SUMMARY:Health Updates Webinar #274 "Paano ba nahahawa sa Nipah virus?" Is it really a new threat?
DESCRIPTION:The University of the Philippines\,\nin partnership with the UP Manila – National Institutes of Health\,\nand in cooperation with UP Philippine General Hospital and UP College of Medicine\,\nwould like to invite you to attend this webinar! \n  \nRegistration slots are limited to this HEALTH UPDATES webinar\nSo sign up NOW:\nbit.ly/HealthUpdatesWebinar274 \n  \nWebinar #274\nFebruary 20\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\n“Paano Ba Nahahawa sa Nipah Virus?”\nIs It Really A New Threat?\n\nPresenter:\nDR. JOSEPH ADRIAN L. BUENSALIDO\nInfectious Diseases Specialist and Clinical Associate Professor\nDepartment of Medicine\, UP College of Medicine and\nUP – Philippine General Hospital\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #274\nFebruary 20\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\n“Paano Ba Nahahawa sa Nipah Virus?”\nIs It Really A New Threat?\n\nThe persistent emergence and sporadic re-emergence of highly pathogenic zoonotic agents necessitate a vigilant and informed healthcare frontline. Among these\, the Nipah virus (NiV)\, a member of the genus Henipavirus\, stands as a significant public health priority due to its high case fatality rate\, which historically ranges from 40% to 75%\, and its potential for nosocomial transmission. As we navigate the early months of 2026\, recent clusters in South Asia\, including newly identified cases among healthcare professionals in West Bengal\, underscore the critical importance of diagnostic alacrity and stringent infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols.\n\nThe clinical spectrum of Nipah virus infection is notoriously protean\, often beginning with non-specific prodromal symptoms that mimic more common respiratory or febrile illnesses. Early detection remains a significant challenge\, yet it is the cornerstone of preventing community and facility-based outbreaks. In this week’s episode\, we will explore the nuances of the acute phase\, characterized by high-grade fever\, myalgia\, and respiratory distress\, while paying particular attention to the rapid progression toward neurologic involvement. We will discuss the pathophysiology of acute encephalitis\, marked by altered consciousness\, autonomic instability\, and segmental myoclonus\, which can lead to a comatose state within 24 to 48 hours of onset. In addition\, we will address the phenomenon of “latent” or “relapsed” encephalitis\, where survivors present with neurological deficits months or even years post-exposure\, emphasizing the need for long-term clinical vigilance.\n\nIn the absence of licensed vaccines or targeted antivirals\, the focus remains on rigorous supportive care and the immediate implementation of Risk Group 4 biosafety standards. We will review the essential role of specialized personal protective equipment\, the necessity of fit-tested N95 or P100 respirators\, and the specific laboratory protocols required for the safe handling of viremic specimens. Our main discussant is Dr. Joseph Adrian L. Buensalido\, an infectious diseases specialist and a Clinical Associate Professor from the UP-PGH Department of Medicine.\n\nJoin us in learning how we can protect ourselves against the spread of Nipah virus!

SUMMARY:The Politics of the Minimum Wage in the Global South
DESCRIPTION:The Politics of the Minimum Wage in the Global South\n\nPresented by:\nTeri L. Caraway\nBenjamin E. Lippincott Professor of Political Economy\nDepartment of Political Science\nUniversity of Minnesota\, Twin Cities\n\nas part of the15th Research Dissemination Forum of the\nUP School of Labor and Industrial Relations\nCenter for Labor Justice\n\n16 February 2026 2:00 – 5:00 PM\nUP SOLAIR Mini Auditorium\n(F2F session is invite-only\, other interested participants register via Zoom: https://bit.ly/4kvY3JE)\n\nAbstract: Minimum wages increased dramatically in all regions of the Global South during the first two decades of the 21 st century. We highlight the role of minimum wage setting institutions in creating political logics that help to explain why workers have made huge gains on this issue. Unlike many issues of concern to workers\, the executive branch has the final authority to raise minimum wages in most of the Global South.\n\nBecause executives can raise minimum wages without taking legislative action\, they can manipulate them on relatively short notice in response to political circumstances. We highlight two political pressures—elections and labor mobilization—that lead governments in democracies and competitive autocracies to raise minimum wages.\n\nUsing two original cross-national data sets on minimum wages and labor mobilization\, we test these arguments quantitatively and find strong evidence that elections and labor mobilization are associated with large minimum wage increases. We also present four brief case studies of Cambodia\, Indonesia\, Thailand\, and Turkey\, that illustrate the theorized dynamics qualitatively.\n\nTeri L. Caraway is Benjamin E. Lippincott Professor of Political Economy in the Department of Political Science at the University of Minnesota\, Twin Cities. Her research specialization is the comparative political economy of labor with a focus on the Global South and Southeast Asia. Her most recent books are Organized Labor in Southeast Asia (Cambridge University Press\, 2023) and Labor and Politics in Indonesia (Cambridge University Press\, 2020).\n\nProfessor Caraway’s current research examines the politics of the minimum wage globally\, the impact of democratic backsliding on labor movements in Southeast Asia\, and the political economy of critical minerals in the Global South\, with a focus on the nickel industry in Indonesia.\n\nSource: UP School of Labor and Industrial Relations Facebook

TERESITA JOY P. EVANGELISTA\nProfessor\nDepartment of Physiology\, UP College of Medicine\nDepartment of Rehabilitation Medicine\, UP – Philippine General Hospital\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #273\nFebruary 13\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\n“Bakit Masakit Ang Tuhod Ko?”\nOsteoporosis Treatment Options\n\nIn the evolving landscape of geriatric care and metabolic bone health\, the clinical management of osteoporosis has transitioned from a reactive paradigm to a sophisticated\, multidisciplinary strategy focused on proactive fracture prevention and functional optimization. In this week’s episode\, we will discuss the complexities of bone density restoration and musculoskeletal resilience. We will discuss how to bridge the gap between pharmacological intervention and the biomechanical realities of patient mobility.\n\nAs the global population ages\, the prevalence of skeletal fragility necessitates a deeper understanding of the bone remodeling cycle\, specifically the delicate equilibrium between osteoclast-mediated resorption and osteoblast-driven formation. While conventional wisdom often limits the conversation to calcium supplementation and basic screening\, we will talk about the nuances of advanced pharmacotherapy\, including the strategic application of antiresorptive agents and anabolic bone-building medications. We will discuss how a physiatrist’s perspective enhances the standard of care by integrating individualized exercise prescriptions designed to improve postural stability and mitigate the risk of debilitating falls.\n\nOur main discussant is Dr. Teresita Joy P. Evangelista\, a renowned professor from the Department of Physiology at the UP College of Medicine and Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the UP – Philippine General Hospital. Join us for another learning-filled episode on how to effectively reduce the incidence of fragility fractures and enhance the overall quality of life for our patient populations.\n\nTogether\, let us update ourselves on health and medicine!
