SUMMARY:DSCTA Brown Bag Sessions : Dramaturgy and the Archipelago
DESCRIPTION:DSCTA Brown Bag Sessions\n\nEveryone is invited to watch and learn in the next installment of DSCTA Brown Bag Session with the topic of Dramaturgy and the Archipelago featuring the talks of DSCTA faculty members\, 𝐴𝑠𝑠𝑡. 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑓. 𝑃𝑜𝑝𝑜 𝐴𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑐𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑀𝑟. 𝐽𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑠 𝐺𝑎𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑙 𝐺𝑎𝑟𝑐𝑖𝑎\, and moderated by Asst. Prof. Anna Lisa Gamboa.\n\n📅 Date: 14 October 2024\n⏰ Time 2:00 PM [Manila Time]\n📍 Platform: via Zoom\n🔗Zoom Link: https://up-edu.zoom.us/j/96035194287\n🔗Meeting ID: 960 3519 4287\n🔗Passcode: DramaArchi\n\nKumpas at Kaldag: Towards an archipelagic\, algorithmic\, and decolonized dramaturgy\nby Mr. Jonas Gabriel Garcia\n\nFrom its earlier conceptions as the intellectual elite of a production\, a researcher\, and a dramatist\, the role of a dramaturg\, as it redefines itself\, has taken its leaps and bounds throughout the development of Philippine Theater; none more so than the age we live in. An era wherein anyone can become an ‘expert’ in any given area of concentration overnight\, whether driven by practical need or creative endeavor..\n\nGiven this epoch\, this paper evaluates\, examines\, and acknowledges Philippine dramaturgy in the contemporary theatre scene by closely observing and reassessing the experiences of author’s recent dramaturgical work in productions namely being: Kung Paano Nanalo Sa Karera si Rosang Taba\, O’Donnell\, and Sidhi’t Silakbo; in order to offer a preliminary and contemporary answer to the question: What is dramaturgy in the context of the Philippines?\n\n“Mito han Panhitabo”: The Drematurgy of War and Brecht in an Anti-Musical Play\nby Asst. Prof. Popo Amascual\n\nThis presentation is centering on executing in a performative lens the multilayered experiences of the Moro Conflict in 1970s Philippines as portrayed in the play “Nanay Bangis” using the dramaturgical concept\, “Mito han Panhitabo” (or “Myth of the happening”). The Myth of the Happening is a concept that speculates over the Maranao way of life during the Martial Law and the marvels of Bertolt Brecht’s verfremdungseffekt to objectively present the realities of war. “Nanay Bangis” is an adaptation of Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children written by Rody Vera and directed by Herbie Go and employs the elements of epic theatre’s distance effect to highlight an intellectual discussion on the horrors of armed conflict.\n\nIt is Dulaang UP’s opening production for its 47th theatre season\, Amihan at Habagat that seeks to make sense of the shifts and struggles between the human condition and its surrounding natural environment to see just what kind of forces drive disagreements that risk innocent lives. Through “Mito han Panhitabo”\, researched factual data lead speculation over the conditions of the Moro Conflict through a disruption of the magic of theatre to evoke emotions by expressing feelings and sentiments about the issue instead using conventions of verfremdungseffekt.\n\n“Mito han Panhitabo” merges realistic details and awkward spectacle to present a commentary on actual events and to challenge the spectators to join in disowning leaders that support these wars\, among other powers behind sustaining the sieges and pillages as a form of misdirection from capitalist agendas.\n\n——\n\nDSCTA Brown Bag Sessions is a lecture series of the UP Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts designed to provide an opportunity for its faculty members to present their ongoing research projects and creative works to the general public. Each program will highlight presenters that will talk about a specific topic within Speech Communication and Theatre Arts\, promoting interdisciplinary dialogues and fostering a deeper understanding of disciplines.\n\nThese sessions aim to foster potential collaborations\, a culture of meaningful academic discourse\, and a platform for knowledge exchange.\n\nSource: UP Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts Facebook

SUMMARY:Vargas After-Hours: Vinyl Night
DESCRIPTION:12 October 2024\nVargas After-Hours: Vinyl Night\n7:00 PM onwards\nRegister\, bit.ly/VargasAfterHoursVinylNight.\n\nAre you ready to take a spin? The UP Vargas Museum presents Vargas After-Hours: Vinyl Night—an evening of art\, sound\, music\, and more.\n\nLike the soft crackle of a record when the needle drops\, the melodic trail of this third Vargas After-Hours event began when the Vargas Museum staff discovered boxes of vinyl and phonograph records previously owned by Jorge B. Vargas. The records of fox trots and jazz standards can be dated to the 1930s to the 1940s\, indicated by their form\, and were most likely played in the home of the Vargas family while they entertained guests. The first home of the Vargas collection is the Kawilihan Compound in suburban Mandaluyong. Today\, these objects are portals into the soundscape of a place that no longer exists spatially\, but whose existence is remembered by way of the museum’s archives.\n\nSound and visual artist Arvin Nogueras\, also known as Caliph8\, will be engaging the records from the Vargas memorabilia to create a new sound art piece. Through sampling\, sound manipulation\, and live improvisation\, Nogueras will be debuting this new work during the Vargas After-Hours event on the evening of 12 October 2024. The performance will be preceded by a discussion at 7 PM with Nogueras in conversation with museum curator Tessa Maria Guazon about sound art\, the process of working with the museum’s sound archive\, and Nogueras’s composition practice. This event is a prelude to the reopening of the museum’s memorabilia exhibition.\n\nVargas After-Hours is the museum’s recent public program—where lights are dimmed and doors are kept open beyond viewing hours to feature a series of evening events at the museum. This approach draws closely from Jorge B. Vargas’s use of the Kawilihan compound\, his residential homestead. The Kawilihan was the site of various social events in the evening such as celebrations and gatherings with different cultural performances which the Vargases hosted over several decades.\n\nThis idea of a transformative use of space is amplified by the museum through various events combining music\, art\, and performance. Vargas After-Hours is a shift in the UP Vargas Museum’s spatial function\, parallel to Kawilihan’s history as a social hub\, beyond typical viewing times and when the day turns to dusk.\n\nExperience a vinyl night unlike any other—secure your tickets to the museum after hours!\n\nTicket prices:\n200 php for UP students*\n350 php regular pre-selling (until 11 October 2024\, 11:59 pm only)\n500 php door price\nLimited tickets are available! Buy our regular pre-selling tickets now\, bit.ly/VargasAfterHoursVinylNight.\n\n*upon presentation of ID and available only for purchase at the UP Vargas Museum reception. One discounted ticket per UP student only. PWD and Senior discounts are also only available via our museum reception.\n\nVargas After-Hours is a fundraising program for the museum for its future projects. The event is at the UP Vargas Museum\, Roxas Avenue\, University of the Philippines\, Diliman\, Quezon City. SUMMARY:"Shields of the people’: Disaster Risk Reduction education for building up agents of resilience and responsibilised citizens"
DESCRIPTION:What comprises the right education for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)? This oft-asked question has long intrigued educators and field practitioners when viewing what builds a culture of safety and resilience among society’s vulnerable sectors.\n\nFor the latest paper presentation of the Heo/Geo Lecture Series for 2024\, DRR will be spotlit as a global policy initiative to build resilience in hazards-exposed communities. Sponsored jointly by the UPD Department of Geography and the Philippine Geographical Society (PGS) the Heo/Geo Lecture Series presents “‘Shields of the people’: Disaster Risk Reduction education for building up agents of resilience and responsibilised citizens” to be presented by Dr Liberty de Rivera on Friday\, 11 October 2024 at 5:30PM Philippine time UTC+8 / 7:30PM AEST UTC+10).\n\nFor this presentation\, Dr de Rivera interrogates the rhetoric of resilience building through education by investigating its contrasting features as an agentic concept and a responsibilising device. Through an ethnographic reading of DRR education programmes in Aparri town in the Philippines\, she will illustrate how resilience as a polyvalent construct creates a double-bind of creating spaces for education actors and learners; participation and empowerment while legitimising patterns of deflection of responsibilities. Dr de Rivera centres the analysis on the metaphorical reference of students as Salaknib Dagiti Tattao\, or shields of the people\, and the designation of teachers as disaster responders to demonstrate how emerging labels and expectations about resilient citizenship must be reflexively developed and critically enacted. Inherent within these programmes are features that might depoliticise disasters and overshadow the need to uphold accountability and responsibility.\n\nDr Liberty Pascua de Rivera is Vice-Chancellor Research Fellow at the Faculty of Education of Southern Cross University. Her research interests include analysing and evaluating policies and their implementation in the areas of education for sustainable development\, climate change\, and disaster risk reduction. Central to her research is the idea of cognitive justice—what\, or whose knowledge\, is emphasised\, neglected\, and minoritised in processes of policy cascade.\n\nLiberty obtained her BA in Communication Research degree from the UP College of Mass Communication and her Master of Development Studies and PhD from the University of Sydney. Liberty has taught\, conducted research\, and engaged in development work in Singapore\, the Philippines\, Vanuatu\, and Australia. She is the treasurer of the Oceania Comparative and International Education Society – OCIES where she also co-leads the New and Emerging Researchers of OCIES. Liberty is an Associate Editor of the International Research in Geographical and Environmental Education (IRGEE) journal. Liberty is from the province of Apayao. She is the mother to two-year-old Kappia and partner to Ryan.\n\nThe Heo/Geo Lecture Series is a space to share and exchange ideas on a wide variety of geographical topics that intersect methodologies\, discourses\, technologies\, pedagogies\, and practices. Faculty\, students\, alumni and local and foreign geography and geography-adjacent researchers delivered various presentations in previous academic years fulfilling one of the Department’s mission: to popularize geography as an academic discipline through research and practice.\n\nThis presentation is sponsored through Geographies of Disasters and Hazards (G-DASH)\, and the Human Geography (HuG) and Media\, Literary Geographies\, and Geohumanities (MELANGE) research groups of the UP Diliman Department of Geography and in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goal #3 (Good health and well-being) and #4 (Quality education).\n\nTo participate in the talk\, click this link to register: https://bit.ly/3zLBSMx\n\nSource: UP Department of Geography Facebook

SUMMARY:Urban Ecologies\, Sustainable Conservation & Innovative Governance in Baguio: A Forum
DESCRIPTION:The Local Regional Studies Network (LRSN) of UP CIDS and the Cordillera Studies Center\, UP Baguio are organizing a forum\, “Baguio City’s Biodiversity Greenprint: A Policy Review on Urban Ecologies for Sustainable Conservation and Innovative Governance\,” on 11 October 2024\, 8:00 am–12:00 nn\, via Zoom and the Audio Visual Room\, College of Social Sciences\, University of the Philippines Baguio. The forum is free and open to the public\, but seating is first-come\, first-served. Participants are encouraged to register.\n \nSIGN UP: YES\, I WILL ATTEND!\n\nConcept Note\n\nBaguio City\, known for its cool climate and unique biodiversity\, has long been a vital ecological zone in Northern Luzon. However\, the rapid urbanization and population growth over the last few decades have led to significant challenges to its ecological sustainability. Originally designed for a population of 25\,000–30\,000\, Baguio has surpassed this limit more than twelve times\, resulting in strain on its natural resources\, degradation of urban ecosystems\, and loss of biodiversity. The city’s expansion threatens not only its environment\, but also its potential as a model for sustainable urban living.\n\nThe Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR)\, which includes Baguio\, is home to several key biodiversity areas (KBAs) that serve as crucial ecological hotspots. Despite this\, biodiversity studies in the region are limited\, leaving significant gaps in conservation efforts and policy interventions. Without adequate biodiversity data\, informed strategies for ecological preservation and sustainable urban development remain difficult to develop.\n\nThe “Baguio Biodiversity Greenprint” project seeks to address these issues through a comprehensive policy review and stakeholder engagement to develop a blueprint for sustainable urban ecological governance. This will also serve as UP Baguio’s contribution to the 115th Baguio City Charter Anniversary celebrations.\n\nThe forum will consist of keynote speeches\, policy presentations\, and interactive discussions from key stakeholders: government officials\, environmental experts\, community leaders\, and academic representatives. This will hopefully initiate the conversation on sustainable urban ecologies and ensure a broad range of perspectives in crafting policy recommendations.\n\nForum Objectives\n\nThe forum aims to:\n\nIntroduce the Baguio Biodiversity Greenprint project and outline its objectives;\n\nExplore the impact of urbanization on Baguio’s biodiversity;\n\nSolicit feedback from stakeholders to shape policy recommendations; and\n\nPromote collaboration on innovative solutions for balancing urban development with ecological conservation.\n\nResource Speakers\n\nAttorney Rhenan G. Diwas will be sharing his expertise and plans for the city as the head of the Baguio City Environment and Parks Management Office.\n\nDr. Zenaida G. Baoanan\, Professor and UP Scientist of the University of the Philippines Baguio\, will discuss biodiversity conservation\, urban planning\, and sustainable governance.\n\nOrganizers and Queries\n\nFor queries\, please email lrsn.baguio@up.edu.ph.\n\nThis forum is organized by the Local Regional Studies Network (LRSN) of the Center for Integrative and Development Studies\, University of the Philippines\, the policy research unit\, and the Cordillera Studies Center\, University of the Philippines Baguio.\n\nLRSN is one of the Research Programs of UP CIDS\, and it currently involves\, among others\, faculty and staff of the University of the Philippines Baguio.
