SUMMARY:DSCTA Dialogues: Brown Bag Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is invited to watch and learn in the first installment of DSCTA Dialogues: Brown Bag Sessions with the topic of Youth and Politics featuring the talks of DSCTA faculty members\, Assoc. Prof. Jose Carlo de Pano and Asst. Prof. Charles Erize Ladia\, and moderated by Ms. Marielle Justine Sumilong.\n\n📅 Date: 30 September 2024\n⏰ Time: 1:00 PM [Manila Time]\n📍 Platform: via Zoom\n🔗 To register: https://forms.gle/gzQ81jvhcE7arKab8\n\n—–\n\nSocial Media\, Family\, and the Filipino Young Adults’ Political Views\nBy Assoc. Prof. Jose Carlo de Pano\n\nRecognizing the power of social media in politics and the crucial role of the family in shaping youths’ opinions about political events\, the current study explored the impacts of family conversations about political information from social media on Filipino young adults’ political views. It also examined their reasons for using social media in general and for political information\, the types of political information they got from various social media platforms\, and the ways they processed said information. There were 21 young adults aged 18 to 23 who participated in the study. The data gathered from semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions were analyzed using a qualitative content analysis\, guided by political socialization as a framework. Results showed that the participants used social media mainly for communication and interpersonal interactions\, entertainment\, information and updates\, and schoolwork. And although they were not actively looking for political information\, they were still exposed to related items on social media\, which often centered on government\, sociopolitical and socioeconomic issues\, politicians\, local and national politics\, and international relations and global politics. The participants processed political information in many ways\, including knowing more about it\, talking about it with other people\, discussing it with the family\, and avoiding online discussions on it. Although they seldom engaged in political discussions online\, they acknowledged social media as a great source of political information. The participants believed that family conversations about political information on social media were important and could impact not only their political views but even those of their family.\n\nWhich Relationships (Politically) Matter? Communicative and Relational Dimensions of Filipino Youth Political Participation\nBy Asst. Prof. Charles Erize Ladia\n\nCommunicative and relational variables remain to be salient factors and contexts in political participation research given the advent of online communication platforms and evolving sociopolitical contexts like highly polarized elections and the COVID-19 pandemic. Socializing agents like family\, peers\, school\, and the media\, and attitude towards the political system and its institutions shape political attitudes and behaviors of the younger demographic. This presentation reflects on the roles of pandemic fatigue\, political discontent\, and interpersonal (e.g.\, family socialization and social capital)\, and online (e.g.\, perceived incivility in online discourse) political socialization of Filipino university students in determining their participation in politics during the highly contested 2022 presidential elections. Pandemic fatigue and political discontent are strong predictors of online mode of engagement. Social capital strongly predicts all the three types of political participation – traditional\, interpersonal\, and online. Family socialization primarily affects interpersonal political talk while\, interestingly\, perceived incivility of social media did not influence the modes of participation. Understanding the pivotal roles of political attitudes\, relational dynamics\, and levels of political socialization on participation is essential for encouraging youth political engagement\, which has exhibited a downward trend in recent years. As the 2025 elections nears\, which political attitudes and relationships matter to/for the Filipino youth?\n\n——\n\nDSCTA Dialogues: Brown Bag Sessions is a lecture series of the UP Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts designed to provide an opportunity for its faculty members to present their ongoing research projects and creative works to the general public. Each program will highlight presenters that will talk about a specific topic within Speech Communication and Theatre Arts\, promoting interdisciplinary dialogues and fostering a deeper understanding of disciplines. These sessions aim to foster potential collaborations\, a culture of meaningful academic discourse\, and a platform for knowledge exchange.\n\nSource: UP Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts Facebook

SUMMARY:"A Depth Deficit: Rapport Building and Remote Field Instruction in University Classes during the COVID-19 Pandemic"
DESCRIPTION:Now that nearly all college instruction in the Philippines resumed the onsite modality in response to the COVID-19 educational disruption that now seems like a lifetime ago. A few reflective pieces start to trickle in to inform us in hindsight of the advantages as well as fallouts of the pandemic-induced remote learning.\n\nWhen the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020\, major transformations in the practice of field instruction in higher education institutions were instituted. For field-based academic disciplines\, remote field instruction\, in the form of virtually corresponding with community and organizational partners through calls and emails\, became an immediate alternative to fieldwork. While this has expanded the role of technology in facilitating learning\, this also posed a challenge for field-based courses that source pedagogical strength from close engagements with their intended stakeholders in physical spaces.\n\nAssistant Professor Elijah Jesse Pine is giving a talk for the Heo/Geo Lecture Series for 2024 that is happening at 5:30PM on 27 September 2024 via Zoom\, and sponsored by the Philippine Geographical Society (PGS) and the UP Department of Geography. In the talk entitled “A Depth Deficit: Rapport Building and Remote Field Instruction in University Classes during the COVID-19 Pandemic”\, EJ Pine traces the assemblages of human and non-human actants that gave rise to remote field instruction as a social phenomenon.\n\nGuided by Latour’s (2005) actor-network theory\, Asst Prof Pine observed that the nature and scope of remote field instruction positively interrogated traditionally-held assumptions about the field as a learning space. However\, it also highlighted the limited capacity of virtual spaces to create lasting interactions between students\, educators\, and stakeholders\, in turn creating a depth deficit that may impede effective field instruction. This research provides recommendations in locating a happy medium between remote and actual fieldwork in an increasingly hybrid post-pandemic society.\n\nElijah Jesse M. Pine is Assistant Professor and Chair of the Department of Educational Communication (DEC)\, College of Development Communication (CDC)\, University of the Philippines Los Baños. He obtained his BS degree in Development Communication in UPLB in 2015 and his MA degree in Anthropology in 2023. He has previously done research on educational communication\, field education\, and learning during the pandemic. In December 2023\, he co- published a monograph titled ‘Development Communication in Emergency Remote Teaching during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Challenges\, Adaptation\, and Reimagination’ along with his colleagues at DEC. His current research and public service involvements focus on developing educational media to achieve reading literacy outcomes.\n\nThe Heo/Geo Lecture Series is part of the ongoing 40th anniversary celebration of the UP Department of Geography (1983-2023) which simultaneously serves and provides a space where practical\, discursive and embodied discussions and performativities from academic geographers\, practitioners and civil society can come together and thrive. This talk is co-sponsored by the combined research groups of the UP Department of Geography: Human Geography (HuG) and Media\, Literary Geographies\, and Geohumanities (MELANGE) and in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goal #4 (Quality Education).\n\nTo participate in this lecture\, click this link: https://tinyurl.com/y4fttm7t\n\nSource: UP Department of Geography Facebook

SUMMARY:"When Lives Were as Cheap as Chickens': Dark Histories of the Barrio during the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines\, 1942-1945"
DESCRIPTION:The UP Department of History is pleased to invite everyone to the lecture of Prof. Greg Bankoff\, Ph.D. (Research Fellow\, Ateneo de Manila University) titled “When ‘Lives Were as Cheap as Chickens’: Dark Histories of the Barrio during the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines\, 1942-1945.”\n\nThe event will be held on 26 September 2024 (Thursday)\, 1:00-2:30 PM PST at Palma Hall 207\, CSSP\, UP Diliman. The event is free and open to the public. No registration is required. Walk-in participants are welcome.\n\nABSTRACT:\nThere are dark histories in every nation’s past\, stories that for one reason or another are best left out of official narratives. World War II is full of such “uncomfortable” histories. The political context in Southeast Asia\, however\, was more complicated than in Europe\, the only other major world region almost entirely under the control of an occupying power. Here collaboration involved “defecting” from one colonial power to another. In the Philippines\, there has been limited scholarship on the many individuals accused of “treason” during Japan’s occupation of that country between 1942 and 1945.\n\nOnly the activities of the national and regional elites have received serious consideration\, and only scant attention has been given to what life was like in rural areas\, to the people living in the thousands of villages or barrios across the archipelago.\n\nTheir lost stories\, however\, can still be recovered from the previously inaccessible records of the Historical Data Papers\, the village histories mandated by President Quirino in 1951. The 40\,000+ pages of this unique source offer a grassroots account of the Japanese Occupation told from the viewpoint of the barrio residents that challenges the previous wartime historiography of the islands.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER:\nGreg Bankoff is a social and environmental historian who focuses on the way societies interrelate with their environments over time\, especially the way people adapt to frequent crises and hazards in their lives. His research focuses primarily on Southeast Asia and the Pacific\, seeking to understand how societies\, both past and present\, have learnt to normalize risk and the way in which communities deal with misfortune through an interdisciplinary approach that combines archival analysis with fieldwork.\n\nHe is a Research Fellow at Ateneo de Manila University.\n\nSource: UP Departamento ng Kasaysayan Facebook page
