SUMMARY:The Geopolitics of Green Colonialism: Forum & Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Program on Alternative Development of the UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies is co-organizing a forum and book launch\, “The Geopolitics of Green Colonialism: Global Justice and Ecosocial Transitions\,” on 20 July 2024\, 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm (Philippine Standard Time) at Room 7\, UP School of Economics\, UP Diliman\, Quezon City. The event is free and open to the public\, but seating is available on a first-come\, first-served basis\, but participants are encouraged to register.\n \nSIGN UP: YES\, I WILL ATTEND!\n\nAbstract\n\nThe time for denial is over. Across the Global North\, the question of how we should respond to the climate crisis has been answered—with a shift to renewables\, electric cars\, carbon trading and hydrogen. However\, beneath the sustainability branding lurks new environmental injustices and green colonialism. The green growth and clean energy plans of the Global North require the large-scale extraction of strategic minerals from the Global South. The geopolitics of transition imply sacrificing not only territories\, but truly sustainable ways of inhabiting this world. The forum aims to address the specifics of this new green colonialism and the alternatives being constructed by activists and policymakers in the Global South\, especially in Asia\, in coordination with allies in the Global North.\n\nSpeakers\n\nMary Ann Manahan is “a Filipina feminist and activist researcher\, Mary Ann Manahan is currently a doctoral assistant with the Conflict Research Group of the Department of Conflict and Development Studies at Ghent University in Belgium. Since 2020\, she has also been the co-coordinator of the Global Working Group Beyond Development. Formerly\, Manahan was a Senior Program Officer with the Asian-based Focus on the Global South NGO\, and Coordinator of the IFI Advisory Board of the US-based grassroots grant-making organisation\, Global Greengrants Fund. Her recent research focuses on the intersections of indigenous people’s struggles for self-determination\, forest conservation and alternatives to development” (Taken from Pluto Press).\n\nRachmi Hertanti “is a lawyer and has a background in International Trade Law from the Master’s School of Law at The University of Indonesia. She has been involved in several just trade policy advocacy and campaigns since 2011 with a focus on Intellectual Property Rights on seeds and medicines\, Investment treaties and corporate lawsuits\, and digital trade\, including trade-related impacts on energy and raw materials” (Taken from Transnational Institute).\n\nServing as discussant is Walden Bello\, PhD from Focus on the Global South.\n\nOrganizers\n\nFor queries\, please email: upad.cids@up.edu.ph.\n\nThe forum and book launch is co-presented by the UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies (CIDS) Program on Alternative Development (AltDev)\, Focus on the Global South – Philippines\, and the Global Working Group Beyond Development.\n\nAltDev is one of the Research Programs of CIDS\, the policy research unit of the University of the Philippines. AltDev aims to look at paradigms\, policies\, practices\, and projects that are largely marginalized and excluded from the mainstream. Visit AltDev’s page and download their publications for free. Visit the UP CIDS database and download over 900+ policy papers for free.\n\nFocus on the Global South is an activist think tank in Asia providing analysis and building alternatives for just social\, economic and political change. The Global Working Group Beyond Development is a collective of around thirty engaged researchers\, movement-based organizers\, activists and popular educators from five continents\, converging to promote systemic\, radical\, and emancipatory alternatives to the currently dominant system.

SUMMARY:A Regression Analysis of Occupational Choice of Filipino Workers
DESCRIPTION:HAPPENING THIS WEEK!\n\nUPSE-PCED Seminar on “A Regression Analysis of Occupational Choice of Filipino Workers” by Professor Jonna P. Estudillo\, PhD to be held on 19 July 2024 (Friday)\, 3:00PM Manila Time via Zoom application.\n\nPlease register using the link below or by scanning the QR code.\nZoom Registration: https://bit.ly/4eZPSBZ\n\n📚ABSTRACT\nMale and female workers have different choice of jobs depending on their characteristics and role at home. The aim of this research is to identify the factors affecting the choice of occupation of Filipino workers using regression analysis.\n\nIndividual characteristics such as gender\, age and schooling as well as regional characteristics are significant factors affecting the choice of jobs. Importantly\, educated male workers relative to educated female workers are significantly more likely to work in manufacturing\, retail and trade\, and community and social and personal services.\n\nImproved infrastructure is an important factor that could integrate more women in the labor market.\n\n[Key words: job choice\, occupation\, education\, gender\, Filipinos]\n\nSource: UP School of Economics Facebook page

SUMMARY:CORDITEX Textile Talks: Collaborations in Abaca
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Cheree Quizon\nAssociate Professor of Anthropology\nSeton Hall University\, New Jersey\nJuly 17\, 2024 (Wednesday)\n10:00-11:30 AM via Zoom\n\nThe CORDITEX is very pleased to have Dr. Cheree Quizon\, textile scholar and anthropologist par excellence. Her talk will explore aspects of the cultural history of cloth made with banana fiber (Musa sp.)\, the signature thread used by Bagobo\, other Mindanao groups as well as in weavers in the Ryukyus\, Japan. Engaging in a “hyperlocal” inquiry into these breathtaking ikat-patterned textiles\, she asks what may be learned through a “material culture of proof” that looks beyond a single tradition or community by discussing two collaborations on the fiber itself on one hand\, and dyes used on the fiber\, on the other.\n\nDr. Cheree Quizon studies the knowledge systems and social formations relating to the textiles and dress of the Bagobo\, one of several indigenous peoples of the Davao region\, Mindanao\, the Philippines. She has published widely on US colonial-era museum collections examined through the lens of contemporary fieldwork in the origin community\, with comparative survey research into related traditions among Tboli in the Lake Sebu area\, Blaan in the Malungon and Matanao areas and Mandaya in the Caraga area.\n\nPrimarily interested in indigenous semantic categories of cloth and dress\, more recent publications on ethnobotany as well as ongoing interdisciplinary collaborations using isotope methods to study the dispersal of textile banana fiber continues to broaden her inquiry. She is Associate Professor of Anthropology and Chairperson of the Department of Sociology\, Anthropology and Criminal Justice at Seton Hall University in New Jersey.\n\nTo join the webinar\, click the Zoom registration below:\nhttps://up-edu.zoom.us/…/regi…/WN_TmdoMvExTr2narZZinigwg

CAROLYN R. ZALAMEDA-CASTRO\nPresident\, Philippine Society for Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy\nChair\, Task Force on Women First (Reproductive Health Committee)\, Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society\nBoard Secretary\, Society of Gynecologic Oncologists of the Philippines\, Inc.\nClinical Associate Professor\, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology\, UP – Philippine General Hospital and Medical Center Manila\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #200\nJuly 12\, 2024 (Friday) 12nn\n“BABAE\, MAHALAGA KA…”\nCervical Cancer Prevention\, Screening\, and Treatment\n\nCervical cancer remains a significant public health concern in the Philippines\, with high mortality rates despite being largely preventable. In this week’s episode\, we will discuss the recent advancements in cervical cancer prevention including the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine\, a highly effective tool in curbing the incidence of this HPV-driven malignancy. We will discuss the latest data on vaccine efficacy\, addressing questions on its ability to prevent high-risk HPV strains (HPV 16 and 18) responsible for the majority of cervical cancers.\n\nWe will explore the current availability and accessibility of the HPV vaccine in the Philippines while also addressing concerns regarding cost-effectiveness and potential barriers to widespread vaccination. Moreover\, we will aim to offer valuable insights on promoting vaccine awareness and overcoming vaccine hesitancy within the population.\n\nMoving beyond prevention\, we will also explore updates in cervical cancer screening including the latest recommendations for Pap smear screening intervals\, alongside the potential role of HPV DNA testing as a primary screening method in the Philippines. This will be a crucial discussion\, considering the World Health Organization’s recent shift towards HPV-based testing for its superior detection of precancerous lesions. Finally\, we will showcase advancements in cervical cancer treatment\, including minimally invasive surgical techniques and targeted therapies.\n\nWe have an excellent speaker this week\, Dr. Carolyn R. Zalameda-Castro\, who is the current President of the Philippine Society for Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy and also the Chair of the Task Force on Women First of the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society.\n\nBy the end of this webinar\, we hope the audience members have been updated on the critical aspects of cervical cancer prevention\, screening\, and treatment. Together\, we can make a significant impact in reducing the burden of cervical cancer in the Philippines.\n\nTogether\, we can stop preventable deaths.

SUMMARY:So Help Me\, God: Faith as a Platform for Governance Reform\, Innovation and Transformation
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Open Generation Study conducted by Barna Group reveals that 95% of the Filipino youth holds the Christian Faith dearly and sees it as a way to seek social justice. Meanwhile\, in the Bangsamoro region\, the Bangsamoro Development Plan has identified moral governance as a core standard of public service where Ibadah (worship)\, Ikhlas (sincerity)\, Hamd (praise)\, Sabr (patience)\, Taqwa (piety)\, Shura (consultation)\, Maslaha (public interest)\, and Tawakkul (reliance to God) must all come into play in rule-setting and decision-making processes.\n\nIn a country riddled with issues of extreme poverty\, corruption\, lack of job security\, and inequality\, how does faith shape the change we need? Would it be a viable catalyst for governance reform\, innovation and transformation? Is faith the missing element we have all been looking for?\n\nExplore the role of faith in governance at Better Governance Forum No. 7\, hosted by the UP-NCPAG GRIT Labs. Join us this July 10\, 2024\, at the UP-NCPAG Assembly Hall\, UP Diliman\, Quezon City as the UP-NCPAG GRIT Labs hosts Better Governance Forum No. 7 titled: “So Help Me\, God: Faith as a Platform for Governance Reform\, Innovation and Transformation.”\n\nHear from Former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno\, Founder of Bawat Isa Mahalaga\, as she shares her insights on Christian movements’ contributions to social justice. Dr. Nassef Manibalang Adiong\, Director of Policy Research and Legal Services of the Bangsamoro Parliament\, will also provide his thoughts and analysis on the impact of moral governance in Bangsamoro.\n\nDr. Alex B. Brillantes\, Jr.\, Secretary-General of the Eastern Regional Organization for Public Administration\, together with Asst. Prof. Prince Kennex R. Aldama of the Department of Social Sciences of University of the Philippines Los Baños will also join us as reactors.\n\nPre-register your onsite attendance here: bit.ly/sohelpmegodforum\n\nSource: UP Diliman National College of Public Administration and Governance Facebook page
