STELLA MARIE L. JOSE\nHead\, Office of Expanded Education and Training\nUP Philippine General Hospital\n\n———————————————————–\n\nMarch 31\, 2023 (Friday) 12nn\nWebinar #140\n“Poison Alert: Paanong Umiwas sa Lason?”\n\nAs of 2023\, the World Health Organization reports that only about half of all countries have a poison center.\n\nPoison centers are sources of expertise on the diagnosis and management of poisoning. Most centers provide emergency advice to the general public as well as to health professionals.\n\nThe Philippines is fortunate to have had a center since the 1970’s spearheaded by an esteemed pharmacologist\, Professor Emeritus Nelia Cortes-Maramba. The National Poison Management and Control Center (NPMCC) of the UP Philippine General Hospital was established in 1975 when the science of toxicology was introduced in the country. This was in response to the increasing incidence of poisoning brought about by indiscriminate use of pesticides. Activities of the NPMCC have focused on the management of acute poisoning cases and research. The center is the source of training for doctors\, nurses and other health professionals.\n\nOver time\, the types of poisonings encountered have changed from ingestion of anti-tuberculosis medications to a recent surge in abuse of antipyretics that can be bought over the counter. Alcohol intoxication and poisoning from lambanog has been reported. Poisoning from the use of disinfectants was reported during the pandemic. Snakebites and reactions to naturally-occurring poisons like calcium oxalates in certain household plants like the dieffenbachia plant (more commonly known as “dumb cane” or “leopard’s lily”) have been encountered\, among many other different types of exposures to poison. Emerging concerns about oil spills\, red tide/algae blooms\, as well as chemical\, biological\, radiation and nuclear exposures (CBRNE) linked to global security make the role of the center critical.\n\nIn this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS\, we will take a closer look at the NPMCC\, the leading causes of poisoning\, and basic information to help front liners on how to suspect\, diagnose\, and refer cases of poisoning. The main speaker is Dr. Nelia P. Cortes-Maramba\, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology\, UP College of Medicine and is widely regarded as the Mother of Philippine Toxicology as she pioneered the science and practice of toxicology in the country. The reactors are Dr. Lynn Crisanta R. Panganiban\, who is the former Head of the NPMCC and who will be talking about toxicovigilance and poison information service; Dr. Irma R. Makalinao\, who is the former Training Officer of NPMCC and an international expert on CBRNE and will discuss the NPMCC training program and chemical emergencies among others; and Dr. Nerissa M. Dando\, who is the current Head of the NPMCC and will talk about NPMCC case statistics and ongoing initiatives.\n\nJoin your credible on-line community and learn more about poisons\, diagnosis and management. Together\, we can STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS!
