SUMMARY:“Sulat: Retelling Rizal through Philately”
DESCRIPTION:University of the Philippines Fine Arts professor\, painter and philatelist Marco Ruben T. Malto II undertakes to revisit the life and legacy of the foremost Filipino hero within the realm of philately in his solo exhibit titled “Sulat: Retelling Rizal through Philately.” In partnership with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines through Museo ni Jose Rizal Fort Santiago\, Malto curates his personal collection featuring philatelic items\, artifacts\, and archival materials to commemorate Jose Rizal’s 126th Death Anniversary this December.\n\nThink of our most revered Filipino patriot Jose Rizal as a TikToker creating POVs on his travels\, or talking about our Spanish colonial conditions and his aspirations for la Patria mia! Can you imagine his firing squad footage going viral? How would cancel culture deal with his highly controversial views?\n\nEven in the absence of the internet and social media platforms during his time\, Jose Rizal was every bit a blogger\, a celebrity\, a content creator and an influencer with a massive following. Instead of posts\, tweets or video uploads\, Rizal shared his ideas\, and ideals\, through his most notable novels\, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo\, his socio-political essays published in La Solidaridad\, and his countless other writings that resonate with Filipinos. As National Artist Nick Joaquin once wrote of Rizal’s influence while still in his teens\, “Already\, what writings of his reach the public are stirring up storms.” Rizal\, a diligent diarist and prolific correspondent\, covered topics from cholera to lottery when not discussing duty to country or complaining about high cost of postage stamps in his letters sent to family\, friends\, lovers\, and compatriots. Whether on overseas sojourn or in exile\, Rizal was able to mail his crucial correspondence due to the already established postal system in the country during his time.  \n\nAs the most documented Filipino in the 19th century\, Rizal’s written works and treasured mementos were duly preserved\, allowing future Filipinos to discover the makings of the most prominent advocate for Philippine reforms during the Spanish regime\, and the nation he fought for. The extensive record of his life firmly seals Jose Rizal’s “national hero” stature in Philippine history\, and his legacy continues to inspire generations of Filipinos\, 126 years after his execution.  \n\nhttps://www.rappler.com/bulletin-board/up-professor-painter-exhibits-retelling-rizal-stamps/

Banahaw in Southern Luzon\, Philippines.\n\nCorachea is an artist with an interest in the relationship and intersections of faith and mysticism\n\nUPB College of Arts and Communication Facebook page\n\nSource: University of the Philippines Baguio Facebook

Jose\nHead\, Expanded Education and Training Office\nUP Philippine General Hospital\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #130\nJanuary 20\, 2023\nMasakit ang Puson: Endometrosis kaya?\n\nThe Philippine General Hospital is observing an increase in numbers of women consulting for pelvic pain then diagnosed later as endometriosis. Special clinics have been opened to provide services for this surge in cases.\n\nEndometriosis is a disease where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus\, causing pain and/or infertility. Globally it affects about 10% of women and girls of reproductive age. It is a chronic disease associated with severe\, life-impacting pain during periods\, sexual intercourse\, bowel movements and/or urination\, chronic pelvic pain\, abdominal bloating\, nausea\, fatigue\, and sometimes depression\, anxiety\, and infertility.\n\nBut there seems to be limited awareness about endometriosis — leading to delayed treatment and undue suffering. Is it possible that during the pandemic\, women who experienced pelvic pain paid less attention to this\, resulting in many delayed diagnosis today?\n\nIn this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS\, we will take a closer look at endometriosis – its signs and symptoms and when consultation for pelvic pain is necessary. The main presenter is OB-GYN and infertility specialist and past president of the Philippine Society for Reproductive Medicine\, Dr. Angela Aguilar and the reactor is Dr. Gladys Tanangonan\, who subspecializes in reproductive endocrinology and infertility\, both from the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the UP Philippine General Hospital. Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose\, newly-appointed head of the Expanded Education and Training Office of the UP Philippine General Hospital.\n\nJoin us as we learn more about how COVID-19 has affected health services and contributed to new problems we face in public health.  Together\, we can Stop C.O.V.I.D. Deaths!

SUMMARY:Pagsalud han Dan-ag han Adlaw / Cupping the Flow of Sunlight (Gleanings from the Natural and Cultural Heritage of Eastern Visayas)
DESCRIPTION:Pagsalud han Dan-ag han Adlaw / Cupping the Flow of Sunlight (Gleanings from the Natural and Cultural Heritage of Eastern Visayas)\n\nAll are invited to visit UP Tacloban’s 50th anniversary exhibit at the Robinson’s North Activity Center during mall hours on 23-24 January 2023.\n\nThe interactive educational exhibit is the kickoff activity for UP Tacloban’s year-long celebration of its 50th founding anniversary. The exhibit features paintings\, photographs\, specimens\, maps\, and multimedia productions drawn from some of the research and creative work undertaken by UP Tacloban scholars\, as well as a full-sized replica of the UP Oblation by UP Artist and Professor Emeritus Grace Javier Alfonso as centerpiece. There are also scheduled performances\, short lectures\, workshops\, and book launchings during the two-day event.\n\nThe exhibit title “Pagsalud han dan-ag han adlaw” is Victor Sugbo’s translation of a line from his poem “The Fishers.” The line is part of a longer segment — “Beneath the mangrove trees\, boats / Cupping the flow of sunlight / As if rainwater filling up an empty jar” — that we take as a metaphor for the scholarly and creative work of UP Tacloban faculty\, staff\, and students on the natural and cultural heritage of Eastern Visayas.\n\nThe exhibit motif is mangroves\, symbolizing the rich biodiversity\, culture\, and traditions of Region 8\, as well as the resilience of Eastern Visayan communities in the face of various natural calamities and social upheavals. It is also symbolic of the interconnectedness of the scholarly disciplines in critical and creative thinking and doing.\n\nThrough this showcase of its knowledge production as an institution of higher learning over the past 50 years\, UP Tacloban hopes to inspire and engage the people of Eastern Visayas in the critical work of natural and cultural heritage preservation\, environmental and biodiversity conservation\, community empowerment\, and sustainable development.\n\n#UPTaclobanAt50\n\nSource: UPV Tacloban College Facebook

After three years of dormancy\, The UP Painters’ Club (UPPC) is finally back to present what the organization’s resident members and alumni could offer with their skillful hands and eleventh extra finger\, ika-labing isang daliri\, figuratively the media or tool of their choice which makes the creation of their artworks possible. The annual art exhibit serves as an avenue for the artists to express themselves in different shapes and forms\, and to continue uplifting visual arts appreciation across different communities.\n\nThe UPPC is the longest-living visual arts organization in the science- and technology-oriented University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB). From the Visionaries\, Teserae\, and 30 years later with batch Figulus\, the organization remains to be a safe haven of visual arts in UPLB. Since then\, UPPC has become an avenue for artists and art enthusiasts alike devoted to enhancing their skills and talents in the field of visual arts.\n\nLabing-Isang Daliri 2023 is not merely an art exhibit\, but also a celebration of artistry from different generations and academic fields. It is an event that serves as a reminder to everyone\, artists and art enthusiasts of different backgrounds\, that there is a space for us\, and for the artworks that we make or we will make with our hands and our chosen eleventh finger.\n\nSource: UPLB Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts Facebook
