SUMMARY:IMPRINTED IN THE WATER: A Solo Exhibit of NICOLEI BUENDIA GUPIT
DESCRIPTION:IMPRINTED IN THE WATER\n\nA Solo Exhibit of\nNICOLEI BUENDIA GUPIT\n\nSINING MAKILING GALLERY\nD.L. Umali Hall\, UPLB\n\nOpening on 9 May 2023\nExhibit runs until 30 June 2023\n\n————————-\n\nInspired by her surroundings in Los Baños\, Laguna\, Nicolei Buendia Gupit presents to us in her third solo show\, Imprinted in the Water\, a range of mediums and processes that highlight the impact of human activities on water resources.\n\nBy using prints of man-made objects\, Gupit highlights the ways in which we have come to rely on water resources for our own needs\, often at the expense of the environment and other human and non-human life. The wet pigment that she uses to dye her surfaces suggests the fluidity and mutability of water\, and the need for us to consider our effect on this vital resource. Its subdued palette emanates an ominous atmosphere that conveys the gloomy reality we face. Connecting this with images of marine life skeletons\, she concocts impressions of the devastating ramifications of pollution and overfishing on aquatic ecosystems. Uprooted trees hint at the destruction of natural habitats\, while flaky tin roofs allude to the consequences of climate change and natural disasters in the lives of marginalized Filipinos yearly. She also incorporates bottle-shaped resin works that carry paper money inside them—probing pieces that challenge viewers to consider the value we place on water and the attendant effects of its privatization.\n\nThrough her artworks\, Gupit challenges viewers to consider their own relationship with water and the ways in which our actions can have far-reaching consequences. She invites us to think about the imprint that we are leaving on the natural world\, and to consider how we might work to create a more sustainable and equitable future for all. SUMMARY:UPV MACH: GINHUPTAN Collectors Series
DESCRIPTION:UPV MACH launches GINHUPTAN Collectors Series\nFeaturing the art gifts of Chancellor Dionisia Rola to UP Visayas Hanas Changing Exhibition Gallery 2.\n\nIn celebration of the UP’s 115th Anniversary\n\n———\n\nDionisia A. Rola – The Woman and Her Art Legacy\n\nDr. Dionisia A. Rola\, PhD (b. 1 November 1920) is a trailblazer in more ways than one.\n\nShe was part of the initial faculty members deployed to the newly opened UP Iloilo in 1947. Led by Dean Tomas Fonacier\, the pioneers called themselves T(h)omasites\, referencing the group of 600 American teachers who came to the Philippines aboard USS Thomas in 1901.\n\nAs Dean of UP Baguio (1967-1970)\, Rola enlarged the arts festival started by her predecessor to the National Arts Festival\, which became the hallmark of her administration. The festival drew musicians and visual artists who later became big names in Philippine art.\n\nWhen she became the Dean of UP College Iloilo in 1975\, she established the Visayan Studies Program\, (now the Center for West Visayan Studies\, which is the first local studies center in the region). Chancellor Rola was also instrumental in the establishment of UP Visayas and became its first Chancellor.\n\nThe UPV Art Gallery\, which opened in 1985 at the back of the old Little Theater\, was her brainchild. Converting the Main Building into a cultural center was also her dream.\n\nShe likewise brought excitement to the cultural life of Iloilo by supporting the summer art workshops starting in 1975\, and conducted by then UP Fine Arts Dean Jose Joya. Additionally\, she facilitated the holding of art exhibitions of artists in the roster of the now defunct Galerie Dominique owned by Ilongga Nikki Coseteng.\n\nDr. Rola encouraged the local artists by buying their works that were shown in makeshift exhibition spaces in UP and elsewhere in the city. Several of these personal purchases were intended for the university. The artworks in her personal collection are from the 1960s to the early 2000s.\n\nChancellor Rola’s support for the struggling or established artists never waned and continued even long after her retirement from UP Visayas. Likewise\, several artists\, colleagues\, and student groups gifted her with artworks as expressions of their admiration and respect for Chancellor Rola.\n\nIn 1997\, Chancellor Rola bequeathed to UP Visayas over 50 pieces of her personal collection of paintings\, prints\, and drawings.\nIn her speech during the first exhibition of the donation\, she self-effacingly stressed that she never thought of herself as an art collector; instead\, she considered herself as a steward – thus making the donation an act of turning over the stewardship to a new custodian.\n\nIn 2019\, Chancellor Rola\, gifted the University again with some more of her art possessions.\n\nThe artworks that make up Chancellor Rola’s personal collection testify to her visionary passion\, her great heart\, and her noble soul.\n\nSource: UPV OICA Facebook
