SUMMARY:Stop COVID Deaths Webinar #131 “UPDATES ON THE OMICRON SUBVARIANT XBB 1.5 (KRAKEN)”
DESCRIPTION:The University of the Philippines in partnership with\nUP Manila NIH National Telehealth Center and in cooperation with\nUP Philippine General Hospital\nwould like to invite you to join the Fight Against COVID-19! \n  \nRegistration slots are limited to this SPECIAL EDITION of\nthe STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS Webinar Series.\n(Current COVID-19 problems; Other outbreaks; Viruses; Infections; Disasters)\nSo sign up NOW:\nbit.ly/StopCOVIDDeathsWebinar131 \n\nWebinar #131\nJanuary 27\, 2023 (Friday) 12nn\n“UPDATES ON THE OMICRON SUBVARIANT XBB 1.5 (KRAKEN)”\n\nPresenters:\nDR. FRANCO B. FELIZARTA\nInfectious Disease Specialist\nUPMASA Member\n\nDR. CYNTHIA P. SALOMA\nExecutive Director\nPhilippine Genome Center\n\nSynthesis and Closing Remarks:\nDr. Carmencita D. Padilla\nChancellor\nUniversity of the Philippines Manila\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #131\nJanuary 27\, 2023\nUpdates on the OMICRON Subvariant XBB 1.5 (Kraken)\n\nIn the news\, a new COVID-19 Omicron subvariant XBB 1.5 has been reported to be rapidly spreading around the world and possibly becoming the dominant strain in the United States. Nicknamed ‘Kraken’ – after a terrifying multi-tentacled mythical sea monster – by someone who wanted the variant to be easily remembered — compared to letters and numbers. This went viral hence the street nickname. But can ‘street names’ incite panic and undue fear?\n\nXBB 1.5 is a descendant of the variant XBB that swept Singapore. The World Health Organization claims that it is the most transmissible variant of Omicron so far. There is no evidence that it causes more severe disease. Are the vaccines effective? Are the signs and symptoms different? What are effective treatments and are these available in the Philippines?\n\nIn this week’s episode of STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS\, we take a closer look at Omicron subvariant XBB 1.5 with infectious disease expert Dr. Franco B. Felizarta and Philippine Genome Center Executive Director\, Dr. Cynthia P. Saloma. Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by UP Manila Chancellor\, Dr. Carmencita D. Padilla.\n\nWe will sort out the facts and discuss what our frontliners need to know about this new strain.\n\nJoin your credible on-line community and stay updated.\n\nTogether\, we can Stop C.O.V.I.D. Deaths!

SUMMARY:FOREIGN INFLUENCE ON THE TAGALOG DEGREE SYSTEM
DESCRIPTION:Linguistics Special Lecture Series 2023 No.1\npresented in cooperation with UP Departamento ng Filipino at Panitikan ng Pilipinas\n\nEkaterina Baklanova\, PhD\nSenior Research Fellow\nInstitute of Asian and African Studies\nLomonosov Moscow State University\n\n27 January 2023 | Friday | 11:00 AM Philippine Time (UTC+08:00)\nIn-person & Livestreaming\n\nCAL AVR PH 1131\nLIMITED SLOTS\nRegister at: https://bit.ly/LSLS2Reg\n\nThe lecture will be livestreamed on\nhttps://www.facebook.com/UPLinguistics\nhttps://www.facebook.com/dfpp.cal.upd\nhttp://bit.ly/UPLinguisticsYT\n\nABSTRACT\nThe impact of an intense Spanish influence on Tagalog from 16th to the early 20th century is manifested not only in the Tagalog lexica but also in its grammar. The Tagalog system of adjectival degrees in particular has expanded due to the Spanish borrowings as well as some recent English loanwords which leads to a partial restructuring of the degree paradigms.\n\nA number of well-known works on the grammar of Tagalog (Schachter&Otanes 1972; De Guzman 1996; Malicsi 2013; Cena 2014) show differences both in approaches to characterizing the degree paradigm of Tagalog adjectives and in the scope of its inventory. Following the approach by Igor Melchuk (1998) I have attempted to describe this system as consisting of the adjectival paradigms of intensity category and comparison category. The impact of Spanish and English borrowings in these two paradigms has been analyzed based on the Leipzig Corpus of Tagalog (2017) ang a range of publications. It will be shown that the inventory of the intensity paradigm of Tagalog has been enriched with a Spanish-derived Moderative Marker as well as two Spanish and two English-derived Elative Markers. In the comparison paradigm which includes Comparative\, Superlative\, Equative\, and hypothetically also an “Inferior” degree forms\, Spanish Comparative marker mas prevails\, while pareho/parehas has been adopted as another Equative degree marker. Along with the native Relator sa\, two borrowed Relators kaysa and kumpara sa are part of the Tagalog comparison inventory. Finally\, it is suggested that the use of mas as a double-marker in comparison of inequality may indicate a tendency to grammaticalization of mas towards a general “comparison of inequality” marker.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nDr. Ekaterina Baklanova is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Asian and African Studies of Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russia)\, where she also obtained her PhD in 2010. Her major scholarly interests concern Tagalog linguistics\, particularly language contact\, contact-induced changes and morphology. Her research activities also include History of the Philippine Literature\, Contemporary Philippine Literature and Malay Linguistics. Ekaterina Baklanova currently teaches Tagalog/Filipino Language\, Philippine Literature and Linguistics at the IAAS of Lomonosov Moscow State University. She has publications in various journals and collections about borrowing and contact-induced change in Tagalog and some of its grammatical features\, as well as about the Philippine literature and culture.\n\nSource: UP Department of Linguistics Facebook

Since then\, UPPC has become an avenue for artists and art enthusiasts alike devoted to enhancing their skills and talents in the field of visual arts.\n\nLabing-Isang Daliri 2023 is not merely an art exhibit\, but also a celebration of artistry from different generations and academic fields. It is an event that serves as a reminder to everyone\, artists and art enthusiasts of different backgrounds\, that there is a space for us\, and for the artworks that we make or we will make with our hands and our chosen eleventh finger.\n\nSource: UPLB Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts Facebook

SUMMARY:Pagsalud han Dan-ag han Adlaw / Cupping the Flow of Sunlight (Gleanings from the Natural and Cultural Heritage of Eastern Visayas)
DESCRIPTION:Pagsalud han Dan-ag han Adlaw / Cupping the Flow of Sunlight (Gleanings from the Natural and Cultural Heritage of Eastern Visayas)\n\nAll are invited to visit UP Tacloban’s 50th anniversary exhibit at the Robinson’s North Activity Center during mall hours on 23-24 January 2023.\n\nThe interactive educational exhibit is the kickoff activity for UP Tacloban’s year-long celebration of its 50th founding anniversary. The exhibit features paintings\, photographs\, specimens\, maps\, and multimedia productions drawn from some of the research and creative work undertaken by UP Tacloban scholars\, as well as a full-sized replica of the UP Oblation by UP Artist and Professor Emeritus Grace Javier Alfonso as centerpiece. There are also scheduled performances\, short lectures\, workshops\, and book launchings during the two-day event.\n\nThe exhibit title “Pagsalud han dan-ag han adlaw” is Victor Sugbo’s translation of a line from his poem “The Fishers.” The line is part of a longer segment — “Beneath the mangrove trees\, boats / Cupping the flow of sunlight / As if rainwater filling up an empty jar” — that we take as a metaphor for the scholarly and creative work of UP Tacloban faculty\, staff\, and students on the natural and cultural heritage of Eastern Visayas.\n\nThe exhibit motif is mangroves\, symbolizing the rich biodiversity\, culture\, and traditions of Region 8\, as well as the resilience of Eastern Visayan communities in the face of various natural calamities and social upheavals. It is also symbolic of the interconnectedness of the scholarly disciplines in critical and creative thinking and doing.\n\nThrough this showcase of its knowledge production as an institution of higher learning over the past 50 years\, UP Tacloban hopes to inspire and engage the people of Eastern Visayas in the critical work of natural and cultural heritage preservation\, environmental and biodiversity conservation\, community empowerment\, and sustainable development.\n\n#UPTaclobanAt50\n\nSource: UPV Tacloban College Facebook

GLADYS TANANGONAN\nDivision of Reproductive Endocrinology\nand Infertility\nUP Philippine General Hospital\n\nSynthesis and Closing Remarks:\nDr. Stella Marie L. Jose\nHead\, Expanded Education and Training Office\nUP Philippine General Hospital\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #130\nJanuary 20\, 2023\nMasakit ang Puson: Endometrosis kaya?\n\nThe Philippine General Hospital is observing an increase in numbers of women consulting for pelvic pain then diagnosed later as endometriosis. Special clinics have been opened to provide services for this surge in cases.\n\nEndometriosis is a disease where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus\, causing pain and/or infertility. Globally it affects about 10% of women and girls of reproductive age. It is a chronic disease associated with severe\, life-impacting pain during periods\, sexual intercourse\, bowel movements and/or urination\, chronic pelvic pain\, abdominal bloating\, nausea\, fatigue\, and sometimes depression\, anxiety\, and infertility.\n\nBut there seems to be limited awareness about endometriosis — leading to delayed treatment and undue suffering. Is it possible that during the pandemic\, women who experienced pelvic pain paid less attention to this\, resulting in many delayed diagnosis today?\n\nIn this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS\, we will take a closer look at endometriosis – its signs and symptoms and when consultation for pelvic pain is necessary. The main presenter is OB-GYN and infertility specialist and past president of the Philippine Society for Reproductive Medicine\, Dr. Angela Aguilar and the reactor is Dr. Gladys Tanangonan\, who subspecializes in reproductive endocrinology and infertility\, both from the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the UP Philippine General Hospital. Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose\, newly-appointed head of the Expanded Education and Training Office of the UP Philippine General Hospital.\n\nJoin us as we learn more about how COVID-19 has affected health services and contributed to new problems we face in public health.  Together\, we can Stop C.O.V.I.D. Deaths!
