SUMMARY:"Our Daily Fish": Fisheries in the Philippines—Past\, Present\, and Future
DESCRIPTION:“Our Daily Fish”: Fisheries in the Philippines—Past\, Present\, and Future | Kapehan talks organized by the Office of Research\n\nIn “Ode to the Sea\,” poet Pablo Neruda entreats\, “Oh\, Sea . . . Give us this day / our daily fish.” The sentiment holds true for us Filipinos who live in an archipelagic environment and rely on fisheries for our sustenance and livelihoods. Spanning from the American colonial period until the present\, our three speakers will tell the fascinating story of how the heart of marine fish biodiversity in the Philippines has shifted over the years due to various anthropogenic factors such as overfishing and habitat destruction—weaving their discoveries\, gathered using various techniques in species identification and mapping\, into a grand tapestry that shows our past and present and inform our future.\n\nTHIS LIVE EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.\nREGISTER ONLINE: https://forms.gle/vZf7QbszLGPGFjgX7\nCREDITS: Fish illustrations: CJ Salazar; Wave pattern: www.freepik.com\n\nSource: UPMin Office of Research Facebook

SUMMARY:Stop COVID Deaths Webinar #135 “NAKAKAMATAY BA ANG DENGUE? Update on Clinical Management of Dengue”
DESCRIPTION:The University of the Philippines in partnership with\nUP Manila NIH National Telehealth Center and in cooperation with\nUP Philippine General Hospital\nwould like to invite you to join the Fight Against COVID-19! \n  \nRegistration slots are limited to this SPECIAL EDITION of\nthe STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS Webinar Series.\n(Current COVID-19 problems; Other outbreaks; Viruses; Infections; Disasters)\nSo sign up NOW:\nbit.ly/StopCOVIDDeathsWebinar135 \n  \nWebinar #135\nFebruary 24\, 2023 (Friday) 12nn\n“NAKAKAMATAY BA ANG DENGUE?\nUpdate on Clinical Management of Dengue”\n\nPresenter:\nDR. RONTGENE SOLANTE\nChairman\nAdult Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine\nSan Lazaro Hospital\n\nReactor:\nDR. ALBERT DOMINGO\nDirector III\nQuality Assurance Group\nPhilippine Health Insurance Corporation\n\n———————————————————–\n\nFebruary 24\, 2023 (Friday) 12nn\nWebinar #135\n“NAKAMAMATAY BA ANG DENGUE?\nUpdate on Clinical Management of Dengue\n\nFor several months now\, sporadic increases in dengue cases in the community\, as well as hospitalizations\, have been reported in the news. The Philippines is one of 100 countries where dengue is endemic. Dengue is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. The primary vectors that transmit the disease are Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and to a lesser extent\, Aedes albopictus mosquitoes.\n\nThe global incidence of dengue has grown dramatically with about half of the world’s population now at risk. Dengue incidence has increased 30-fold in the last 50 years\, with geographic expansion to new countries and\, more recently\, from urban to rural settings. Although an estimated 100-400 million infections occur each year\, over 80% are generally mild and asymptomatic.\n\nFor the 20% that may develop into severe dengue\, meticulous and diligent management of dengue is of critical importance in the first few days of the disease. However referrals are done late and if the warning signs of severe dengue are not identified immediately\, the risk of death is high. Severe dengue is a leading cause of serious illness and death\, particularly in younger age groups. Theoretically with proper medical care\, the case fatality rate (CFR) of severe dengue should not be more than 1.0 (or 10% of cases). A few years back\, case fatality was reported at 1.3 (or 13%) prompting further investigation by infectious disease specialists in the country.\n\nThere is no specific treatment for dengue but if diagnosed early and managed properly\, dengue need not result in death. What are the latest updates on clinical management and early diagnosis? What is needed to survive an outbreak of dengue?\n\nIn this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS\, the main presenter is Dr. Rontgene Solante\, Chairman of the Adult Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at San Lazaro Hospital\, who will present information on clinical management in the Philippine setting. Looking at the health financing angle\, Dr. Albert Domingo\, Director III of the Quality Assurance Group of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) will talk about the case rates for dengue under the National Health Insurance Program.\n\nJoin your credible on-line community in learning the latest updates on the clinical management of dengue. Together we can Stop C.O.V.I.D. Deaths!\n\n# # #
