SUMMARY:Unfolding (언폴딩) Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Unfolding (언폴딩)\nInhwan Oh and Kyungmook Kim\nPreview on 14 December 2024\, on view until 22 February 2025\n1/F Galleries\nUP Vargas Museum\n\nThe UP Vargas Museum\, together with the Ministry of Culture\, Sports\, and Tourism of the Republic of Korea\, the Korea Arts Management Service\, and the Fund for Korean Art Abroad\, presents the exhibition of works by artists Inhwan Oh and Kyungmook Kim organized by Dominic Mangila. Unfolding (언폴딩) considers the experiences of two artists who embody othered identities in a society largely devoted to masculine ideals. Inhwan Oh and Kyungmook Kim unpack vignettes of life in South Korea as members of the LGBTQIA+ community in film and video works\, and through art that engages labor and marks processes.\n\nThrough them\, they summon the worlds of prisons and places of incarceration juxtaposed with spaces of freedom and gaiety– to discover and mark a social identity that refuses to settle with the laws and sanctions of a patriarchal nation.\n\nUnfolding (언폴딩) will be on view at the 1/F Galleries of the UP Vargas Museum starting 14 December 2024. Write to vargasmuseum@up.edu.ph for details and related information. The museum is located inside the University of the Philippines Diliman Campus and is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays except holidays\, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.\n\nFor updates on events\, exhibitions\, and advisories check our socials on Facebook\, Instagram\, or Twitter @upvargasmuseum.\n\n__________________________\nAbout the artist\n\nInhwan Oh\n\nInhwan Oh (b. 1965) is Associate Professor at the Department of Painting of the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University. His participatory works and site-specific projects contextualize a particular space and time and seek to dismantle the cultural codes formed in the relationship between the identities of individuals and groups within a patriarchal society. Some of his more recent solo exhibitions were held at the Smith Gallery of Davidson College in North Carolina (2019)\, BAIK ART in Los Angeles\, California (2019)\, and Bongsan Cultural Center\, South Korea (2018) He recently participated in group exhibitions at the Arsenale in Venice\, Italy (2019) and at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Gwacheon\, South Korea (2018). He was a recipient of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and SBS Foundation’s Korea Artist Prize in 2015.\nKyungmook Kim\nKyungmook Kim’s (b. 1985) video art\, documentary\, and narrative films expand the form of cinema by exploring the precarity of the marginalized such as homosexuals\, transsexuals\, sex workers\, and North Korean defectors. He made his directorial debut with Me and Doll-playing in 2004. Some of his other notable films include his Things Trilogy (2005-2014)\, A Cheonggyecheon Dog (2008)\, and Grace Period (2015). His films have been selected for and received awards in international film festivals such as the Venice Film Festival the BFI London Film Festival\, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Among his awards include the Idea Generation Grant of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2019)\, The Association of Korean Independent Film & Video’s Indie Filmmaker of the Year Award (2014)\, and Muju International Film Festival’s Best Director Award (2014).\n_________________________\nAbout the museum\n\nThe University of the Philippines Jorge B. SUMMARY:BANTAYANON: "Liminality" as an Identifying Feature of Bantayanon Grammar
DESCRIPTION:[Philippine Indigenous Languages Lecture Series]\nBANTAYANON [bfx]: “Liminality” as an Identifying Feature of Bantayanon Grammar\n31 January | Friday | 1:00 PM\nCSSP Health & Wellness Center\n\nBrian Baran\nInstructor\nUP Department of Linguistics\n\n—\n\nThe opening installment of the 2025 Philippine Indigenous Languages Lecture Series (PILLS) will be on Bantayanon [bfx]\, a language spoken on the Bantayan island in Cebu and surrounding islands.\n\n—\n\nBantayanon (ISO 639-3 [bfx]) is a language that is not too well known outside of its home Island of Bantayan in the Province of Cebu. That may be because the language has been and perhaps continues to be confused with Cebuano\, Hiligaynon\, and the other languages spoken on the island and this multilingual nature of the Bantayanon and tendency to switch to Cebuano has resulted in some speakers describing their speech as saksak-sinagol ‘hodgepodge.’\n\nWhile Bantayanon is and should be considered a distinct language\, I attempt to show in this lecture that the boundaries between Bantayanon and the other languages of Bantayan are not discrete and that this “liminality” or in-betweenness is the identifying and distinguishing feature of Bantayanon grammar. To demonstrate this\, I will look at three examples of liminality in the language’s grammar including the varying realizations of the lateral consonant /l/\, the dichotomy between the markers =y and sing\, and the synonymity of lat\, pod\, and sad ‘also.’ I will also attempt to explore some of the possible functionalities of this liminality in linguistic accommodation\, identity establishment\, and boundary-making and their implications in the further study of Bantayanon and other similar languages as indiscrete yet distinct grammatical systems.\n\nAng Bantayanon nga Binisaya (ISO 639-3 [bfx])\, usa sya ka sinultian nga di kaayo kilyado sa gwa sang Isla sang Bantayan sa Lalawigan sang Sugbo. UP Department of Linguistics Facebook

SUMMARY:Participatory Tools and Mapping Methods for Community-Engaged Learning
DESCRIPTION:Consultation\, collaboration\, outreach and shared leadership are some of the key words/terms that characterise the works of community-engaged geographers involved in participatory mapping practices and advocacies.\n\nCommunity-engaged learning emphasizes collaboration and participation to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes for both students and community partners. By connecting concepts with real-world applications\, this approach enables students to actively contribute to solving local challenges while developing critical thinking\, problem-solving\, and collaboration skills. It facilitates the connection between higher education and local communities by fostering community awareness and encouraging the involvement of students in addressing pressing local issues.\n\nFor the first Heo/Geo lecture for 2025\, the Philippine Geographical Society (PGS) and the UP Department of Geography through its Geographic Information Systems and Techniques (GIST) research group\, cordially invite you to a lecture of UPD Geography faculty Ma. Simeona Martinez titled Participatory Tools and Mapping Methods for Community-Engaged Learning. This online talk will be on Friday\, the 31st of January 2025 at 5:30 in the afternoon.\n\nIn Ony Martinez’s community-engaged research\, mapping and spatial tools contribute to place-based learning by enabling students and communities to visualize places at various scales and explore the distribution of spatial features such as infrastructure or resources in relation to potentials and risks in their locality and surrounding areas. In effect\, spatial tools help educators and students bridge the gap between abstract knowledge and community realities. Similarly\, maps serve as essential resources for community members to identify challenges and devise strategies to address these issues collaboratively.\n\nThis lecture introduces practical tools and participatory mapping methods that educators can integrate into their teaching practices to promote collaborative and experiential learning. These methods\, traditionally used for community appraisal\, mobilization\, and planning\, facilitate working with communities in documenting community assets and in addressing spatial issues in a collective and engaging way\, where students co-produce meaningful outputs in partnership with community members and support organizations. Through participatory mapping\, students and communities can collaboratively document assets and analyze community issues. Drawing on both literature and personal experience\, the presentation will reflect on the contextuality of place\, forms of participation\, and the role spatial technologies in fostering critical place-based and community-oriented learning.\n\nProf Ony Martinez teaches mapping methods and the use of Geographic Information Systems for collaborative research in diverse areas such as hazard and disaster risk reduction\, land cover change\, and development planning. She also develops learning modules on digital cartography and basic techniques in analyzing and interpreting remotely-sensed imagery. She is co-convenor of the Program on Alternative Development in the University of the Philippines Center for Integrative and Development Studies (UP CIDS- AltDev) and a member of the core research team of Counter-mapping PH Network.\n\nThe talk given by Ony Martinez is the 85th lecture since the Department of Geography re-instituted (and subsequently rebranded the Geography Colloquium into the Heo/Geo Lecture Series) a space that invites academics\, civil society\, community and industry practitioners to share their research\, advocacy\, and technology-knowledge to geography students\, faculty and staff. Prof Martinez’s talk fits most of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by United Nations Sustainable Development\, but especially #10 (Reduced Inequalities) and #11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).\n\nTo participate in the talk\, please register through this link: https://tinyurl.com/54zf2uwd\n\nSource: UP Department of Geography Facebook

MARIA LUISA S. ACU\nVice Dean\, St. Luke’s Medical Center – College of Medicine\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #225\nFebruary 7\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nRepeat Caesarean ba Kaagad?\nWhen to Do Vaginal Birth After Caesarean Section\n\nThe landscape of obstetric care has evolved significantly\, with vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) emerging as a viable and often preferred option for many women. While cesarean sections remain a necessary and life-saving procedure in certain circumstances\, the increasing recognition of the benefits associated with vaginal delivery has prompted a renewed focus on VBAC as a safe and effective alternative for eligible candidates. In this week’s episode\, we will discuss the critical aspects of and best practices related to VBAC.\n\nWe will explore the historical context of VBAC\, tracing its evolution from initial concerns regarding uterine rupture to the present day\, where robust research and refined clinical protocols have established its safety and efficacy. We will examine the selection criteria for VBAC candidacy\, highlighting the factors that contribute to successful outcomes and identifying those situations where VBAC may not be advisable. Our speakers will present a thorough review of the risks and benefits associated with both VBAC and elective repeat cesarean section (ERCS). This comparative analysis will include a discussion of maternal morbidity and mortality\, neonatal outcomes\, and long-term implications for future pregnancies. In addition\, we will address the practical aspects of managing labor and delivery in VBAC candidates. This will encompass a review of intrapartum monitoring techniques\, strategies for promoting spontaneous labor\, and the appropriate use of interventions when necessary.\n\nOur main presenter is Dr. Menefrida S. Reyes\, who is a senior consultant from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the St. Luke’s Medical Center – Quezon City. She is also a former Chair of the Philippine Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Our reactor is Dr. Maria Luisa S. Acu\, who serves as Vice Dean at the St. Luke’s Medical Center – College of Medicine.\n\nJoin us as we discuss the importance of patient education and shared decision-making for anyone seeking to understand the options available for childbirth after a prior cesarean.\n\nTogether\, we can stop preventable deaths.
