SUMMARY:UP Center for Education and Development (CEDEV) Panel Discussion on General Education in Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:The UP Center for Education and Development (CEDEV) invites you to a Panel Discussion on General Education in Higher Education.\n\nThe panel discussion brings together local and international experts across different fields\, including science\, the social sciences\, and education\, to provide a broad and comparative discussion of how General Education (GE) is understood\, designed\, and contested in higher education. GE has long served as the common intellectual foundation of university education\, complementing specialization with broader capacities for critical thinking\, civic awareness\, and societal engagement. Yet the place and purpose of GE continue to be debated across higher education systems. At the center of these conversations is a fundamental question: what kind of graduates should universities develop in a rapidly changing world? The discussion will investigate how GE reform affects different disciplines and professional pathways\, while also situating the Philippine context within wider international and comparative perspectives.\n\nThis event is free and open to all. SUMMARY:Health Updates Webinar #285 (Rats\, Dust\, and Danger: Ano ang dapat alamin tungkol sa Hantavirus?)
DESCRIPTION:The University of the Philippines\,\nin partnership with the UP Manila – National Institutes of Health\,\nand in cooperation with UP Philippine General Hospital and UP College of Medicine\,\nwould like to invite you to attend this webinar! \n  \nRegistration slots are limited to this HEALTH UPDATES webinar\nSo sign up NOW:\nbit.ly/HealthUpdatesWebinar285 \n  \nWebinar #285\nMay 22\, 2026 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nRats\, Dust\, and Danger\nAno Ang Dapat Alamin Tungkol sa Hantavirus?\n\nPresenter:\nDr. Arthur Dessi E. Roman\nPresident\nPhilippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #285\nMay 22\, 2026 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nRats\, Dust\, and Danger\nAno Ang Dapat Alamin Tungkol sa Hantavirus?\n\nThe recent\, highly publicized multi-country outbreak of severe acute respiratory illness linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship in the South Atlantic has once again underscored the volatile nature of emerging and re-emerging zoonotic pathogens. Molecular diagnostics and genomic sequencing have confirmed the causative agent of this deadly cluster as the Andes virus\, a distinctly virulent hantavirus strain indigenous to South America. As public health agencies orchestrate complex international contact tracing and stringently monitor repatriated passengers across multiple continents\, frontline healthcare workers must remain exceptionally vigilant. While the absolute risk to the general global population resides at a low threshold\, the unique epidemiological characteristics of the Andes virus demand an immediate\, rigorous baseline of clinical awareness.\n\nIn this week’s episode\, we will meticulously deconstruct the clinical complexities\, transmission mechanics\, and diagnostic markers of hantavirus infections. Unlike standard hantaviruses\, which are exclusively contracted via the inhalation of aerosolized excreta from infected rodent vectors\, the Andes virus variant poses an elevated risk due to its documented capacity for limited\, close-contact interhuman transmission. We will review the pathophysiology of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome\, which is a devastating manifestation characterized by a prodromal phase of fever\, severe myalgia\, and gastrointestinal distress that rapidly escalates into bilateral pulmonary edema\, acute respiratory distress syndrome\, and refractory cardiogenic shock.\n\nOur speaker is Dr. Arthur Dessi E. Roman\, who is the current President of the Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Join us and be part of the medical workforce that stands prepared to identify\, isolate\, and safely manage potential cases.

SUMMARY:Songs from the Ruins: Music\, Memory\, and the Reconstruction of a Nation in the Philippines' Historical Data Papers\, 1951-9153
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 20\, 2026 (Wed) at 10 AM with Dr. LaVerne David C. de la Peña for an online lecture titled Songs from the Ruins: Music\, Memory\, and the Reconstruction of a Nation in the Philippines’ Historical Data Papers\, 1951-9153.\n\nThis public lecture explores a remarkable archive of folksongs preserved in the National Archives of the Philippines in the Historical Data Papers. Dr. de la Peña draws on this collection of community-gathered songs\, lyrics\, and melodies and investigates what makes these songs distinctively Filipino. These manuscripts compiled by public school teachers across the archipelago in the early 1950s under President Elpidio Quirino’s Executive Order 486 is itself a response to the devastating loss of the National library during the Battle of Manila in 1945. Gestural analysis uncover the recurring musical mannerisms – such as descending scalar contractions\, neighbor-tone oscillations\, and the combination of small melodic cells – that appear across regional traditions from Luzon to Mindanao. The presenter also reflects on the methodological challenges of working with such a large and heterogenous corpus\, discussing the experimental use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and large language models as analytical aids for identifying patterns in both the lyrical and musical data\, while situating the research within the broader history of the Philippines; postwar cultural reconstruction and the underappreciated role of teachers as grassroots ethnomusicologists.\n\nDr. de la Peña is the former Director of the UPCE and former Dean of the UP Kolehiyo ng Musika (UP College of Music). He also serves as Vice Chairperson of the UNESCO-Philippine National Commission\, contributing to the preservation of cultural heritage through archival and documentation initiatives. Following his retirement\, Dr. de la Peña continues to serve as professorial lecturer at the University of the Philippines where he teaches courses in ethnomusicology and musicology. He is the first recipient of the Trimillos Visiting Distinguished Professorship in Ethnomusicology for the Spring 2026 semester at the University of Hawaii at Manoa\, a post honoring the legacy of Dr. Ricardo Trimillos. Dr. de la Peña holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from UH at Manoa and both bacherlor and master degrees from the University of the Philippines.\n\nTo join\, register through https://bit.ly/SongsFromTheRuins or scan the QR code below!\n\nAdmission to the lecture is free!\n\nSource: UP Center for Ethnomusicology Facebook

SUMMARY:UPD-Cambridge Lecture Series Year 3
DESCRIPTION:[UPD-Cambridge Philosophy Lecture Series 2026: Session 3]\n\nMEET THE SPEAKERS!\n\nYou’ve heard of the Early Wittgenstein and the Later Wittgenstein\, but have you heard of the “Middle” Wittgenstein? Have you ever wondered what could have caused Wittgenstein to radically change his views? Could the Later Wittgenstein–generally considered to be the “better” of the two–have mistakenly abandoned some his earlier views which he shouldn’t have? What happened during those crucial years of his transition?\n\nOn Monday\, 18 May 2026\, from 5-7 PM on Zoom\, Professor Michael Potter\, one of the world’s leading experts on the History of Analytic Philosophy\, Philosophy of Mathematics\, Set Theory\, and Logic\, will be delivering a lecture entitled “Wittgenstein’s Blue Book”.\n\nABSTRACT:\nLudwig Wittgenstein is famous for two books\, the Tractatus (published in 1922) and the Philosophical Investigations (published in 1953\, after his death). His so-called “middle period” in the 1930s has been rather less studied. One work from this period\, the Blue Book\, stands out both for the way that he wrote it (in English rather than his usual German) and for the extent to which its subject matter differs from that of the later Investigations. I shall focus in this lecture on his discussion of what is involved in naming an object\, a discussion which\, I shall suggest\, contains an interesting idea that he later lost sight of.\n\nABOUT THE LECTURER:\nMichael Potter is Professor of Logic in the Philosophy Faculty at Cambridge University and a Life Fellow of Fitzwilliam College. He was previously at Oxford\, where he took a D.Phil. in pure mathematics and was a Fellow of Balliol College. He spent periods of research leave in the Department of Logic and Metaphysics at St Andrews and the Department of Philosophy at Harvard. In 2004 and 2005 he was on research leave from Cambridge as a Senior Research Fellow at Stirling University funded by the AHRC.\n\nHis research interests lie mainly in the history of analytic philosophy (in particular Frege\, Russell\, Wittgenstein and Ramsey)\, the philosophy of mathematics\, philosophical logic\, the philosophy of language\, and the philosophy of religion.\n\nHis books include Reason’s Nearest Kin (2000)\, Set Theory and its Philosophy (2004)\, Wittgenstein’s Notes on Logic (2010) and The Rise of Analytic Philosophy 1879-1930 (2020).\n\nABOUT THE REACTOR:\nLumberto (often called Sir Totoy by his students) is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Philosophy in the University of the Philippines Diliman. He took his PhD in Philosophy in University of Bergen and his MA Philosophy degree at UP Diliman. In both degrees\, he worked on the philosopher\, Ludwig Wittgenstein.\n\nHis MA thesis entitled\, “Wittgenstein and Moral Universality”\, was initially a conference paper that was presented at the Wittgenstein conference in Austria (in 2009). Arguing against Onora O’Neill’s portrayal of the later Wittgenstein as moral particularist\, the thesis argued that Wittgenstein’s rule following considerations involved a reductio ad absurdo on forms of reasoning confined only to specific practices and that it is within that reductio that Wittgenstein’s appeal to the common behavior behavior of mankind (PI 206) emerges as a transcendental condition that allows for inclusive moral reasoning.\n\nFor his PhD\, Lumberto worked with advisers Kevin Cahill and Richard Sorli to come up with a monograph entitled “Resolute Transcendentalism in the Later Wittgenstein”. Between those who say that Wittgenstein’s use of nonsense is empty (e.g. resolute readers like Stephen Mulhall) and those who say that those nonsense expresses metaphysical insights (e.g. transcendental readers like Jonathan Lear)\, Lumberto attempted to show a middle ground; i.e. a reading of the later Wittgenstein where the results of philosophical elucidation can lead to non-metaphysical philosophical insights.\n\nDespite eventually being preoccupied with applied philosophy\, like philosophy of science and bioethics\, Lumberto continues to teach graduate courses on Wittgenstein and looks forward to being able to return to Wittgenstein research.\n\nRegister in the link below if you haven’t already: https://forms.gle/fMTPrF5oFqBcH4t38\n\nRegistration is free and open to the public!\n\nFor questions or clarifications\, e-mail project head Mika Gana at msgana2@up.edu.ph or Henry Fernando at erfernando1@up.edu.ph.\nPoster by Tati Inumerables\n\nSee you on Monday!\n\nSource: UP Department of Philosophy Facebook

SUMMARY:"Market Design with Distributional Policies: Lessons for the Philippines?"
DESCRIPTION:HAPPENING ON FRIDAY\, May 15\, 2026. 4:00 PM\, at the Judith R. Duavit-Vazquez and Class of 1984 Lecture Room (UPSE 105)\n\n🎓 UPSE-PCED Friday Seminar\, featuring M. Bumin Yenmez\, Ph.D.\, a Professor of Economics at Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL). Before joining WUSTL\, he worked at Boston College\, Carnegie Mellon University\, and Microsoft Research. He holds a PhD from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree from Caltech\, and serves as an associate editor of the Journal of Economic Theory.\n\n🧠📚💡Abstract: Market design started with the famous work of Gale and Shapley (1962) and has reshaped various markets such as school choice\, kidney exchange\, and college admissions. More recently\, distributional policies such as affirmative action have become a central focus of the literature. In this lecture\, I give an overview of this literature starting with policies based on reserving seats for protected groups (Hafalir\, Yenmez\, and Yildirim\, 2013). Such reservation systems have been implemented at the national level in Brazil\, Chile\, and India\, and were used to allocate vaccines during the Covid-19 pandemic in the United States.\n\nThe Philippines has its own tradition of affirmative action policies — including reservations for indigenous peoples\, persons with disabilities\, and other marginalized groups — and market design offers principled tools for evaluating\, refining\, and implementing such policies. I will conclude with recent advances that formalize distributional objectives through diversity functions and distributional preferences\, and discuss their potential application to Philippine allocation problems.\n\n📝 Please register using the links below or by scanning the QR codes in the poster:\n 📍 Onsite: https://tinyurl.com/4m5fs4vr\n Zoom: https://tinyurl.com/bddsmr3r \n\n👀 We’d love to see you there!\n\nSource: UP School of Economics Facebook
