DEATHS Webinar Series.\n(Current COVID-19 problems; Other outbreaks; Viruses; Infections; Disasters)\nSo sign up NOW:\nbit.ly/StopCOVIDDeathsWebinar112 \n  \nWebinar #112\nAugust 12\, 2022 (Friday) 12nn\n“NUTRISYON SA PANAHON NG PANDEMYA: Can 250 pesos a day feed a family?”\n\nPresenters:\nDr. Cecilia Cristina S. Acuin\nAdjunct Associate Professor\nInstitute of Human Nutrition and Food\nUniversity of the Philippines Los Baños\n\nMa. Eloisa E. Villaraza RND\, MSCN\nNutrition Consultant\nVice President\nNutritionist-Dietitians’ Association of the Philippines\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #112\nAugust 12\, 2022\n“NUTRISYON SA PANAHON NG PANDEMYA: Can 250 pesos a day feed a family?”\n\nWe can all feel the pinch of high food prices. Will this lead to more malnutrition in our country?\n\nMalnutrition in the Philippines has been a chronic\, silent and insidious threat to health and development. Malnourished children in particular are prone to infections and a vicious cycle of disease and further malnutrition.\n\nPre-pandemic it was estimated that 30 percent of children under 5 years of age were stunted – not tall enough for their age. Other countries with similar levels of income have rates of stunting averaging around 20 percent of children under 5 years of age. The Philippines ranks among the top ten countries globally with the highest number of stunted children.\n\nIn some parts of the country\, stunting is beyond 40 percent of children under five years of age: Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM)\, Mimaropa\, Bicol\, and Western Visayas. In rural areas\, children are more likely to be stunted than their urban counterparts.\n\nThe pandemic has made this situation worse.\n\nWhat is the nutritional status of the country today? Why are prices of food so high? How can the average family survive in an environment where good food is limited and unaffordable?\n\nThe lockdowns in the early part of the pandemic\, loss of jobs\, disruptions in the food supply chains for both locally produced and imported food\, limited food access\, delays in distribution of “ayuda” — all contributed to greater food insecurity throughout the country. With the war raging in Ukraine\, prices of food have skyrocketed. Studies show that households spend about 50% of income on food. If the minimum wage is about P500\, can a family still consume nutritious food on a budget of 250 pesos per day?\n\nIn this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS\, we will take a closer look at the problem of malnutrition against the backdrop of the COVID19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Our experts\, Dr. Cecilia Cristina S. Acuin\, one of the most well-known specialists in nutrition and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the UPLB Institute of Human Nutrition and Food\, will discuss the overall problem of malnutrition in the country\, the importance of the first 1000 days of life and overall policies and programs that seek to improve nutrition and well-being. She will also discuss why prices of food are high as well as general principles to promote better eating choices\, using a food systems framework. Our second speaker\, Ma. Eloisa E. Villaraza\, RND\, MSCN\, Vice President of the Nutritionist – Dietitians’ Association of the Philippines (NDAP)\, will provide us with practical advise on nutritional requirements through different stages of human development and tips on how to stretch the household budget to make sure that nutritional needs are met — despite the high cost of food.\n\nJoin us as we explore ways of preventing hunger and promoting health through better information about nutrition. You heard it first on STOP COVID DEATHS\, your credible on-line community!\n\nTogether\, we can STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS!
