SUMMARY:Paper Quilling Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In Celebration of the 40th Clinical Epidemiology Anniversary in the Philippines.\n\nLearn Quilling with us! Let us roll\, shape\, and glue paper to create a unified\, decorative design. Ideal for this upcoming Christmas season\, adorn gift tags\, packages\, and cards for more personalized presents for your family and friends.\n\nQuilling is akin but different from origami. Origami folds full-paged paper\, while quilling rolls paper strips. Birds’ feathers\, or quills\, were used to coil the strips of paper. Hence\, the name quilling. Also\, it was believed that it was first seen in ancient Egypt\, where certain filigree-type art inspired modern quilling.\n\nIn this workshop\, we will be guided by Dr Carmela Marie Lapitan. A practicing urologist\, researcher\, and an administrator\, Dr Lapitan discovered quilling as a form of relaxation amidst the many demands of her various roles. She does nor claim to be an expert\, just a hobbyist\, she said. Who can better teach us who wants to discover a hobby but a hobbyist herself.\n\nJoin us as an individual at PhP1500 or bring along a friend for a fee of PhP2000.\n\nRegister now at: https://bit.ly/BS2PaperQuillingWorkshop\n\nOPEN to PUBLIC\n\nSource: University of the Philippines Manila Facebook

SUMMARY:Text Mining for Congressional Policymaking: A Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The Program on Social and Political Change (PSPC)\, UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies (UP CIDS) is organizing a Zoom webinar\, “Text Mining for Congressional Policymaking\,” on 31 August 2024\, 9:30 am to 12 noon\, Philippine Standard Time. The webinar is free and open to all\, but slots are first-come\, first-served. Participants must sign up below to receive the Zoom details.\n \nSIGN UP: YES\, I WILL ATTEND!\n\nABOUT\n\nThis public forum aims to introduce the fundamentals of text mining and text analysis\, illustrating both their methodological promises and potential pitfalls and challenges in political science research. We will present examples of successful text mining applications in understanding the dynamics of the political world and policymaking\, such as studies on US Senate press releases (Grimmer 2010) and Rodrigo Duterte’s crime rhetoric (Panao and Pernia 2022). Learn more about text-mining (concept note).\n\nSpecifically\, the forum aims to present the results of a study\, which performed text mining on press releases from the Philippine Congress since 2010 and documents accessible online from the Philippine Congress’ think tank\, the Congressional Policy and Budget Research Department (CPBRD). Using Python—a programming language suitable for machine learning—we scraped all the information from their websites. In total\, we compiled a comprehensive corpus of approximately 10\,000 documents from press releases and over 170 documents from the CPBRD. To analyze these data\, we employed the R programming language to visualize and uncover empirical patterns.\n\nIdeally\, this forum will serve both as a pedagogical tool and a valuable starting point for students and teachers to initiate their own text-as-data projects. We aim to bridge real-world data with novel quantitative techniques\, enriching participants’ methodological toolkits and inspiring innovative research approaches.\n\nPROGRAM\n\nOpening Remarks: Why Text Mining Is Important in Research and Policy Making\nRogelio Alicor Panao\, PhD\nConvenor\, Program on Social and Political Change\, UP CIDS\n\nLecture: Text-Mining Using Python and/or R\nRonald A. Pernia\, PhD\nSenior Lecturer\, National College of Public Administration and Governance (NCPAG)\nPostdoctoral Fellow\, Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD)\n\nPerspectives from the Congressional Policy and Budget Research Department\nMr. Dominador “Ringo” M. Gamboa\nService Director\, Congressional Policy and Budget Research Department\nHouse of Representatives\n\nQueries and Organizer Info\nFor queries\, please email pspc.cids@up.edu.ph\n\nThe lecture is organized by the Program on Social and Political Change (PSPC) of the UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies (CIDS)\, the university’s policy research unit. It is one of 16 Research Programs of UP CIDS.\n\nPSPC aims to develop a better understanding of past\, current\, and future social and political tensions that can arise and impact on modern Philippine society and polity.
