In this week’s webinar\, we will dive into a comprehensive understanding of OSA\, its pathophysiology\, and its implications for patient care. We will discuss the intricate mechanisms underlying this disorder\, including the collapse of upper airway structures during sleep\, resulting in recurrent apneas and hypopneas. Moreover\, we will explore the multifaceted consequences of OSA\, encompassing cardiovascular\, metabolic\, and neurocognitive impairments. Emphasis will be placed on identifying high-risk populations and implementing effective screening strategies within primary care settings.\n\nOur main presenter is Dr. Manuel Jorge II\, who is a Professor of Medicine and Physiology from the UP College of Medicine. Our reactor is Dr. Reinzi Luz Bautista\, who is a sleep specialist from the UP-PGH Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.\n\nBy the end of this webinar\, we hope participants will have gained insights on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of OSA\, conduct initial assessments\, and understand the diagnostic modalities employed in OSA\, from clinical assessment and polysomnography to emerging technologies. We will discuss treatment options\, including lifestyle modifications\, positive airway pressure therapy\, oral appliances\, and surgical interventions.\n\nLet us all work together and collaborate effectively to optimize patient care and improve overall health outcomes. SUMMARY:Abang-guard: Museum of Little Manilas
DESCRIPTION:Abang-guard: Museum of Little Manilas\nConversation and Workshop\n26 July 2024\, Friday\, 2:00 – 4:00 PM\n3/F North Wing\, UP Vargas Museum\n\nRegister to join\, bit.ly/UPVMAbangGuardJuly2024.\n\nThe UP Vargas Museum invites everyone to the conversation and workshop\, Abang-guard: Museum of Little Manilas with artists Maureen Catbagan and Jevijoe Vitug on 26 July (Friday)\, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM. The conversation and workshop are open to the public\, with limited seats and slots.\n\nAbang-guard will present “Museum of Little Manilas\,” a series of projects that combines multi-media installations\, performance\, and social practice\, alongside previous works. The project focuses on transnational place-making to commemorate and reflect on the overlooked histories of the diaspora of Filipino labor.\n\nFollowing this discussion\, there will be a workshop to pay tribute to Nena Saguil\, a Filipina artist who worked various odd jobs to pursue her artistic practice in Paris\, France in the late 1950s. Inspired by Saguil’s 1954 relief print work “Tag-Ani sa Bukid” from the Jorge B. Vargas Museum permanent art collection\, the workshop will explore gestures and movements associated with labor\, harvest\, and aspiration.\nFor inquiries\, email us at vargasmuseum@up.edu.ph.\n\n_____________________\n\nAbout the project\n\nAbang-guard is a collaboration between artists Maureen Catbagan and Jevijoe Vitug. It explores immigration\, labor\, and visibility. Reflecting on the artistic strategies of the avant-garde\, Catbagan and Vitug reframe personal history and artistic practice with intimacy\, critique\, and humor to convey the complexities and nuances between cultural production\, institutional structures\, and the deployment of labor. The collaborative project began in 2017 when they served as museum guards. Recent performances of Abang-guard were at the DUMBO Arts in 2023\, for the exhibitions “Invisible Hands” at 601 Artspace and “and in pieces…” at PS122 Gallery both in 2023 and at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Governors Island in New York both in 2022.\n\nThey received the 2024-2025 QM-Jerome Foundation for Emerging Artists for their upcoming exhibition at the Queens Museum in New York in Spring 2025.\n\nCatbagan has an MFA from the City University of New York and Vitug has an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.\n\nSource: UP Vargas Museum Facebook

CORDERO\nDirector\, Community Health and Development Program\nUniversity of the Philippines Manila\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #202\nJuly 26\, 2024 (Friday) 12nn\n“Kailan Ka Huling Nagpatingin?”\nNon-Communicable Diseases: The Silent Killer\n\nNon-communicable diseases (NCDs)\, a constellation of chronic conditions primarily attributed to lifestyle factors\, pose a formidable challenge to global health. Characterized by a protracted course and significant morbidity\, NCDs\, including cardiovascular diseases\, cancer\, chronic respiratory diseases\, and diabetes\, exert a disproportionate burden on healthcare systems\, particularly in the Western Pacific Region. To address this pressing issue\, the World Health Organization – Western Pacific Regional Office (WHO WPRO) has established a comprehensive regional action framework aimed at preventing and controlling NCDs.\n\nIn this week’s episode\, we will discuss the intricacies of the WHO WPRO NCD action framework\, providing invaluable insights for frontline healthcare providers. Our speakers will discuss the framework’s strategic objectives\, key interventions\, and best practices for implementation. We will also talk about practical strategies for integrating NCD prevention and management into primary care.\n\nOur main presenter is Dr. Eric D. Domingo\, who is currently the Coordinator for Non-Communicable Diseases at the WHO WPRO. Our reactor is Dr. Anthony G. H. Cordero\, who serves as Director of the Community Health and Development Program of UP Manila.\n\nBy the end of this webinar\, participants will gain a profound understanding of the epidemiology\, risk factors\, and clinical manifestations of NCDs. They will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to identify individuals at risk\, implement early detection and screening programs\, and deliver evidence-based care. These include the pivotal role of healthcare providers in advocating for policy changes\, fostering healthy lifestyles\, and creating supportive environments.\n\nLet us become champions of NCD prevention and management\, contributing to the collective goal of reducing the burden of these diseases and improving the health and well-being of communities across the region.\n\nSo that together\, we can stop preventable deaths.

SUMMARY:The Geopolitics of Green Colonialism: Forum & Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Program on Alternative Development of the UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies is co-organizing a forum and book launch\, “The Geopolitics of Green Colonialism: Global Justice and Ecosocial Transitions\,” on 20 July 2024\, 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm (Philippine Standard Time) at Room 7\, UP School of Economics\, UP Diliman\, Quezon City. The event is free and open to the public\, but seating is available on a first-come\, first-served basis\, but participants are encouraged to register.\n \nSIGN UP: YES\, I WILL ATTEND!\n\nAbstract\n\nThe time for denial is over. Across the Global North\, the question of how we should respond to the climate crisis has been answered—with a shift to renewables\, electric cars\, carbon trading and hydrogen. However\, beneath the sustainability branding lurks new environmental injustices and green colonialism. The green growth and clean energy plans of the Global North require the large-scale extraction of strategic minerals from the Global South. The geopolitics of transition imply sacrificing not only territories\, but truly sustainable ways of inhabiting this world. The forum aims to address the specifics of this new green colonialism and the alternatives being constructed by activists and policymakers in the Global South\, especially in Asia\, in coordination with allies in the Global North.\n\nSpeakers\n\nMary Ann Manahan is “a Filipina feminist and activist researcher\, Mary Ann Manahan is currently a doctoral assistant with the Conflict Research Group of the Department of Conflict and Development Studies at Ghent University in Belgium. Since 2020\, she has also been the co-coordinator of the Global Working Group Beyond Development. Formerly\, Manahan was a Senior Program Officer with the Asian-based Focus on the Global South NGO\, and Coordinator of the IFI Advisory Board of the US-based grassroots grant-making organisation\, Global Greengrants Fund. Her recent research focuses on the intersections of indigenous people’s struggles for self-determination\, forest conservation and alternatives to development” (Taken from Pluto Press).\n\nRachmi Hertanti “is a lawyer and has a background in International Trade Law from the Master’s School of Law at The University of Indonesia. She has been involved in several just trade policy advocacy and campaigns since 2011 with a focus on Intellectual Property Rights on seeds and medicines\, Investment treaties and corporate lawsuits\, and digital trade\, including trade-related impacts on energy and raw materials” (Taken from Transnational Institute).\n\nServing as discussant is Walden Bello\, PhD from Focus on the Global South.\n\nOrganizers\n\nFor queries\, please email: upad.cids@up.edu.ph.\n\nThe forum and book launch is co-presented by the UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies (CIDS) Program on Alternative Development (AltDev)\, Focus on the Global South – Philippines\, and the Global Working Group Beyond Development.\n\nAltDev is one of the Research Programs of CIDS\, the policy research unit of the University of the Philippines. AltDev aims to look at paradigms\, policies\, practices\, and projects that are largely marginalized and excluded from the mainstream. Visit AltDev’s page and download their publications for free. Visit the UP CIDS database and download over 900+ policy papers for free.\n\nFocus on the Global South is an activist think tank in Asia providing analysis and building alternatives for just social\, economic and political change. The Global Working Group Beyond Development is a collective of around thirty engaged researchers\, movement-based organizers\, activists and popular educators from five continents\, converging to promote systemic\, radical\, and emancipatory alternatives to the currently dominant system.

The aim of this research is to identify the factors affecting the choice of occupation of Filipino workers using regression analysis.\n\nIndividual characteristics such as gender\, age and schooling as well as regional characteristics are significant factors affecting the choice of jobs. Importantly\, educated male workers relative to educated female workers are significantly more likely to work in manufacturing\, retail and trade\, and community and social and personal services.\n\nImproved infrastructure is an important factor that could integrate more women in the labor market.\n\n[Key words: job choice\, occupation\, education\, gender\, Filipinos]\n\nSource: UP School of Economics Facebook page
