We will discuss the latest data on vaccine efficacy\, addressing questions on its ability to prevent high-risk HPV strains (HPV 16 and 18) responsible for the majority of cervical cancers.\n\nWe will explore the current availability and accessibility of the HPV vaccine in the Philippines while also addressing concerns regarding cost-effectiveness and potential barriers to widespread vaccination. Moreover\, we will aim to offer valuable insights on promoting vaccine awareness and overcoming vaccine hesitancy within the population.\n\nMoving beyond prevention\, we will also explore updates in cervical cancer screening including the latest recommendations for Pap smear screening intervals\, alongside the potential role of HPV DNA testing as a primary screening method in the Philippines. This will be a crucial discussion\, considering the World Health Organization’s recent shift towards HPV-based testing for its superior detection of precancerous lesions. Despite existing legislation\, a substantial portion of the population still smokes cigarettes\, and the emerging trend of vaping\, particularly among young adults\, presents a new set of challenges.\n\nIn this week’s episode\, we will emphasize the detrimental effects of cigarette smoke and vaping aerosols on the respiratory system\, looking into the pathophysiology of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)\, lung cancer\, and other tobacco-related illnesses. Our panel of experts will present successful public health initiatives and community-based programs that can be integrated into clinical practice. We will also aim to discuss the latest scientific evidence on smoking and vaping cessation medications\, including nicotine replacement therapy\, bupropion\, and varenicline\, while exploring emerging pharmacological and behavioral interventions. This talk is in partnership with the UP Office of International Linkages and the UP Diliman College of Science.\n\nDr. Deepak Jha\, a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Archaeology at the Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology\, is dedicated to studying human-environment interactions. His research specifically addresses climate change\, vegetation transition\, and the use of fire by ancient human populations. Dr. Jha employs advanced multiproxy environmental analyses\, utilizing plant lipid biomarkers\, stable isotopes\, and macroscopic charcoal particles to reveal how prehistoric humans used fire.\n\nBy reconstructing past environments using these multiple proxies\, Dr. Jha aims to shed light on how environmental changes have influenced human evolution\, subsistence strategies\, settlement patterns\, social structures\, and technological developments.
