SUMMARY:Unfolding (언폴딩) Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Unfolding (언폴딩)\nInhwan Oh and Kyungmook Kim\nPreview on 14 December 2024\, on view until 22 February 2025\n1/F Galleries\nUP Vargas Museum\n\nThe UP Vargas Museum\, together with the Ministry of Culture\, Sports\, and Tourism of the Republic of Korea\, the Korea Arts Management Service\, and the Fund for Korean Art Abroad\, presents the exhibition of works by artists Inhwan Oh and Kyungmook Kim organized by Dominic Mangila. Unfolding (언폴딩) considers the experiences of two artists who embody othered identities in a society largely devoted to masculine ideals. Inhwan Oh and Kyungmook Kim unpack vignettes of life in South Korea as members of the LGBTQIA+ community in film and video works\, and through art that engages labor and marks processes.\n\nThrough them\, they summon the worlds of prisons and places of incarceration juxtaposed with spaces of freedom and gaiety– to discover and mark a social identity that refuses to settle with the laws and sanctions of a patriarchal nation.\n\nUnfolding (언폴딩) will be on view at the 1/F Galleries of the UP Vargas Museum starting 14 December 2024. Write to vargasmuseum@up.edu.ph for details and related information. The museum is located inside the University of the Philippines Diliman Campus and is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays except holidays\, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.\n\nFor updates on events\, exhibitions\, and advisories check our socials on Facebook\, Instagram\, or Twitter @upvargasmuseum.\n\n__________________________\nAbout the artist\n\nInhwan Oh\n\nInhwan Oh (b. 1965) is Associate Professor at the Department of Painting of the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University. His participatory works and site-specific projects contextualize a particular space and time and seek to dismantle the cultural codes formed in the relationship between the identities of individuals and groups within a patriarchal society. Some of his more recent solo exhibitions were held at the Smith Gallery of Davidson College in North Carolina (2019)\, BAIK ART in Los Angeles\, California (2019)\, and Bongsan Cultural Center\, South Korea (2018) He recently participated in group exhibitions at the Arsenale in Venice\, Italy (2019) and at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Gwacheon\, South Korea (2018). He was a recipient of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and SBS Foundation’s Korea Artist Prize in 2015.\nKyungmook Kim\nKyungmook Kim’s (b. 1985) video art\, documentary\, and narrative films expand the form of cinema by exploring the precarity of the marginalized such as homosexuals\, transsexuals\, sex workers\, and North Korean defectors. He made his directorial debut with Me and Doll-playing in 2004. Some of his other notable films include his Things Trilogy (2005-2014)\, A Cheonggyecheon Dog (2008)\, and Grace Period (2015). His films have been selected for and received awards in international film festivals such as the Venice Film Festival the BFI London Film Festival\, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Among his awards include the Idea Generation Grant of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2019)\, The Association of Korean Independent Film & Video’s Indie Filmmaker of the Year Award (2014)\, and Muju International Film Festival’s Best Director Award (2014).\n_________________________\nAbout the museum\n\nThe University of the Philippines Jorge B.
