This phenomenon is true not only in the big cities but in the smaller cities as well. Our streets are crowded with motorcycles. Admittedly\, it is a faster way to get around. With the skyrocketing prices of fuel\, it is a solution for those who can no longer afford to drive their cars. But how safe are these two-wheelers?\n\nWHO reports road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5-29 years. Approximately 1.3 million people die each year as a result of road traffic crashes. More than half of all road traffic deaths are among vulnerable road users: pedestrians\, cyclists\, and motorcyclists. Nearly 30% of all road crash deaths involve powered two- and three-wheeled vehicles\, such as motorcycles\, mopeds\, scooters and electric bikes (e-bikes)\, and the numbers are rising.\n\nOn October 11\, the World Health Organization and partners launched “Powered two-and three-wheeler safety: a road safety manual for decision-makers and practitioners” that includes guidelines on developing safer roads\, ensuring safer mobility for all road users\, vehicle safety standards and actions to improve emergency responses to crashes.\n\n“Globally\, key risk factors for motorcycle traffic injuries include drivers not wearing helmets\, speeding\, alcohol impairment\, mixed traffic conditions\, a lack of protection from the vehicle in a crash and a lack of safe infrastructure for powered two and three wheeled vehicles such as poor road surfaces and roadside hazards.”\n\nHow safe are motorcyclists in the Philippines? In this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS\, trauma surgeon\, Dr. Teodoro J. Herbosa\, Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the UP Philippine General Hospital\, will share local data on motorcycle crashes based on reports from Philippine hospitals. He will discuss various injuries from two-wheeler crashes and recommendations to minimize risks for road traffic injuries. Dr. John Juliard L. Go\, National Professional Officer of the World Health Organization (WHO)- Philippines\, will talk about the work of WHO in supporting countries in making their roads safer\, while Mr. Antonio Pagulayan\, OIC of the Traffic Education Division of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will discuss challenges and solutions for road safety. In the Philippines\, the project aims to increase PrEP use among key populations by identifying and evaluating community–derived interventions to be carried out in the cities of Mandaluyong\, Calamba\, and Iloilo.\n\nThe Foundation for the Advancement of Clinical Epidemiology\, Inc. During his student years\, he held several publication positions: two-time vice chairperson of the Philippine Law Journal; managing editor of the Philippine Collegian; and editor-in-chief of SINAG. He obtained his Master of Laws from Harvard Law School and his Master of Public Administration from UP NCPAG.\n\nJoseph Lumanog\, MSW is a social worker and non-profit manager. A former political science student\, he served as editor-in-chief of SINAG\, the official student publication of the UP College of Social Sciences and Philosophy. He obtained his Master of Social Work from The Catholic University of America.\n\nJules Guiang\, MPA is a media practitioner\, youth advocate and former student leader. He worked as TV host and news anchor at PTV 4\, and currently serves as head of community for Rappler. As a youth advocate\, he serves as Founder and Board Chair of both 2030 Youth Force in the Philippines Inc. and the National Alliance of Youth Leaders\, Inc. He also served as vice chairperson of the UP Diliman University Student Council. He obtained his Master of Public Administration from the UP NCPAG.\n\nSiegfried Severino is the 39th Student Regent of the University of the Philippines. Prior to being elected as student regent\, he served as chairperson of the UPLB College of Economics and Management Student Council and the UPLB University Student Council. He is currently an agribusiness management and entrepreneurship student at UP Los Baños.\n\nMaria Llara Sendico is currently the president of The UP Manila Pre-Law Society\, an organization of aspiring students of law dedicated to the promotion of the rights and welfare of the Filipino people. She is currently an organizational communication student at UP Manila.
