SUMMARY:UP Manila National Women's Month 2024
DESCRIPTION:As we officially welcome the 2024 NATIONAL WOMEN’S MONTH\, we would like to inform everyone of the CALENDAR OF ACTIVITIES prepared by the various units and colleges.\n\nThe 2024 National Women’s Month Celebration aims to capitalize on the recurring theme “WE for gender equality and inclusive society\,” introduced in 2023.\n\nWE represents Women and Everyone\, highlighting the collective responsibility for gender equality\, not solely resting on women but involving everyone.\n\nWE also symbolizes Women’s Empowerment\, a goal achievable when various entities\, ranging from agencies and institutions to private partners and duty-bearers at national and local levels\, ensure women equal rights and opportunities.\n\nThrough the collaborative efforts of women and everyone\, achieving gender equality becomes a tangible possibility.\nMake your support visible!\n\nWear ANYTHING PURPLE on all the FRIDAYS (March 1\, 8\, 15\, & 22) of March to signify support for women’s empowerment and gender equality. Participants can also light up or decorate offices or landmarks in purple to spark interest and discourse on the celebration and what it stands for.\n\nWe begin this new era of the National Women’s Month Celebration with the hope and ambition that WE are all for Gender Equality\, WE are all for an inclusive society.\n\nSource: University of the Philippines Manila Facebook

SUMMARY:LULAN\, ULILA\, LIHAM\, ALAGA\, NAMAN
DESCRIPTION:THIS MARCH AT PAROLA: LULAN\, ULILA\, LIHAM\, ALAGA\, NAMAN\n\nTwo millennia ago\, the first sator square was discovered in the ruins of Pompeii\, among pumice and volcanic ash. Since then\, many other excavations revealed these same Latin words—SATOR\, AREPO\, TENET\, OPERA\, ROTAS—engraved on doorknobs and wall fragments\, etched on boxes\, and even skulls. From the debates\, we learn that perhaps the cryptogram had magical or incantatory properties\, that it functioned as a mystical lock. \n\nLikewise\, LULAN\, ULILA\, LIHAM\, ALAGA\, NAMAN mark our claims to home. In this collaborative project\, each artist receives a sator-type square based on keywords that they use to personally represent the locale of their birth\, their dwelling\, and their artistic practice (while suppressing specific information). Released\, our creations move porously between text (the grid) and art (the visual forms). We unlock place and memory in this manner: gathering letters to unleash images\, meeting in symbol to step out into the light of day.\n\n______\n\nLULAN\, ULILA\, LIHAM\, ALAGA\, NAMAN opens this March 7\, 2024 at Gallery One of the UP Fine Arts Gallery.\n\nMarch 7 | 2 PM | Artist Talk\nMarch 7 | 4 PM | Exhibit Opening\n\nFREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC\n\nWalk-in guests are warmly welcome from Tuesdays to Saturdays\, 9 AM – 4 PM. For bookings\, visit bit.ly/ParolaVisitorsForm or email us at cfagallery.upd@up.edu.ph\n\nSee you!\n\nSource: UP Fine Arts Gallery Facebook

SUMMARY:Matereality
DESCRIPTION:HAPPENING THIS MARCH AT PAROLA: Matereality 💗\n\nThe exhibition’s title\, Matereality\, comprises three words: mater\, reality\, and materiality. This play on words encapsulates the curator’s intention to shake the frame that defines women’s lives\, particularly that of mothers\, by gathering and presenting diverse visual languages created by women artists. The exhibition was first held at Artinformal in Greenhills in April 2022. This exhibition marks its second iteration\, which brings together some of the artists from the previous edition along with new ones. In the proposal\, the curator Annie Pacaña wrote\, “[the second iteration] tackles themes of work-life-art balance/counterbalance/imbalance that artists who are mothers experience daily.” The theme brings to mind our inclination to control time to improve our quality of life.\n\n______\n\nMatereality opens this March 8\, 2024\, at the Multipurpose Hall of the UP Fine Arts Gallery.\n\nMarch 8 | 5 PM | Opening reception\nMarch 8 | 7 PM | Outdoor projection\n\nFREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC\n\nWalk-in guests are warmly welcome from Tuesdays to Saturdays\, 9 AM – 4 PM. SUMMARY:Writing and Speaking Out of Turn: Where to\, Art Studies?
DESCRIPTION:In the 1990s the faculty of the Department of Art Studies cobbled together a makeshift publication called the Art Studies Journal (ASJ). We wrote and contributed our essays\, not because we have something to say with much certainty but to question those very certainties – to go against the grain\, to write and speak out of turn\, as we considered our positions as educators and scholars amidst the urgencies of the times. With the first volume published in 1992 and the latest issue in 1994\, the journal has had an almost three decade hiatus.\n\nToday\, the ASJ returns with the same reflexive questioning that animated the first volumes\, but this time with a new set of challenges. What does it mean to write and speak out of turn in an increasingly market-driven and ranking obsessed academic environment? What do we do when we do art studies in our everyday lives amidst pressures to conform to the demands of an increasingly corporatized and managerial ecology of higher education?\n\nAs we welcome the revival of the Art Studies Journal with such unsettling thoughts\, we invite you to join us for an intimate and provocative conversation with members of the faculty from the Department of Art Studies\, who will reflect upon the publication’s and the Department’s past\, present\, and future directions.\n\nThe relaunch and public forum titled “Writing and Speaking Out of Turn: Where to\, Art Studies?” will be held on 21 March at 1:00 PM at the 1/F Lobby of the Jorge B. Vargas Museum.\n\nFor more information on the journal\, please visit: artstudiesjournal.upd.edu.ph.\n\nKindly register through: https://forms.gle/d5xipSL8kUMnZxmu5
