Futures Hackathon\, a 12-week-long hybrid learning experience collaboratively created with and for undergraduate students at UPOU. During the course\, students explored wearable technology\, e-textiles\, speculative design\, and futures thinking. The exhibit features five wearable prototypes exploring information security\, physical safety\, human movement\, farming\, and climate change\, by sixteen students of the Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia Studies program: Hannah Beraquit\, Arvic Angelo B. Cruz\, Joshua Albert C. Dema-ala\, Airiel Licca Depante\, Sapphire Marilag M. Dulorzo\, Vernice Bethel C. Gica\, Michelle Lado. Faye Anjeli S. Lopez. Laryze Lozano\, Patricia Martillano\, Pauliana Jamie R. Nicolas\, Wrynz Dale Sumande\, Rajmyrr S. Suva\, Myles Lorraine Tuason\, Rel Daryle Dane R. Valle\, and Marciano C. Virola III.\n\n  \n\nWorks-in-progress by the 2022 Fellows of the Emerging Futurist Residency\, a research and creative program focused on supporting and nurturing exploration of the future by multidisciplinary teams. The residency program aims to deconstruct dominant paradigms about the future and develops alternative models through a combination of critical inquiry and hands-on experimentation. The 2022 Fellows––fashion designer-architect JJ Aquino\, researcher-creative producer Franchesca Casauay\, and fashion designer-illustrator Renz Reyes–explored various aspects of the Terno\, arguably the Philippines’ most iconic national dress. With Casauay guiding the overall creative production\, Aquino and Reyes reimagine and reshape the Terno’s materiality\, construction\, and sociocultural function\, experimenting on how a Terno might look\, move\, and come to be in the near future.\n\nThe initiative is led by FICS Dean Dr. Diego Maranan\, with support from research assistants Jerome Suplemento and Lucky Vengua\, in partnership with Space Ecologies Art and Design (SEADS) and the MetaFuturism Lab.\n\nFor inquiries\, kindly contact jerome.suplemento@upou.edu.ph.\n—\nExhibition opening:\n18 Apr 2023 // 2:00PM–5:00PM\n\nRegular exhibition run:\n19 Apr–29 Apr 2023 // 10:00AM-4:00PM\n*Closed on Sun & Mon\n\nVenue:\nMulti-Purpose Hall\, UP Fine Arts Gallery\,\nDiliman\, Quezon City

SUMMARY:Sutopian Projects in Mauritius: Shades of Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Image from DGeog Facebook page\nIn response to the current multiple moments of crisis\, many countries are implementing large projects that promise sustainable\, cohesive\, inclusive\, and viable lifestyles. Well-connected elites engaged in these projects imagine\, plan\, and realise visions of sustainable and vibrant living together\, shaped by the belief in technologies and enabled by enormous amounts of capital.\n\nFor the fifth Heo/Geo Lecture Series\, sponsored jointly by the UP Department of Geography and the Philippine Geographical Society\, two scholars look at projects in Mauritius that can be interpreted as sustainable utopias (“sutopias”). These projects are already realized or in the process of being implemented. They are analyzed by applying a ‘critical sustainabilities’ approach (cf. Sze et al. 2018\, Greenberg 2018\, 2022) – a concept that integrates multi-layered extended dimensions of sustainability (“multiple sustainabilities”).\n\nDr. Marie Karner (Johannes Guttenberg University Mainz) and Dr. Elisabeth Sommerlad (University of Trier) will co-present “Sutopian Projects in Mauritius between Cohesive Communities and Fragmenting Sustainability” on Tuesday\, 25 April 2023 at 5:00 PM PHT GMT +8:00 (11:00 AM CET GMT+2:00).\n\nThe empirically based analysis from the presentation shows that the negotiated\, presented and staged sustainability dimensions have varying meanings. The projects address and fulfill the needs of most financially strong target groups in delimited spaces and thereby have an uneven fragmenting effect on society as a whole. Building on the scholars’ observations\, fragmenting sustainability as a further\, impact-related dimension of the critical sustainability debate is proposed.\n\nDr. Marie Karner studied geography\, economics\, and media science before joining the Institute of Geography at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in 2013. Her research interests include urban transformations and processes of touristification with a regional focus on the Gulf states\, Australia\, Brazil\, the Caribbean\, and Lebanon.\n\nDr. Elisabeth Sommerlad studied geography\, media\, and sociology before joining the Institute of Geography at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in 2013. Alongside research on media and film geography\, she is concerned with urban transformations\, geographies of encounter\, touristification\, and matters of critical cartography with a regional focus on the island state of Mauritius. Dr. Sommerlad currently acts as a substitute professor for Tourism Geography at the University of Trier.\n\nTo participate in the lecture\, click the Zoom link to register: https://tinyurl.com/44ubb3yu\n\nThis lecture is part of the 40th anniversary celebration of the UP Department of Geography.\n\nSource: UP Department of Geography Facebook
