SUMMARY:IMPRINTED IN THE WATER: A Solo Exhibit of NICOLEI BUENDIA GUPIT
DESCRIPTION:IMPRINTED IN THE WATER\n\nA Solo Exhibit of\nNICOLEI BUENDIA GUPIT\n\nSINING MAKILING GALLERY\nD.L. Umali Hall\, UPLB\n\nOpening on 9 May 2023\nExhibit runs until 30 June 2023\n\n————————-\n\nInspired by her surroundings in Los Baños\, Laguna\, Nicolei Buendia Gupit presents to us in her third solo show\, Imprinted in the Water\, a range of mediums and processes that highlight the impact of human activities on water resources.\n\nBy using prints of man-made objects\, Gupit highlights the ways in which we have come to rely on water resources for our own needs\, often at the expense of the environment and other human and non-human life. The wet pigment that she uses to dye her surfaces suggests the fluidity and mutability of water\, and the need for us to consider our effect on this vital resource. Its subdued palette emanates an ominous atmosphere that conveys the gloomy reality we face. Connecting this with images of marine life skeletons\, she concocts impressions of the devastating ramifications of pollution and overfishing on aquatic ecosystems. Uprooted trees hint at the destruction of natural habitats\, while flaky tin roofs allude to the consequences of climate change and natural disasters in the lives of marginalized Filipinos yearly. She also incorporates bottle-shaped resin works that carry paper money inside them—probing pieces that challenge viewers to consider the value we place on water and the attendant effects of its privatization.\n\nThrough her artworks\, Gupit challenges viewers to consider their own relationship with water and the ways in which our actions can have far-reaching consequences. She invites us to think about the imprint that we are leaving on the natural world\, and to consider how we might work to create a more sustainable and equitable future for all. STELLA MARIE L. As the Philippines continues to embrace technological advancements in medicine\, this webinar aims to shed light on the applications\, benefits\, and future prospects of robotic surgery in the country.\n\nThe Philippine General Hospital is one of the hospitals in the country that uses “robotic surgery”\, also called robot-assisted surgery. It is a type of surgery that allows many types of complex procedures with more precision\, flexibility and control than is possible with conventional techniques. Robotic surgery is often associated with minimally invasive surgery — procedures performed through tiny incisions for faster healing.\n\nIn robotic surgery\, the robot does not “think” on its own. The surgeon controls the arms while seated at a computer console near the operating table. The console gives the surgeon a high-definition\, magnified\, 3-D view of the surgical site. The surgeon leads other team members who assist during the operation. To operate using the Robotic system\, the surgeon makes tiny incisions in your body and inserts miniaturized instruments and a high-definition three-dimensional camera\, and sometimes\, skin incisions are not required at all.\n\nIn this webinar\, renowned experts in robotic surgery will share their valuable insights\, experiences\, and clinical outcomes achieved through robotic-assisted procedures. The speakers will discuss the various subspecialties where robotic surgery has made significant strides\, including urology\, general surgery\, etc. In addition\, the webinar will delve into the advantages of robotic surgery\, focusing on the benefits for patients\, surgeons\, and healthcare institutions. The speakers will highlight the improved precision\, reduced blood loss\, shorter hospital stays\, and faster recovery times associated with robotic-assisted procedures. They will also address the economic implications of adopting robotic surgery\, including cost-effectiveness analyses and potential long-term savings.\n\nTo learn more about robotic surgery\, along with its many uses\, benefits and risks\, join us and the PGH Department of Surgery in this STOP COVID DEATHS webinar with Dr. Nikko J. Magsanoc\, who is the Chair of Robotic Surgery; Dr. Sylvia Karina L. Alip\, who is the Robotic Surgery Coordinator; Dr. Dennis P. Serrano\, who previously served as Chief of two divisions (Division of Urology and Division of Transplant Surgery); and Dr. Hermogenes J. Monroy III\, who is the former chief of the Division of Colorectal Surgery. The Opening Remarks will be given by PGH Director Gap Legaspi while the Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by the Head of the PGH Office of Expanded Education and Training\, Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose.\n\nUltimately\, this webinar aims to ignite a stimulating discussion\, foster collaboration\, and inspire healthcare professionals in the Philippines to embrace the transformative power of robotic surgery. Together\, we can forge a path towards enhanced patient outcomes\, improved surgical techniques\, and a brighter future for surgical care in the Philippines.\n\nTogether\, we can STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS!

Aside from having to familiarize oneself with a new set of words\, one would have to adjust to such things as understanding and knowing the parts of a document during a certain period\, old handwriting\, unfamiliar abbreviations\, misspelled words\, ink blotches\, and torn pages.\n\nUsing tools such as paleography to identify terminologies\, abbreviations\, and writing styles that will be used throughout the Hispanic world from the 16th until the 19th century\, researchers are faced with the primary problem of knowing to read\, write\, and understand Spanish especially as there is no specific and unified form of writing. The objective of this presentation is to explain the background of old Spanish records and to aid potential researchers interested in this particular period of the country’s history with an opportunity to extract vital information from these records.\n\nThis lecture will be held online on 09 June 2023 at 14.00 UTC+8. The event is free and open to all\, however pre-registration is required to manage the capacity of the Zoom meeting. The ICA was created under the auspices of UNESCO on the 9th of June 1948 to “to promote the management and use of records and archives\, and the preservation of the archival heritage of humanity around the world\, through the sharing of experiences\, research and ideas on professional archival and records management matters\, and on the management and organisation of archival institutions.” (International Council on Archives)\n\nUPSLIS is an institutional member of the ICA and proudly offers the first Master in Archives and Records Management in the SEA region.
