SUMMARY:Mga Tugtugin ng Paglaya sa Araw ng Kalayaan
DESCRIPTION:Written by UP Media and Public Relations Office \nThe UP Symphony Orchestra during rehearsals at the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) in Taiwan. Photo by the UPSO.\nThis June 12\, the Philippines marks the 125th anniversary of its independence. It is an occasion that calls for jubilation as we celebrate not only freedom but what it means to be a Filipino.\n\nThe University of the Philippines Symphony Orchestra (UPSO) and the UP College of Music will mount “Mga Tugtugin ng Paglaya” on June 10\, 2023\, 6:00 PM\, at the UP Theater as an early Independence Day concert. The works to be featured include Lucio San Pedro’s Alamat ng Lahi and Kayumangging Malaya\, Nicanor Abelardo’s piano concerto\, Ryan Cayabyab’s Mi Ultimo Adios\, and more.\n\nThe UPSO will be joined by two faculty members of the UP College of Music: pianist Clement Acevedo\, and baritone Raymond Leslie Diaz.\n\nThis one-of-a-kind concert also marks the launch of the 60-piece UPSO Chorus made up of choristers from various colleges\, institutions\, and campuses of UP. The chorus will be led by chorus director Noemi Binag. \nFrom left: Prof. Clement Acevedo\, pianist; Dr. Raymond Leslie Diaz\, baritone; and Ms. Noemi Binag\, chorus director of the soon-to-be-launched UPSO Chorus.\nEstablished by the UP Board of Regents during its 1337th meeting on August 30\, 2018\, the UPSO serves as the official system-wide orchestra of the University of the Philippines\, supported by the UP System Fund and hosted by the UP College of Music. Known fondly as “Ang Orkestra ng Bayan”\, the UPSO serves as a repertory orchestra for musicians\, a laboratory orchestra for Filipino composers\, and a training orchestra for young conductors.\n\nUnder the direction of Maestro Josefino “Chino” Toledo\, the orchestra maintains a roster of 65 members exclusively from within the UP community\, including alumni\, students\, faculty\, and staff\, from all UP campuses. It is the only orchestra in the country that regularly performs Filipino\, Asian\, contemporary\, and new works in addition to the standard orchestra repertoire.\n\nMga Tugtugin ng Paglaya” is FREE and open to the public. For crowd control purposes\, please register in advance at https://forms.gle/NuhiNgHeaepaeG3W8.\n\nLearn more about the concert and the works to be performed on UPSO’s Facebook page and Instagram account.\n\n\n\nSource: https://up.edu.ph/mga-tugtugin-ng-paglaya-sa-araw-ng-kalayaan/

Aside from having to familiarize oneself with a new set of words\, one would have to adjust to such things as understanding and knowing the parts of a document during a certain period\, old handwriting\, unfamiliar abbreviations\, misspelled words\, ink blotches\, and torn pages.\n\nUsing tools such as paleography to identify terminologies\, abbreviations\, and writing styles that will be used throughout the Hispanic world from the 16th until the 19th century\, researchers are faced with the primary problem of knowing to read\, write\, and understand Spanish especially as there is no specific and unified form of writing. The objective of this presentation is to explain the background of old Spanish records and to aid potential researchers interested in this particular period of the country’s history with an opportunity to extract vital information from these records.\n\nThis lecture will be held online on 09 June 2023 at 14.00 UTC+8. The event is free and open to all\, however pre-registration is required to manage the capacity of the Zoom meeting. Register to the event at https://bit.ly/IAW2023UPSLIS\n\n𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿\n\nDr. Francis M. Navarro is a graduate of the University of the Philippines at Diliman where he took his Bachelor of Arts degree in History. He pursued higher studies at the Universidad de Salamanca as a scholar of the Spanish government where he took his Doctorate in Archival Studies and Documentation. Aside from being an Assistant Professor of History at the Ateneo de Manila University\, he is also the Director of the University Archives which includes the Archives of the Manila Observatory and the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus. He also gives classes at the Loyola School of Theology where he teaches Church History. In 2018\, he was awarded by San Beda College\, where he finished his elementary and high school education\, as the Most Outstanding Bedan in the field of Arts and Culture. His most recent role was being a part of a government panel to study and investigate the First Easter Mass Celebration in the Philippines celebrated in 1521.\n\n𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸\n\nThis lecture is organized by the University of the Philippines School of Library and Information Studies (UPSLIS) in celebration of International Archives Week 2023. #IAW2023 celebrates diversity and collaboration of archives around the globe with the theme #ArchivesUnited. This year’s celebration is particularly auspicious as 2023 marks the 75th Anniversary of the International Council on Archives. The ICA was created under the auspices of UNESCO on the 9th of June 1948 to “to promote the management and use of records and archives\, and the preservation of the archival heritage of humanity around the world\, through the sharing of experiences\, research and ideas on professional archival and records management matters\, and on the management and organisation of archival institutions.” (International Council on Archives)\n\nUPSLIS is an institutional member of the ICA and proudly offers the first Master in Archives and Records Management in the SEA region. As the Philippines continues to embrace technological advancements in medicine\, this webinar aims to shed light on the applications\, benefits\, and future prospects of robotic surgery in the country.\n\nThe Philippine General Hospital is one of the hospitals in the country that uses “robotic surgery”\, also called robot-assisted surgery. It is a type of surgery that allows many types of complex procedures with more precision\, flexibility and control than is possible with conventional techniques. Robotic surgery is often associated with minimally invasive surgery — procedures performed through tiny incisions for faster healing.\n\nIn robotic surgery\, the robot does not “think” on its own. The surgeon controls the arms while seated at a computer console near the operating table. The console gives the surgeon a high-definition\, magnified\, 3-D view of the surgical site. The surgeon leads other team members who assist during the operation. To operate using the Robotic system\, the surgeon makes tiny incisions in your body and inserts miniaturized instruments and a high-definition three-dimensional camera\, and sometimes\, skin incisions are not required at all.\n\nIn this webinar\, renowned experts in robotic surgery will share their valuable insights\, experiences\, and clinical outcomes achieved through robotic-assisted procedures. The speakers will discuss the various subspecialties where robotic surgery has made significant strides\, including urology\, general surgery\, etc. In addition\, the webinar will delve into the advantages of robotic surgery\, focusing on the benefits for patients\, surgeons\, and healthcare institutions. The speakers will highlight the improved precision\, reduced blood loss\, shorter hospital stays\, and faster recovery times associated with robotic-assisted procedures. They will also address the economic implications of adopting robotic surgery\, including cost-effectiveness analyses and potential long-term savings.\n\nTo learn more about robotic surgery\, along with its many uses\, benefits and risks\, join us and the PGH Department of Surgery in this STOP COVID DEATHS webinar with Dr. Nikko J. Magsanoc\, who is the Chair of Robotic Surgery; Dr. Sylvia Karina L. Alip\, who is the Robotic Surgery Coordinator; Dr. Dennis P. Serrano\, who previously served as Chief of two divisions (Division of Urology and Division of Transplant Surgery); and Dr. Hermogenes J. Monroy III\, who is the former chief of the Division of Colorectal Surgery. The Opening Remarks will be given by PGH Director Gap Legaspi while the Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by the Head of the PGH Office of Expanded Education and Training\, Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose.\n\nUltimately\, this webinar aims to ignite a stimulating discussion\, foster collaboration\, and inspire healthcare professionals in the Philippines to embrace the transformative power of robotic surgery. Together\, we can forge a path towards enhanced patient outcomes\, improved surgical techniques\, and a brighter future for surgical care in the Philippines.\n\nTogether\, we can STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS!
