SUMMARY:The Practice is the Research: Creative Writing and the Symposium-led Model at RMIT University\, Australia
DESCRIPTION:The Department of English and Comparative invites everyone to the lecture “The practice is the research: Creative Writing and the symposium-led model at RMIT University\, Australia\,” by the esteemed writer Michelle Aung Thin on February 19\, 1PM-3PM\, at PAV 1214.\n\nRMIT’s Practice Research Symposium (PRS) is a PhD program for established and mid-career writers that runs in the Asia-Pacific and in Melbourne\, Australia. This talk will discuss the innovative approach this transcultural\, multi-disciplinary\, low-residency program takes to creative writing research. What does practice-led creative writing research look like at the advanced\, PhD level? How can a writer deepen their understanding of their practice to make shifts in their work and transform their practice? What kind of contributions to knowledge ensue? And finally\, what differences have manifested themselves between the PRS program in Asia compared with the newer offering in Melbourne?\n\nMichelle Aung Thin is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Media & Communication at RMIT. Born in Rangoon\, Burma\, she grew up in Ottawa\, Canada and currently lives in Melbourne\, Australia. Her research encompasses cross-cultural identities and the ethics of the intercultural encounter.\n\nHer first book\, “The Monsoon Bride\,” is about mixed-race identity in colonial Rangoon and was shortlisted for the Victorian Premier Literary awards\, unpublished manuscript. Her second\, “Hasina\,” examines the Rohingya genocide and was published as “Crossing the Farak River” in Canada and the USA where it won several awards\, including USSBY outstanding International Book for 2021. Michelle is currently working on a book about cosmopolitan Rangoon on the eve of the Second World War.\n\nSource: UPD Department of English and Comparative Literature Facebook

D.\nGeoscientist\nBobis Geoconsulting\n\nAbstract\n\nPorphyry copper deposits are the most important source for copper\, contributing more than 60% of the annual world copper production and around 65% of the known total copper resource. A spectrum of deposit-scale geologic\, geochemical-geophysical and geometric features and factors influence the size and/or grade of porphyry copper deposits. These characteristics\, often occurring as clustered or aligned intrusion centres with affiliated hydrothermal breccias\, polymetallic veins\, hypogene upgrading-supergene enrichment have evolved in several ways\, largely driven by the objective of finding more productive porphyry copper centres.\n\nI synthesise here the alteration-mineralisation characteristics of a porphyry copper column and thence present scenarios on how these features/factors are applied in the exploration of porphyry copper centres.\n\nSource: National Institute of Geological Sciences Facebook

SUMMARY:What Can Historical Linguists Learn From Archaeologists?: Some Reflections From Teaching Lingg 150
DESCRIPTION:bilang belemtayms naman next week\, let s have a talk about something we love- conversations and interdisciplinarity.\non Valentines day\, Vincci Santiago will present ‘What Can Historical Linguists Learn from Archaeologists?: Some Reflections from Teaching Lingg 150’.\n\nsave the date (and bring one too): Wednesday\, 14th February 2024\, 12pm-1pm at Albert Hall Seminar Room 2.\nwant to invite a friend who is not on fb? send them this link instead: https://archaeology.upd.edu.ph/…/binalot-talks-what-can…\n\nAbstract\n\nIn the semesters I was assigned to teach the undergraduate course Linggwistiks 150 – Ang Familya ng mga Wikang Ostronesya [The Austronesian Language Family]\, I have repeatedly caught myself asking\, “What do the archaeologists\, anthropologists\, and geneticists think about this?” or “Are there recent findings outside our home discipline that will support or corroborate this migration pattern or language distribution?”.\n\nIt is in the spirit of interdisciplinarity and dialogue that I take stock of some of these lingering issues from our side of the fence. Were the Pre-Austronesian populations really mostly foragers and hunter-gatherers? Did Austronesian language speakers migrate one fell swoop into the Philippine archipelago? What motivated these communities to migrate in the first place? Is there archaeological evidence for later migrations and back-migrations such as those of the Greater Central Philippine language communities? Perhaps some of these questions are already “case closed” for archaeology. Others might remain unanswered or unexplored. What do we do when our respective discoveries yield discordant narratives?\n\nyou may bring your lunch and eat during the talk.\n\nPS. on coffee: we encourage bringing of own cups/tumblers to lessen use of disposables.\n\nSource: Binalot Talks Facebook group
