SUMMARY:Notes for Tomorrow Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Notes for Tomorrow\nIn collaboration with Independent Curators International (ICI)\n\n16 December 2025 to 07 March 2026\nUP Vargas Museum 1/F Galleries\nExhibition preview on 16 December 2025\, 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM\nat the UP Vargas Museum\, West Wing Gallery\n\n‘Notes for Tomorrow’ features artworks from around the world brought together in 2020 to reflect on a new global reality ushered in by the COVID-19 pandemic. Coming out of a moment where collective crisis had to be managed through collective care\, Independent Curators International (ICI) turned to 30 curators from 25 countries to consider the issues that have come to the fore in the pandemic’s aftermath\, asking each of them to share one artwork that they believe is vital to be seen today.\n\nThe UP Vargas Museum hosts the exhibition’s first iteration in Southeast Asia\, opening on 16 December 2025\, bringing together works across various geographies\, narratives\, and disciplines that stray from the colonial canon. The selected artists present works that question monumentality and seek the wisdom of localities. In this necessary moment of cultural transition\, each work acts as a source of inspiration from the recent past toward new futures. Rather than proposing a single path forward\, the artworks in Notes for Tomorrow present a network of overlapping solutions.\n\n___\n\nArtists of ‘Notes for Tomorrow’: Madiha Aijaz\, Ernesto Bautista\, Maeve Brennan\, Vajiko Chachkhiani\, Luke Luokun Cheng\, A Liberated Library for Education\, Inspiration\, and Action\, Nothando Chiwanga\, Shezad Dawood\, Demian DinéYazhi’\, Cao Guimarães\, Ilana Harris-Babou\, Rei Hayama\, Amrita Hepi\, INVASORIX\, Tamás Kaszás\, Ali Kazma\, David Lozano\, Mona Marzouk\, Joiri Minaya\, Peter Morin\, Omehen\, Daniela Ortiz\, Kristina Kay Robinson\, Luiz Roque\, Mark Salvatus\, Ibrahima Thiam\, u/n multitude\, Wayne Kaumualii Westlake\, and Yan Shi\n\nSource: UP Vargas Museum Facebook

SUMMARY:THEORIZING THE GENDERING OF TRANSCULTURAL CONSUMER DISTRICTS IN JAPAN: A CASE STUDY OF THE LINGUISTIC LANDSCAPE OF SHIN-OKUBO "KOREATOWN"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special lecture on gendering\, consumerism\, and linguistic landscapes by Thomas Baudinette\, PhD\, Senior Lecturer in Global Studies at Macquarie University\, New Zealand. This lecture\, organized with the UP Korea Research Center\, will be held at 2 PM – 4 PM on 26 January 2026 at the CSSP Health & Wellness Center.\n\n— Abstract —\n\nThis presentation draws upon longitudinal ethnographic fieldwork of Japanese women’s fandom for K-pop idol groups between 2015 to 2025 to develop a theory of the gendered nature of consumer space in Japan. Through careful attention to the Linguistic Landscape (LL) of Tokyo’s so-called Koreatown of Shin-Ōkubo\, I explore how this district has conspicuously transformed from an ethnic enclave into a “K-pop space” due to the heavy penetration of K-pop related linguistic and other semiotic resources across the neighbourhood over the past decade.\n\nIn particular\, I argue that the materiality of K-pop merchandising in Shin-Ōkubo and its ties to other markers of “Koreanness” transform the district itself into K-pop content to be consumed by fans who are presumed to be heterosexual women. In so doing\, I unpack how the LL of Shin-Ōkubo is specifically coded as feminine\, considering how the study of LL can expand and nuance our understanding of the gendered nature of consumer culture in contemporary Japan. Through my attention to the role of Shin-Ōkubo’s LL in naturalizing specific fantasies of Korea and related (heterosexual) desires central to the broader Korean Wave in Japan\, I consider how the neighbourhood thus represents a space where one’s gendered identity as a K-pop fan is negotiated through the very act of visiting and experiencing the district. I conclude the presentation by reflecting on the potentials of K-pop spaces in Japan to function as sites where female fans can exercise their agency and produce feminist solidarities designed to combat heteropatriarchy.\n\n— Bionote —\n\nDr. Thomas Baudinette is Senior Lecturer in Global Cultures\, School of International Studies\, Macquarie University. A cultural anthropologist\, his research explores the role popular culture plays in shaping knowledge about gender and sexuality across East and Southeast Asia. His first book is Regimes of Desire: Young Gay Men\, Media\, and Masculinity in Tokyo (University of Michigan Press\, 2021).\n\nHis second book is Boys Love Media in Thailand: Celebrity\, Fans\, and Transnational Asian Queer Popular Culture (Bloomsbury\, 2023). Thomas is currently working on three book projects: an edited collection titled Riding the Thai Wind: Globalising Thai Media\, Transnational Fandom\, and Soft Power Potentials\, the updated English-language edition of Akiko Hori and Mori Naoko’s seminal text BL no Kyōkasho (A BL Textbook)\, and a monograph tentatively titled Queer Fantasies of Asia: Japanese and Korean Media Fandom in the Philippines.\nThis event is free and open to the public.\n\nSource: UP Department of Linguistics Facebook
