Corneal opacities\, resulting from trauma\, infection\, or dystrophic processes\, represent a significant cause of visual impairment. The availability of healthy corneal tissue for transplantation is paramount in mitigating this burden.\n\nIn this week’s episode\, we will discuss the intricacies of cornea donation – from the initial stages of donor identification and screening\, encompassing stringent protocols to ensure tissue viability and minimize disease transmission\, to the sophisticated techniques employed in corneal preservation and transplantation. Our expert speakers will discuss the latest advancements in keratoplasty\, offering insights into their indications\, surgical nuances\, and postoperative management.\n\nMore importantly\, we will address the socio-cultural considerations surrounding cornea donation within the Philippine context. We will explore strategies to enhance public awareness and promote a culture of altruism\, emphasizing the profound impact of this life-transforming gift.\n\nIn celebration of National Women’s Month\, we are putting a spotlight on one of the champions of cornea donation in the Philippines: Dr. Beverly D. Rosas\, who is the current Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center. Our reactor is Dr. Noel S. Cariño\, who is a cornea & external eye diseases specialist from the Department of Ophthalmology of the Asian Hospital and Medical Center. He is also a partner at the Asia-Pacific Eye Center.\n\nJoin us in gaining a deeper understanding of the legal and ethical frameworks governing cornea donation\, as well as the practical approaches to initiating conversations with potential donors and their families. Together\, we can contribute to the alleviation of corneal blindness and the restoration of visual function for those in need.
