EDMUND E. VILLAROMAN\nChairperson\, Thoracic Surgery and Anesthesia Department\nLung Center of the Philippines\nHead of the Thoracic Section\, Institute of Pulmonary Medicine\nSt. Luke’s Medical Center\nDirector\, Philippine Board of Thoracic Cardiac and Vascular Surgery\nFounding Member\, Southeast Asian Thoracic Society\n\nReactor:\nDR. JOVEN ROQUE V. GONONG\nPulmonologist and Chief\,\nSection of Interventional Pulmonology and Bronchology\nLung Center of the Philippines\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #259\nOctober 10\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nLung Nodule Management: High Tech Na!\n\nThe escalating prevalence of high-resolution\, cross-sectional imaging modalities within the Philippine healthcare system has resulted in an increasing frequency of incidentally discovered pulmonary parenchymal findings\, often presenting as small\, non-calcified\, and clinically indeterminate sub-centimeter lung nodules. These findings pose a critical diagnostic challenge\, thus creating significant anxiety for patients and necessitating a precise\, evidence-based management strategy for all healthcare providers involved in the continuum of care.\n\nIn this week’s episode\, we will provide a comprehensive and practical framework for the multidisciplinary assessment and management of these lesions by translating complex global guidelines into actionable local protocols. We will systematically review the contemporary approach to risk stratification by detailing the critical clinical and radiological parameters that distinguish benign lesions from those requiring urgent intervention or meticulous surveillance. We will discuss the proper use of established prediction models and the interpretation of suspicious morphologic features and growth kinetics\, which are crucial steps that empower the frontline medical professional in determining the appropriate patient pathway. In addition\, we will discuss the role of advanced diagnostic techniques\, including percutaneous needle aspiration and navigational bronchoscopy\, and the indications for definitive surgical resection\, ensuring that all participants understand the complete progression from detection to therapeutic decision-making.\n\nOur main speaker is Dr. Edmund E. Villaroman\, who is the Chairperson of the Thoracic Surgery and Anesthesia Department at the Lung Center of the Philippines and who is also the Head of the Thoracic Section of the Institute of Pulmonary Medicine at St. Luke’s Medical Center. He also serves as Director of the Philippine Board of Thoracic Cardiac and Vascular Surgery and a Founding Member of the Southeast Asian Thoracic Society. Our reactor today is Dr. Joven Roque V. Gonong\, who is a practicing pulmonologist and is the Chief of the Section of Interventional Pulmonology and Bronchology at the Lung Center of the Philippines.\n\nJoin us as we try to elevate the quality of pulmonary nodule care\, minimize unnecessary invasive procedures\, and ensure the timely diagnosis of malignancy so we can improve long-term outcomes for patients across the Philippines. Together\, we can stop preventable deaths!

SUMMARY:"Debt and Informal Imperialism: Europe\, America\, Asia c. 1815-1915"
DESCRIPTION:The Department of History would like to invite everyone to attend the public lecture of Dr. Juan Luis Simal Duran (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) entitled “Debt and Informal Imperialism: Europe\, America\, Asia c. 1815-1915”. The lecture will be held on October 9\, 2025 (Thursday) 2:30 – 4:00 PM at Silid Balatik\, 1st Floor\, Pavilion 2\, Palma Hall\, UP Diliman.\n\nREGISTER HERE: https://bit.ly/DebtInformalImperialism\n\nABSTRACT:\nThis lecture explores the role of European bondholders as agents of informal imperialism in Europe\, America and Asia in the period 1815-1915. Through a historical-financial approach\, it examines the formation of bondholder committees\, their strategies to pressure debtor states\, and their relations with the main financial European powers\, especially Britain and France. Ultimately\, bondholders played a significant role in the international economic structure and should be given serious consideration in debates on informal imperialism and financial domination in the long nineteenth century. Special attention is given to the case of the Spanish debt at two moments of crisis: the revolutions in Latin America (1810-1825)\, and the final dissolution of the Empire in 1898.\n\nSource: UP Departamento ng Kasaysayan Facebook

IRABON\nAssociate Editor\, Philippine Journal of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility\nConsultant\, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology\nAsian Hospital and Medical Center\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #258\nOctober 3\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nSocial Egg Freezing: Mga Dapat Malaman\n\nThe intersection of modern demographic trends\, professional advancement\, and the immutable biology of age-related fertility decline has positioned elective oocyte cryopreservation\, commonly referred to as social egg freezing\, as a critical frontier in preventative reproductive medicine. This imperative procedure\, which leverages ultra-rapid vitrification protocols to preserve oocyte viability\, is increasingly sought by individuals proactively managing their reproductive timelines. The burgeoning utilization of this Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) in the Philippines necessitates a rigorous\, evidence-based review for all tiers of the healthcare community and the informed lay public.\n\nIn this week’s episode\, we will discuss the latest clinical\, procedural\, and ethico-legal developments\, including current pharmacological stimulation protocols\, nuanced metrics of success such as age-stratified live birth rates (LBRs) and utilization kinetics\, and how to critically assess the risk-benefit profile associated with the procedure. We will also examine the evolving regulatory environment\, the complexities of providing comprehensive informed consent in a culturally sensitive context\, and the ethical dialogues surrounding reproductive autonomy\, access\, and equity in the Philippine setting.\n\nOur main speaker is Dr. Lana Corrine Q. Tan-Carpio\, who is a consultant from the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Asian Hospital and Medical Center. SUMMARY:CEBUANO: An Affix-Based Subcategorization of Cebuano Verbs
DESCRIPTION:[Philippine Indigenous Languages Lecture Series]\n\nCEBUANO [ceb]: An Affix-Based Subcategorization of Cebuano Verbs\n30 September | Tuesday | 01:00 PM\nPalma Hall Rm. 428\nDivine Angeli Endriga\nAssistant Professor\nUP Department of Linguistics\n\n—\n\nThe ninth installment of the 2025 Philippine Indigenous Languages Lecture Series (PILLS) will be on the subcategorization of verbs in Cebuano [ceb]\n\nABSTRACT\n\nThis study provides a preliminary affix-based subcategorization of Cebuano verbs\, centering on how affixation interacts with the language’s focus system. Drawing on a corpus of 100 verbs\, the research applies theta-theory and the concepts of focus and subcategorization to analyze five thematic roles: Agent\, Patient\, Locative\, Benefactive\, and Instrumental. Each role is examined in relation to the affixes that mark it—mu-\, mag-\, ma- (Agent); -on\, -an\, ʔi- (Patient); -on\, -an (Locative); -an (Benefactive); and ʔipang- (Instrumental). The findings show that affixes do not correspond in a strict one-to-one relation with focus roles: -on marks both Patient and Locative\, while -an spans Patient\, Locative\, and Benefactive. Certain verbs permit multiple affixes for the same role\, particularly in the Agent focus where mu-\, mag-\, and ma- overlap with nuanced distinctions. The data further reveal that Agent focus is the most widely attested\, while Benefactive is the least. By categorizing verbs through the affixes they select per focus\, this work highlights the fluidity and constraints of the Cebuano verbal system. The research concludes with recommendations for extending the corpus\, including additional affixes and modal forms\, and incorporating syntactic analysis for a fuller account of Cebuano verb behavior.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public.\n\nSource: UP Department of Linguistics Facebook
