SUMMARY:44th Gabriel A. Bernardo Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to the 44th Gabriel A. Bernardo Memorial Lecture with Dr. Michelle Caswell\, Professor of Archival Studies in the Department of Information Studies at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).\n\nThis year’s GAB lecture is entitled “Archives\, Communities\, and Liberatory Memory Work” and will be held on March 22 (Friday)\, 9:00 – 11:30 AM\, at the UP SOLAIR Auditorium in UP Diliman. The lecture is free and open to all.\n\nYou can register for the lecture at https://buytickets.at/upslis/1143518\n\nThis lecture is made possible with support from the World Expert Lecture Series (WELS) of the UP Office of International Linkages.\n\n— Lecture Abstract —\n\nThe past decade of archival studies has seen an explosion of interest in community-based archives. This presentation will explain a U.S. perspective on community archives\, including basic definitions\, motivations for their creation\, and their activation through use by artists and activists. Issues of identity\, representation\, and power remain central to community archives as do activist concerns for material reparations for past and ongoing injustices. The talk will conclude with some thoughts on the potential for community archives to embody liberatory memory work\, as well as some ethical considerations for doing academic research on community archives.\n\nSource: UPSLIS Facebook

SUMMARY:Writing and Speaking Out of Turn: Where to\, Art Studies?
DESCRIPTION:In the 1990s the faculty of the Department of Art Studies cobbled together a makeshift publication called the Art Studies Journal (ASJ). We wrote and contributed our essays\, not because we have something to say with much certainty but to question those very certainties – to go against the grain\, to write and speak out of turn\, as we considered our positions as educators and scholars amidst the urgencies of the times. With the first volume published in 1992 and the latest issue in 1994\, the journal has had an almost three decade hiatus.\n\nToday\, the ASJ returns with the same reflexive questioning that animated the first volumes\, but this time with a new set of challenges. What does it mean to write and speak out of turn in an increasingly market-driven and ranking obsessed academic environment? What do we do when we do art studies in our everyday lives amidst pressures to conform to the demands of an increasingly corporatized and managerial ecology of higher education?\n\nAs we welcome the revival of the Art Studies Journal with such unsettling thoughts\, we invite you to join us for an intimate and provocative conversation with members of the faculty from the Department of Art Studies\, who will reflect upon the publication’s and the Department’s past\, present\, and future directions.\n\nThe relaunch and public forum titled “Writing and Speaking Out of Turn: Where to\, Art Studies?” will be held on 21 March at 1:00 PM at the 1/F Lobby of the Jorge B. Vargas Museum.\n\nFor more information on the journal\, please visit: artstudiesjournal.upd.edu.ph.\n\nKindly register through: https://forms.gle/d5xipSL8kUMnZxmu5

SUMMARY:SLIS Lecture Series: “Unprude and Empowered: Embracing Our Sexual Selves”
DESCRIPTION:Along with the UP Diliman community\, the School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) is pleased to announce our commemoration of Women’s Month this March 2024. The theme of this year’s celebration in UP Diliman is: “Babae\, Tuloy ang Arangkada! I-Phase-out ang Pahirap sa Masa”.\n\nIn honor of this\, the SLIS will be hosting a lecture entitled: “Unprude and Empowered: Embracing Our Sexual Selves”. Renowned sex therapist Dr. Rica Cruz\, the visionary behind Unprude\, will be our resource speaker for this event.\n\nSexual health literacy highlights the importance of making informed choices regarding individuals’ ability to obtain\, evaluate\, and utilize sexual health information (Maasoumi et al.\, 2023). It enables individuals to exert their autonomy and take charge of their bodies\, particularly in relation to sexual practices and other related concerns\, while also confronting the stigma commonly linked to it. To promote this\, it is necessary to encourage open discussions on sexual health and sex education. This lecture contributes to this and attempts to address important problems and concerns related to sexuality\, with the aim of increasing knowledge and understanding of sexual health in the community.\n\nThe lecture will be on March 20\, 2024 (Wednesday) at 2:00 PM. It will be held at Room 10 of UP SOLAIR (Bonifacio Hall\, UP Diliman\, Quezon City). The event is open and free to all but Interested participants must register through this link: https://tinyurl.com/unprude2024\n\nFor any inquiries\, feel free to reach out to Asst. Prof. Yhna Therese Santos at yhna@slis.upd.edu.ph.\n\nReference:\nMaasoumi\, R.\, Jamali\, B.\, Zarei\, F. et al.
