SUMMARY:CEBUANO: An Affix-Based Subcategorization of Cebuano Verbs
DESCRIPTION:[Philippine Indigenous Languages Lecture Series]\n\nCEBUANO [ceb]: An Affix-Based Subcategorization of Cebuano Verbs\n30 September | Tuesday | 01:00 PM\nPalma Hall Rm. 428\nDivine Angeli Endriga\nAssistant Professor\nUP Department of Linguistics\n\n—\n\nThe ninth installment of the 2025 Philippine Indigenous Languages Lecture Series (PILLS) will be on the subcategorization of verbs in Cebuano [ceb]\n\nABSTRACT\n\nThis study provides a preliminary affix-based subcategorization of Cebuano verbs\, centering on how affixation interacts with the language’s focus system. Drawing on a corpus of 100 verbs\, the research applies theta-theory and the concepts of focus and subcategorization to analyze five thematic roles: Agent\, Patient\, Locative\, Benefactive\, and Instrumental. Each role is examined in relation to the affixes that mark it—mu-\, mag-\, ma- (Agent); -on\, -an\, ʔi- (Patient); -on\, -an (Locative); -an (Benefactive); and ʔipang- (Instrumental). The findings show that affixes do not correspond in a strict one-to-one relation with focus roles: -on marks both Patient and Locative\, while -an spans Patient\, Locative\, and Benefactive. Certain verbs permit multiple affixes for the same role\, particularly in the Agent focus where mu-\, mag-\, and ma- overlap with nuanced distinctions. The data further reveal that Agent focus is the most widely attested\, while Benefactive is the least. By categorizing verbs through the affixes they select per focus\, this work highlights the fluidity and constraints of the Cebuano verbal system. The research concludes with recommendations for extending the corpus\, including additional affixes and modal forms\, and incorporating syntactic analysis for a fuller account of Cebuano verb behavior.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public.\n\nSource: UP Department of Linguistics Facebook

NICOLE MARELLA G. TAN\nConsultant\, Department of Dermatology\nUP – Philippine General Hospital\n\nReactor:\nDR. VAL CONSTANTINE S. CUA\nConsultant\, Department of Dermatology\nUP – Philippine General Hospital\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #257\nSeptember 26\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nWound You Look at That?\nApproach to Wound Care: From Assessment to Treatment\n\nIn an era of unprecedented challenges and medical advancements\, the landscape of wound management has evolved beyond conventional practices. The modern paradigm demands a comprehensive\, evidence-based approach to the complex etiology and pathophysiology of cutaneous and subcutaneous injuries.\n\nIn this week’s episode\, we will begin with a meticulous review of contemporary wound assessment methodologies\, which highlights the critical role of accurate differential diagnosis and risk stratification. We will dissect the nuances of the various phases of wound healing and the factors that impede them by providing a scientific framework for developing individualized treatment protocols. We will then transition to a robust discussion on advanced treatment modalities\, including both conservative and surgical debridement techniques\, the judicious application of state-of-the-art biological dressings\, and the growing utility of adjunctive therapies. Our expert panel of speakers will share their invaluable insights and clinical experience to help ensure that all attendees are equipped with the knowledge to manage a spectrum of wound types\, from acute traumatic injuries to recalcitrant chronic ulcers and diabetic foot syndromes.\n\nWe have two (2) main speakers today\, both of which are consultants at the Department of Dermatology of the UP – Philippine General Hospital: Dr. Nicole Marella G. Tan and Dr. Val Constantine S. Cua. They will underscore the significance of a holistic\, patient-centric approach to care by recognizing that optimal outcomes are achieved through a multidisciplinary lens. They will also help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application by providing actionable strategies for integrating these advancements into daily practice\, whether in a hospital setting or in community-based care.\n\nJoin us to understand how we can all contribute to enhancing health outcomes and mitigating the considerable morbidity associated with poorly managed wounds across the archipelago.\n\nTogether\, we can stop preventable deaths!

SUMMARY:“Home Is Where the Loot Is: Mythmaking and Memorializing in Two Marcos Mansions”
DESCRIPTION:The UP Third World Studies Center (TWSC) invites the public to a free lecture titled “Home Is Where the Loot Is: Mythmaking and Memorializing in Two Marcos Mansions.” Researchers Arrianne Fajardo and Aidrielle Raymundo (UP TWSC)\, Asst. Prof. Larah del Mundo (UP Department of History)\, and Prof. Joseph Palis (UP Department of Geography) will speak at the event. This project was funded by the UP Diliman OICA.\n\nDATE: September 23\, 2025\nTIME: 10:00am to 12:00nn\nVENUE: Pilar Herrera Hall\, Palma Hall\, University of the Philippines Diliman\n\nA revolt notwithstanding\, the Marcoses have never left us—and may never will. This forum explores an answer to why this is so. An answer that is more rooted in catching a glimpse of displays and signages than in the brute intramurals of elite politics; an answer found in naming and placemaking\, in how power alters memory to erase vestiges of its corrupt history.\n\nHave We Honored the Marcoses Enough? An Inventory of Memorials to the Marcoses and the Places Named After Them is a project of the Marcos Regime Research of the UP Third World Studies Center. It catalogs Marcos sites—those that mention\, in celebratory or “neutral” terms\, the supposed excellence and benevolence of the Marcoses—and by extension\, the Romualdezes—during their conjugal regime. Through this inventory\, we hope to render in bold relief the network of sites where life for almost the past half-century must every day reckon with what the Marcoses have left behind.\n\nSo far\, we have identified over 250 Marcos sites. Across Luzon and the provinces of Leyte and Samar\, we have visited nearly 150 of these: museums\, parks\, government buildings\, houses of worship\, barangays\, schools\, historical markers\, and even a stadium and an airport.\nTo ground the lecture on the publicized “private spaces” of the Marcoses and how these contribute to their image-making\, we revisit two mansions that the conjugal dictators built at the height of their power: the Malacanang of the North in Paoay\, Ilocos Norte\, and the Santo Nino Shrine and Heritage Museum in Tacloban\, Leyte.\n\nAn ArcGIS StoryMaps webpage detailing the sites will be launched to the public on the day of the forum.\n\nSource: UP Twsc Facebook

SUMMARY:Paano Mo Nasabing Tama? Examining Moral Reasoning Using a Cultural-Developmental Approach
DESCRIPTION:Paano Mo Nasabing Tama? Examining Moral Reasoning Using a Cultural-Developmental Approach\n\nHow can people say that something is right or wrong\, and how does this reasoning change throughout our lives? This question has been addressed by theories and research on the development of moral reasoning for decades\, but they have often left culture and power out of the conversation. This lecture discusses how we can extend our understanding of moral reasoning in a way that integrates culture and power\, with an example of research on urban Filipino young adults. It also tackles issues of changing and often conflicting perspectives about right and wrong in the context of a rapidly changing Filipino society and explores ways to bridge these viewpoints to promote our collective good.\n\n———————————————————————————————————\n\nPaano natin masasabi na tama o mali ang isang bagay\, at paano nagbabago ang pangangatwirang ito sa panghabambuhay? – 7:00 n.g.\, sa Lagmay Hall Room 304\, UP Diliman at FB Live. JUDITH S. GALANG-PEREZ\nHead\, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Unit\nPerpetual Help Medical Center – Las Piñas\nConsultant\, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology\nAsian Hospital and Medical Center\nMedical Specialist II\, Las Piñas General Hospital and Satellite Trauma Center \nReactor:\nDR. INA S. IRABON\nConsultant\, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology\nAsian Hospital and Medical Center \n———————————————————– \nWebinar #256\nSeptember 19\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nMaagang Pag-Lingap:\nA Patient-Centered Approach to Endometriosis \nIn the dynamic and evolving landscape of women’s health\, endometriosis remains a profoundly challenging and often debilitating chronic inflammatory condition\, with a significant public health impact in the Philippines. While its pathophysiology has been studied extensively\, conventional approaches to diagnosis and management have historically focused on symptomatic relief\, often overlooking the patient’s holistic journey and enduring psychosocial burdens. The paradigm shift towards a truly patient-centered care model necessitates a re-evaluation of current practices\, emphasizing shared decision-making\, early diagnosis\, and a multidisciplinary\, collaborative framework. \nIn this week’s episode\, we will discuss contemporary insights into the non-invasive diagnostic modalities and advanced therapeutic strategies for endometriosis\, moving beyond the traditional surgical-first approach. Our panel of experts will provide a comprehensive overview of the disease’s natural history — from symptom onset to long-term sequelae\, with a particular focus on the unique challenges faced by Filipino women. We will discuss the imperative for a coordinated care model by highlighting everyone’s crucial role in initial patient-provider encounters\, symptom recognition\, and accurate referral pathways. Furthermore\, we will explore the integration of adjunct therapies and psychosocial support mechanisms\, which underscore that optimal outcomes are measured not solely by the eradication of lesions but by a significant improvement in the patient’s long-term quality of life. \nOur main speaker is Dr. Judith S. Galang-Perez\, who is the Head of the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Unit at the Perpetual Help Medical Center – Las Piñas. She is also a consultant of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center\, as well as at the Las Piñas General Hospital and Satellite Trauma Center. Reacting to her talk is Dr. Ina S. Irabon\, who is also a consultant of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center. \nJoin us so we can learn how to elevate the standard of care for endometriosis patients in the Philippines. And together\, we can stop preventable deaths.
