SUMMARY:"Edible Flora: Botanical Art Exhibition"
DESCRIPTION:A FEAST FOR THE EYES AND APPETITE! 🍽️🌺\n\nFlores de Mayo is still underway\, and the UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas is delighted to invite everyone to visit and view its latest temporary exhibit\, “Edible Flora\,” from May 19 to 30\, 2025.\n\nThe curatorial concept stems from the increasing gastronomic popularity of flowers. Not only do they make beautiful ornaments\, but they also provide health and nutritional benefits. For instance\, the pansit-pansitan or ulasimang bato (Peperomia pellucida) has been developed into a gout medication by UP Manila researchers. Meanwhile\, the katmon fruit (Dillenia philippinensis) can be used as a souring agent for dishes such as sinigang.\n\nCurated by Dr. Honey Libertine Achanzar-Labor\, Special Assistant to the Chancellor\, the exhibit features 32 paintings of edible flora by members of the Philippine Botanical Art Society (PhilBAS). The group was founded by UPM BA Philippine Arts alumna\, Ms. Bing Famoso\, with the mission to revive the botanical art style and to advocate for the conservation of our nation’s endemic plants.\nVisit the UPM-MHI now\, and perhaps you’ll try these flora for your next meal!\n\nOrganized by:\nPhilippine Botanical Art Society\nUP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas\nThe Faura Project\nSpecial thanks to:\nNational Commission for Culture and the Arts\n\nSource: UP Manila – Museum Of A History Of Ideas Facebook

DESCRIPTION:The University of the Philippines\,\nin partnership with the UP Manila – National Institutes of Health\,\nand in cooperation with UP Philippine General Hospital and UP College of Medicine\,\nwould like to invite you to attend this webinar! \n \nRegistration slots are limited to this HEALTH UPDATES webinar\nSo sign up NOW:\nbit.ly/HealthUpdatesWebinar239 \n\nWebinar #239\nMay 23\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nUlyanin Na\, Pandinig Mahina Pa!\nProtect Your Hearing and Mind for Healthy Aging\n\nPresenter:\nDR. JOSE M. ACUIN\nOtorlaryngologist – Head and Neck Surgeon & Chief Medical Officer\, Asian Hospital and Medical Center\n\nReactor:\nDR. ALVIN RAE F. CENINA\nAdult Neurologist and Dementia Specialist\, Section of Neurology\nDepartment of Neurosciences\nUP – Philippine General Hospital\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #239\nMay 23\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nUlyanin Na\, Pandinig Mahina Pa!\nProtect Your Hearing and Mind for Healthy Aging\n\nRecent epidemiological and longitudinal studies have illuminated a robust association between untreated hearing impairment and an increased risk of developing various forms of dementia\, including Alzheimer’s disease. This is not merely a correlational observation. Emerging research points towards plausible pathophysiological mechanisms\, including cognitive load theory\, social isolation\, and shared neuropathological pathways\, all contributing to an accelerated trajectory of cognitive decline in individuals with unmanaged hearing loss. Understanding these mechanisms is paramount for developing effective and comprehensive preventative interventions.\n\nIn this week’s episode\, our esteemed panel of speakers will present the most current scientific literature\, discuss diagnostic paradigms for both hearing loss and dementia\, and critically evaluate the efficacy of various interventions\, from early auditory rehabilitation to cognitive stimulation strategies. We will emphasize the actionable steps that we need to integrate into clinical practice to identify at-risk individuals and implement timely interventions. In addition\, we will discuss proactive measures we can undertake to safeguard auditory and cognitive health.\n\nOur main speaker this week is the Chief Medical Officer of Asian Hospital and Medical Center\, Dr. Jose M. Acuin. Our reactor is a practicing adult neurologist and dementia specialist from the UP-PGH Section of Neurology\, Dr. Alvin Rae F. Cenina.\n\nJoin us as we work towards contributing to a healthier\, more cognitively resilient Filipino society. Together\, we can stop preventable deaths!

SUMMARY:Land\, Livelihood\, and Liminality: Interrogating Informal Settlement on the UP Diliman Campus
DESCRIPTION:DSD Lecture Series Presents:\nLand\, Livelihood\, and Liminality: Interrogating Informal Settlement on the UP Diliman Campus\n\nEveryone is invited to the lecture of Dr. Redento B. Recio on 23 May 2025\, 5:30 PM at the Bulwagang Tandang Sora\, UP CSWCD!\n\nThe event is in partnership with SD 303-304 Class\, 2nd Semester\, AY 24-25.\n\nSee you there!\n\n– – – – – – – –\n\n[Abstract]\nWho belongs in the university? This presentation offers a grounded\, preliminary investigation into the informal settlements within the UP Diliman campus. It unpacks the often-overlooked presence of informal settler communities composed of university staff\, students\, workers\, migrants\, and their families—groups whose everyday labor and lives are deeply entangled in the university’s daily operations and spatial development. These communities provide vital yet undervalued services: low-cost housing\, cheap labor\, affordable transport\, and retail support to the university and its neighboring districts.\n\nThe presentation examines the spatial conditions\, opportunities\, enduring challenges\, and uncertain futures faced by these communities. It also narrates how residents navigate their precarious condition through grassroots organizing\, rights-claiming\, and solidarity-based practices that challenge exclusionary ideas about belonging in a public university. In engaging with multidimensional issues of tenure insecurity\, livelihood precarity\, and housing rights\, the discussion calls for a reimagining of campus governance—one that foregrounds equity\, social inclusion\, and the broader social responsibilities of UP as the country’s national university.\n\nThe presentation ends with a provocation on the wider implications of engaging with informal settlement for grounded theorizing and for advancing emancipatory practices in urban social development.\n\nSource: College of Social Work and Community Development Facebook
