SUMMARY:An Institutional History of the UP School of Fine Arts\, 1909-1952 with Asst. Prof. Poeleen Alvarez
DESCRIPTION:HAPPENING NEXT WEEK AT PAROLA 🌟\n\nBrown Bag Series 07\nAn Institutional History of the UP School of Fine Arts\, 1909-1952\nwith Asst. Prof. Poeleen Alvarez\n\nThe UP CFA Department of Theory presents the Brown Bag Series. For its 7th installment\, we are joined by Asst. Prof. Poeleen Alvarez who will share the results of her research\, experiences\, and reflections on the beginnings of the UP School of Fine Arts.\n\nThe University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts (now College) is one of the oldest institutions of art in the Philippines and is home to the country’s most prestigious and pioneering artists\, art historians\, designers\, and cultural workers. Established in 1909 under the auspices of the American colonial government\, it has since produced 10 National Artists for Visual Arts who have bequeathed to the nation some of its most valuable cultural treasures such as Fernando Amorsolo’s Palay Maiden (1920)\, Guillermo Tolentino’s Bonifacio Monument (1931) and Oblation (1935)\, Jose Joya’s Granadean Arabesque (1958) and Napoleon Abueva’s Allegorical Harpoon (1964). Despite its tenure\, there exists no formal study on the institution save for some essays published in monographs and exhibition catalogues\, which are more or less silent about the colonial underpinnings that molded the school’s program and policies.\n\nThis thesis traces the institution’s development as it undergoes the process of Filipinization; from its establishment in 1909 under American colonial rule\, to the post-war nationalist milieu of the 1950s. Conversely\, this thesis also brings to light how the SFA contributed to the nation-building efforts typical of the century under the sanction of American colonialism. The study will focus on the tenures of Directors Rafael Enriquez (1909-1926)\, Fabian de la Rosa (1927-1937)\, and Fernando Amorsolo (1938-1952). To create the narrative\, it consults the University’s general catalogues\, reports of UP Presidents\, yearbooks\, and some of the directors’ writings and speeches about art.\n\nFREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC\n\n🗓️ April 29\, 2026 (Wednesday)\n🕦 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM\n📍 Conference Room\, Arts and Design West Hall\, UP College of Fine Arts\n\nThe UP Fine Arts Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday\, 9 AM to 4 PM\, at the Arts and Design West Hall\, College of Fine Arts\, Diliman\, Quezon City. SUMMARY:Kevin Fox on geographic inquiries initiated by the Geographical Imaginations Expedition & Institute
DESCRIPTION:🌏 HEO/GEO LECTURE SERIES (APRIL 2026) 🌏\n\nKevin Fox on geographic inquiries initiated by the Geographical Imaginations Expedition & Institute\n\nWhen Derek Gregory published Geographical Imaginations in 1994\, the book puts emphasis on relational understanding of individual worlds as intertwined with global-universalisms. Gregory was not the first one to discuss permutations of imagination in relation to geography. Hugh Prince\, David Harvey\, Yi-Fu Tuan\, Katherine McKittrick and Jen Jack Gieseking added different interpretations\, case studies\, and situated ecologies to expand the scope and reach of geographical imaginations.\n\nIt is perhaps in this spiritual vein that Kevin Fox’s version of geographical imagination as formalized by founding The Geographical Imaginations Expedition & Institute (The GIEI)\, stems from pluralizing the concept (like Gregory) and providing multi-scalar and multi-cultural examples of meaning-making that situate individuals and collectives in space and place.\nFor the fifth Heo/Geo Lecture Series for 2026\, the UP Department of Geography of the University of the Philippines-Diliman (UP Diliman) together with the Philippine Geographical Society (PGS) proudly present a talk: Inner Geographies: Imagination\, Experience\, and Global Citizenship by Kevin Fox on Friday\, 24 April 2026. To be delivered via Zoom\, the talk starts at 5:30 PM-Philippine Standard Time (11:30AM CET).\n\nThe talk introduces the work of The Geographical Imaginations Expedition & Institute (The GIEI)\, a non-profit initiative working across three interconnected geographical dimensions: the global\, the local\, and the inner. The GIEI translates key ideas from human geography into accessible and participatory forms\, expanding popular understandings of geography to include the internal dimensions of perception\, imagination\, and meaning-making that shape how individuals locate themselves within an interconnected planet.\n\nThe name draws inspiration from the Detroit Geographical Expedition & Institute (1968–1971)\, an experiment in local\, community-based geography that sought to democratize knowledge production and center marginalized perspectives. Building on this legacy\, The GIEI extends geographic inquiry inward\, treating the inner world as a legitimate site of exploration. From this foundation\, it develops participatory approaches to global citizenship education through interconnected practices including research\, storytelling\, simulation\, advocacy\, and lexicon-building.\n\nCentral to this work is The World as a Village of 100 People\, a civic-assembly simulation that translates global inequalities into lived\, dialogic experience. The process unfolds across three phases—orientation\, imagination\, and transformation—guiding participants from understanding global systems\, to inhabiting diverse perspectives\, to collectively envisioning alternative futures.\n\nMoving from The GIEI’s earlier work in visual and audio storytelling toward a broader institutional vision (The GIEI 2.0)\, the talk reflects on the shift from project-based initiatives to the design of scalable frameworks for global citizenship learning.\n\nKEVIN S. FOX is a human geographer and the founder and director of The Geographical Imaginations Expedition & Institute. With over 20 years of experience in global citizenship education\, his work explores how individuals and communities understand their place within an interconnected world. He has developed programs that integrate storytelling\, simulation\, and field-based learning to make global systems more accessible and participatory. A National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellow and Inner Development Goals Ambassador\, he works at the intersection of human geography\, critical pedagogy\, and imagination to advance new models of global learning. Originally from Connecticut (USA)\, he currently lives on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees.\n\nThe Heo/Geo Lecture Series is a monthly resource talk / lecture given by academic geographers\, geography-adjacent scholars\, practitioners working in geospatial industries\, and partners that engaged in multiple publics\, and based locally and abroad. The talk ranges from the sharing of research findings to pedagogical practices and field-based experiences. This month’s Heo/Geo Lecture Series is facilitated by two research clusters at the UP Department of Geography: Human Geography (HUG) and Media\, Literary Geographies\, and Geohumanities (MELANGE) and is in line with the SDG #4 (Quality Education) of the United Nations.\n\nTo participate in the event\, click this link to register: https://tinyurl.com/4bmbjrz2\n\n—\n\nWorks cited:\nFox\, Kevin S. SUMMARY:UPSE-PCED Seminar "Do Persistent Gender Differences Begin at Entry?"
DESCRIPTION:HAPPENING ON FRIDAY\, April 24\, 2026. 4:00 PM\, at the Judith R. Duavit-Vazquez and Class of 1984 Lecture Room (UPSE 105)\n\n🎓 UPSE-PCED Friday Seminar\, featuring Joseph Ernest Zveglich\, Ph.D.\, Deputy Director General of the Economic Research and Development Impact Department (ERDI) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB)\, Visiting Senior Fellow with the Rutgers University Center for Global Work and Employment\, and Associate Senior Fellow with the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute.\n\n🧠📚💡Abstract: Systemic inequalities at the beginning of one’s career can lead to persistent differences in compensation and job status. Using proprietary panel data from the Asian Development Bank spanning 2000–2022\, this study investigates gender differences in each stage of one’s career path—entry\, promotion\, and exit—for internationally recruited staff. Analysis of staff grade level at entry using an ordered probit model reveals that women hired in the early years of the data were more likely to enter at lower levels than men\, holding endowments constant.\n\nHowever\, estimates of Cox proportional hazard models indicate that there are no gender differences in the likelihood of getting promoted or leaving the firm. Taken together\, the results suggest that gender differences at entry can persist\, complicating a firm’s efforts to eliminate gender disparities among staff. The level at which staff are hired is critical for determining their career path within the organization. The interplay between who gets hired for what hiring positions and compensation level establishes a career dynamic that ultimately shapes the gender gap among staff.\n\n📝 Please register using the links below or by scanning the QR codes in the poster:\n📍 Onsite: https://tinyurl.com/57dk3bvh\nZoom: https://tinyurl.com/53ab8r6s\n\n👀 We’d love to see you there!\n\nSource: UP School of Economics Facebook

SUMMARY:Health Updates Webinar #282 "Ano ang benepisyo ng Qi Gong at Tai Chi? For Healthy Aging"
DESCRIPTION:The University of the Philippines\,\nin partnership with the UP Manila – National Institutes of Health\,\nand in cooperation with UP Philippine General Hospital and UP College of Medicine\,\nwould like to invite you to attend this webinar! \n  \nRegistration slots are limited to this HEALTH UPDATES webinar\nSo sign up NOW:\nbit.ly/HealthUpdatesWebinar282 \n  \nWebinar #282\nApril 24\, 2026 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nAno ang Benepisyo ng Qi Gong at Tai Chi?\nFor Healthy Aging\n\nPresenter:\nDr. Shelly Ann F. Dela Vega\nDirector\, Institute on Aging\nUP – National Institutes of Health\nProfessor Department of Medicine\nUP College of Medicine and Philippine General Hospital\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #282\nApril 24\, 2026 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nAno ang Benepisyo ng Qi Gong at Tai Chi?\nFor Healthy Aging\n\nIn an era defined by a rapid demographic transition toward an increasingly aging global population\, the clinical imperative to identify sustainable\, low-impact\, and high-efficacy interventions has never been more pressing. We are honored to invite you to a specialized webinar that bridges the gap between ancient Eastern philosophies and contemporary evidence-based geriatric care\, focusing on the profound benefits of Qi Gong and Tai Chi. In this week’s episode\, we will deconstruct the physiological and psychological mechanisms that make these “meditative movements” essential tools in the modern healthcare professional’s arsenal and the layperson’s wellness journey.\n\nOur discourse will move beyond anecdotal appreciation to examine the rigorous scientific literature surrounding neuroplasticity and the stabilization of the autonomic nervous system. Participants will explore how the rhythmic\, slow-velocity movements inherent in Tai Chi enhance proprioceptive feedback and neuromuscular coordination\, directly addressing the multifactorial risks associated with sarcopenia and geriatric falls. In addition\, we will discuss the biochemical shifts elicited by these practices\, specifically the modulation of cortisol levels and the upregulation of parasympathetic activity\, which collectively foster a state of systemic homeostasis and improved immunological resilience. This scientific synthesis is designed to provide medical practitioners with a robust framework for recommending these modalities as part of a comprehensive preventative care strategy.\n\nIn this webinar\, we will highlight the cognitive benefits of these practices\, particularly in preserving executive function and visuospatial processing in older adults. When we integrate these low-risk\, cost-effective interventions into standard care pathways\, healthcare providers can facilitate a paradigm shift from reactive treatment to proactive\, holistic wellness.\n\nOur speaker is Dr. Shelley Ann F. Dela Vega\, who is the Director of the Institute on Aging\, UP – National Institutes of Health and is also a Professor at the Department of Medicine\, UP College of Medicine and Philippine General Hospital. Join us as we navigate the frontier where traditional mindfulness meets the rigorous scrutiny of geriatric medicine to redefine the trajectory of healthy aging.
