SUMMARY:The End of World Order or the Birth of a New One? | A Lecture by Amitav Acharya\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is invited to a lecture\, “The “End of World Order?” Or the Birth of a New One?\,” featuring Dr. Amitav Acharya. The lecture will take place on two dates and venues.\n\nThe first will be held on 25 October 2024\, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm\, at the Performing Arts Hall\, UP Cebu\, Cebu City.\n\nThe second is scheduled for 29 October 2024\, 10:00 A.M. – 12:00 N.N\, at the Malcolm Hall Theater\, UP College of Law\, Diliman\, Quezon City.\n\nThe event is free and open to the public\, but seating is first-come\, first-served. Participants are encouraged to pre-register. \nSIGN UP: YES\, I WILL ATTEND!\n\nABSTRACT\n\nCreating and managing world order is not the monopoly of any nation or civilization. The present world order is no exception.\n\nIt is the creation of many societies and states over a long period of time\, during which non-Western elements or contributions have been embedded but often obscured by Western colonialism and dominance for the past few hundred years. Some of the most progressive principles of world order today—such as republican government\, diplomacy\, peace-making\, inter-state cooperation\, sustainable ecology\, human rights\, humanitarian warfare\, economic interdependence\, and freedom of seas—are not unique products of the West but have parallel or prior non-Western origins.\n\nThe relative decline of the West and the return/rise of “Rest” are leading to renegotiation of approaches to world order\, in which some of the distinctive contributions and preferences of non-Western nations are coming into greater play. The result is not “the end of world order” as Western leaders and pundits lament\, but the birth of a more inclusive and multi-civilizational form\, which Dr. Acharya has called a multiplex world.\n\nSPEAKER\n\nAmitav Acharya\, Ph.D. is the UNESCO Chair in Transnational Challenges and Governance and Distinguished Professor at the School of International Service\, American University\, Washington\, DC. He previously was a Professor at York University\, Toronto and the University of Bristol\, U.K.\, Fellow of Harvard University’s Asia Center\, a Research Fellow of Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government\, and a Christensen Fellow at St Catherine’s College\, Oxford.\n\nHis forthcoming book is The Once and Future World Order: Why Global Civilization will Survive the Decline of the West (New York and London: Basic Books)\, a 5000-year history of world order building across multiple civilizations around the globe.\n\nQUERIES AND ORGANIZER INFO\n\nFor queries\, please email ssp.cids@up.edu.ph\n\nThe lecture is organized by the Strategic Studies Program of the UP Center of Integrative and Development Studies (CIDS)\, the University’s policy unit. Visit the UP CIDS Database and download 1000+ policy papers.\n\nThis event is also co-presented by the Decolonial Studies Program (DSP) and the Urban Studies Program (USP)\, both of UP CIDS\, along with the Department of Political Science\, UP Cebu College of Social Sciences; the UP Cebu Political Science Society; Office of International Linkages\, University of the Philippines; and the Department of Political Science\, UP Diliman.

SUMMARY:“Games\, Changes\, and Fears: The Philippines From Duterte to Marcos Jr.”
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the book launch of Games\, Changes\, and Fears: The Philippines From Duterte to Marcos Jr.\, edited by UP Department of Political Science Professors Aries A. Arugay and Jean Encinas-Franco\, on 24 October\, Thursday\, 2:30–4:00 p.m.\, at Pilar Herrera Hall\, Palma Hall. Copies of the book will be sold at a discounted rate during the event.\n\nFormer Senator Leila de Lima will deliver a message\, to be followed by a panel discussion with the chapter contributors. Professor Emeritus Teresa Encarnacion Tadem of the UP Department of Political Science will serve as the reactor. The event will be moderated by Christian Esguerra\, host of Facts First.\n\nThis event is part of celebrations for the 41st Founding Anniversary of the UP College of Social Sciences and Philosophy this October 2024.\n\nSee you there!\n\nAbout the book\n\nRodrigo Duterte’s rise and the Marcoses’ return to power have captivated Southeast Asia watchers and the rest of the world. That the spectacle of strongman rule has allured most Filipinos is no longer in doubt\, with the strong electoral mandate garnered by Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in 2022. Whether their capture of state power is in any way connected and what this portends about the country’s democratic future is a key theme marking Games\, Changes\, and Fears.\n\nIn this volume\, Filipino academics and practitioners provide much needed analysis about this political succession and what it means for Asia’s oldest republic. Packed with thirteen chapters depicting insightful trends and prognosis on the Philippine economy\, domestic politics\, foreign policy\, and society\, this volume offers scholars\, students\, and policymakers with the analytical repertoire to understand developments in the Philippines.\n\nhttps://bookshop.iseas.edu.sg/publication/7900\n\nSource: UP Department of Political Science Facebook

DESCRIPTION:AMBIENT IMAGES II\n\nIn celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Month\, the UP Center for Ethnomusicology\, in an inaugural partnership with the UP Film Institute and with the support of the Office of the UP Diliman Chancellor\, presents the film festival “Ambient Images II.” A second iteration\, the event continues the Center’s advocacy of representing the people and musical cultures of the Philippines\, Asia\, and other regions of the Global South. The festival will feature short and full-length documentary and fictional works\, supplemented by musical performances as well as commentaries and live discussions with filmmakers\, that explore dynamic identities mediated through history and geographic movements\, sound\, technology\, the imperial gaze\, and self-reflection. Ambient Images II will run on October 21\, 22\, 24\, and 25 at various venues of the UP Film Center Complex in Diliman\, Quezon City.\n\nAmbient Images II’s selections engage the many guises of empire that inhabit technologies of communication; polar trajectories of Indigenous experience\, one on the brink of moral erasure\, the other promising redemption through self-rediscovery; messy\, ethnographic realisms as an antidote to orientalist tendencies; and pursuits of existential meaning across space and time within broad autobiographical realms.\n\nScreenings will be held at the Ishmael Bernal Gallery\, Videotheque\, and Perfume Garden. SUMMARY:Vargas Conversations: Jon Cuyson and Eli Guieb III
DESCRIPTION:Vargas Conversations: Jon Cuyson and Eli Guieb III\nTAONG DAGAT (People of the Sea) collateral event\n22 October 2024\, Tuesday | 2:30 – 4:30 PM\n1/F Galleries\, UP Vargas Museum\nRegister to join\, bit.ly/UPVMTaongDagatTalk.\n\nThe UP Vargas Museum invites everyone to a conversation between Jon Cuyson and Eli Guieb III\, a collateral event for the exhibition TAONG DAGAT People of the Sea) on 22 October 2024\, Tuesday from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. The event is free and open to the public. The discussion seeks to deepen our understanding of the politics of representation and the modes through which the exhibition explores various positionalities to do with belonging\, gender\, and labor.\n\nTAONG DAGAT (People of the Sea) expands Cuyson’s exploration of the sea as a symbol of the sublime and as a mirror of the soul. Cuyson summons our shared maritime heritage as a memory vault\, much like a ship’s cargo hold\, locating the sea inside and beyond us so it becomes an all-encompassing site\, its surface and depths shifting\, in movements that alternate between the volatile and imperceptible\, like the Earth’s tectonic shifts or the planet’s orbital rotation. Deploying the formal language of minimalism and abstraction TAONG DAGAT (People of the Sea) presents abstract paintings and sculpture alongside a newly produced film Wet Dreams.\n\nTAONG DAGAT (People of the Sea) is currently on view at the 1/F Galleries of the UP Vargas Museum until 09 November 2024. Write vargasmuseum@up.edu.ph for details and related information. The museum is inside the University of the Philippines Diliman Campus and is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays except holidays\, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. For updates on events\, exhibitions\, and advisories check our socials on Facebook\, Instagram\, or Twitter @upvargasmuseum.\n\n__________________________\n\nAbout the speakers\n\nJon Cuyson\nJon Cuyson is an artist\, educator\, production designer\, and filmmaker. He has participated in artist residencies in Maine and Vermont\, USA. Cuyson established Everyday Productions which produces his artistic and commercial projects in 2010. Dodge Foundation (2006)\, the Iowa Arts Council Mini Grant Award (2008)\, and the Jamaica Flux Workspaces and Windows (2007). Cuyson has an MFA from Columbia University in New York.\n\nEli Guieb III\nEli Rueda Guieb III is Professor at the Department of Broadcast Communication at the University of the Philippines Diliman. Vargas Museum and Filipiniana Research Center is a center for Philippine art and culture with research\, curation\, and education as its core thrusts. The Museum is home to the collection of art\, books\, archives\, memorabilia\, coins\, and stamps of Jorge B. Vargas\, a significant political figure in the twentieth-century Philippines and an alumnus of the University of the Philippines.\n\nAn avid collector with a vision of sharing Philippine art with future generations\, Jorge Vargas donated the holdings he acquired across his illustrious career in public service\, sports\, and scouting to his alma mater in 1978. Since it opened its doors to the public in 1987\, the UP Vargas Museum has been visited by students\, researchers\, scholars\, and the public. The Museum has galleries for permanent as well as changing exhibitions.
