SUMMARY:“Home Is Where the Loot Is: Mythmaking and Memorializing in Two Marcos Mansions”
DESCRIPTION:The UP Third World Studies Center (TWSC) invites the public to a free lecture titled “Home Is Where the Loot Is: Mythmaking and Memorializing in Two Marcos Mansions.” Researchers Arrianne Fajardo and Aidrielle Raymundo (UP TWSC)\, Asst. Prof. Larah del Mundo (UP Department of History)\, and Prof. Joseph Palis (UP Department of Geography) will speak at the event. This project was funded by the UP Diliman OICA.\n\nDATE: September 23\, 2025\nTIME: 10:00am to 12:00nn\nVENUE: Pilar Herrera Hall\, Palma Hall\, University of the Philippines Diliman\n\nA revolt notwithstanding\, the Marcoses have never left us—and may never will. This forum explores an answer to why this is so. An answer that is more rooted in catching a glimpse of displays and signages than in the brute intramurals of elite politics; an answer found in naming and placemaking\, in how power alters memory to erase vestiges of its corrupt history.\n\nHave We Honored the Marcoses Enough? An Inventory of Memorials to the Marcoses and the Places Named After Them is a project of the Marcos Regime Research of the UP Third World Studies Center. It catalogs Marcos sites—those that mention\, in celebratory or “neutral” terms\, the supposed excellence and benevolence of the Marcoses—and by extension\, the Romualdezes—during their conjugal regime. Through this inventory\, we hope to render in bold relief the network of sites where life for almost the past half-century must every day reckon with what the Marcoses have left behind.\n\nSo far\, we have identified over 250 Marcos sites. Across Luzon and the provinces of Leyte and Samar\, we have visited nearly 150 of these: museums\, parks\, government buildings\, houses of worship\, barangays\, schools\, historical markers\, and even a stadium and an airport.\nTo ground the lecture on the publicized “private spaces” of the Marcoses and how these contribute to their image-making\, we revisit two mansions that the conjugal dictators built at the height of their power: the Malacanang of the North in Paoay\, Ilocos Norte\, and the Santo Nino Shrine and Heritage Museum in Tacloban\, Leyte.\n\nAn ArcGIS StoryMaps webpage detailing the sites will be launched to the public on the day of the forum.\n\nSource: UP Twsc Facebook

SUMMARY:Paano Mo Nasabing Tama? Examining Moral Reasoning Using a Cultural-Developmental Approach
DESCRIPTION:Paano Mo Nasabing Tama? Examining Moral Reasoning Using a Cultural-Developmental Approach\n\nHow can people say that something is right or wrong\, and how does this reasoning change throughout our lives? This question has been addressed by theories and research on the development of moral reasoning for decades\, but they have often left culture and power out of the conversation. This lecture discusses how we can extend our understanding of moral reasoning in a way that integrates culture and power\, with an example of research on urban Filipino young adults. It also tackles issues of changing and often conflicting perspectives about right and wrong in the context of a rapidly changing Filipino society and explores ways to bridge these viewpoints to promote our collective good.\n\n———————————————————————————————————\n\nPaano natin masasabi na tama o mali ang isang bagay\, at paano nagbabago ang pangangatwirang ito sa panghabambuhay? – 7:00 n.g.\, sa Lagmay Hall Room 304\, UP Diliman at FB Live. While its pathophysiology has been studied extensively\, conventional approaches to diagnosis and management have historically focused on symptomatic relief\, often overlooking the patient’s holistic journey and enduring psychosocial burdens. The paradigm shift towards a truly patient-centered care model necessitates a re-evaluation of current practices\, emphasizing shared decision-making\, early diagnosis\, and a multidisciplinary\, collaborative framework. \nIn this week’s episode\, we will discuss contemporary insights into the non-invasive diagnostic modalities and advanced therapeutic strategies for endometriosis\, moving beyond the traditional surgical-first approach. Our panel of experts will provide a comprehensive overview of the disease’s natural history — from symptom onset to long-term sequelae\, with a particular focus on the unique challenges faced by Filipino women. We will discuss the imperative for a coordinated care model by highlighting everyone’s crucial role in initial patient-provider encounters\, symptom recognition\, and accurate referral pathways. Furthermore\, we will explore the integration of adjunct therapies and psychosocial support mechanisms\, which underscore that optimal outcomes are measured not solely by the eradication of lesions but by a significant improvement in the patient’s long-term quality of life. \nOur main speaker is Dr. Judith S. Galang-Perez\, who is the Head of the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Unit at the Perpetual Help Medical Center – Las Piñas. She is also a consultant of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center\, as well as at the Las Piñas General Hospital and Satellite Trauma Center. Reacting to her talk is Dr. Ina S. Irabon\, who is also a consultant of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center. \nJoin us so we can learn how to elevate the standard of care for endometriosis patients in the Philippines. And together\, we can stop preventable deaths.

SUMMARY:DAMÁ Brownbag Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first session of the DAMÁ Brownbag Sessions as Michael Manahan (UP Department of Linguistics) unpacks Filipino fear through the lens of language and culture\, and Jayson Petras\, PhD (UPD Departamento ng Filipino at Panitikan ng Pilipinas) explores how Filipinos feel and make sense of sayá through language and culture.\n\nAdmission is free and everyone is welcome.\n\n17 September 2025 (Wednesday) | 14:30–16:00\nCSSP Health & Wellness Center | Palma Hall Pavilion 1\, 3/F\nUniversity of the Philippines Diliman\n_\n\nThe Filipino Fear\n\nThis talk begins with a question: What do Filipinos fear? And from there\, it branches into other questions about language\, culture\, and the everyday ways we feel our way through the world. Using the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) approach\, I take a closer look at kaba\, pangamba\, and takot not just as words in a dictionary but as emotional scripts that live in the body\, in thought\, and in time. NSM helps us unpack these emotions using a shared “mini-language.” Through this\, we may be able to see kaba as both a warning and an echo\, pangamba as care shaped by uncertainty\, and takot as a mental script that may unfold with a physical force. In studying the Filipino fear\, we see that we are not just defining emotions but we are also mapping out a way of seeing\, valuing\, and moving in the world. Because to ask what do we fear is also to ask: what do we hold close and what do we hope not to lose?\n\n__\nMichael Manahan\, Lecturer at the UP Department of Linguistics\, teaches linguistics and Japanese while researching how Filipinos talk about emotions through the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) approach.\n__\n\n“Masayá kung sama-sama”: Pakahulugan sa sayá sa kontekstong Pilipino\n\nKaraniwang itinuturing ang Pilipinas na isa sa pinakaemosyonal na bansa sa daigdig\, na pinagtitibay ng mayamang bokabularyong nauukol sa damdamin. Paksa ng kaniyang disertasyon ang mga salitang damdamin sa wikang Filipino na sinuri sa lapit ng Natural na Semantikong Metawika (NSM).\n__\n\nThe DAMÁ Brownbag Sessions is a project by the UP Department of History\, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy and is funded by the UPD Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts (UPD-OICA) through the UPD-OICA Grants.\n\nSource: DAMÁ: Emotion Research Group Facebook

SUMMARY:Radical Routes: Filipino Migrant Narratives and Spatial Justice in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Heo/Geo Lecture Series 2025-09: Chris Sorio on spatial justice among Filipino migrants in Canada\n\nIn writing about urban labor migration of Filipinos in Canada\, Philip Kelly emphasized the spatiality of class in studying mobilities because “class subjectivities might be complicated by the spatiality of migration\, which is an … important feature of the global economy” (Kelly\, 2012\, p. 154). While scholarly materials have been written about Filipinos in Canada in relation to assimilation and identity\, labor migration and transnational habitus\, few have been written about migrant geographies from the perspective of a labor worker and organiser.\n\nFor the ninth lecture for 2025 of the Heo/Geo Lecture Series of the UP Department of Geography and co-sponsored by the UP Center for International Studies (UPCIS)\, Chris Sorio will talk about narratives of Filipino labor migrants: his and other Filipino workers in Canada. Sorio’s talk titled Radical Routes: Filipino Migrant Narratives and Spatial Justice in Canada happens on Friday\, 12 September 2025 at 5:30PM Philippine Standard Time (5:30AM Eastern Standard Time) via Zoom.\n\nThe talk is preceded by a screening of filmmaker Alfredo Ruzol’s short film Recipe for Change which focused on Chris Sorio\, and which was shown in Toronto in 2024. The Philippine Reporter which covered the event in Seneca Polytechnic singled out Ruzol’s film\, thus “[t]he documentary revisits Sorio’s harrowing experience during the Marcos Sr. dictatorship in the Philippines. At just 21 years old\, Sorio was arrested and tortured by soldiers in Manila in 1982. Now living in Toronto\, he continues his activism to ensure that this dark chapter of history is not forgotten.”Sorio’s presentation\, on the other hand\, examines the lived experiences of Filipino migrants in Canada through the lens of spatial justice\, drawing upon radical geography to illuminate the intersections of displacement\, labour\, and resistance. By foregrounding personal narratives and community histories\, it explores how Filipino migrants navigate and contest the socio-spatial inequalities embedded within Canada’s immigration and labour systems. The analysis highlights the ways in which migrants transform everyday spaces—such as workplaces\, community centres\, and domestic environments—into sites of agency and solidarity. Through this exploration\, the presentation aims to shed light on the broader implications for understanding migrant geographies and the pursuit of spatial justice in contemporary Canada.\n\nChris Sorio is currently the secretary general of Migrante Canada—a grassroots organization supporting temporary foreign workers and immigrants. He is currently an MA student in critical human geography at the Environmental and Urban Change of York University. Alfredo Ruzol is a filmmaker and media producer who pursues untold stories about climate justice\, human rights\, social issues\, and peacebuilding. Recipe for Change was recently shortlisted in the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2025.\n\nThe event is co-sponsored by the UP Department of Geography\, UP Center for International Studies\, and the Philippine Geographical Society. The Heo/Geo Lecture Series is a monthly resource talk / lecture given by academic geographers\, geography-adjacent scholars\, practitioners working in geospatial industries\, and partners that engaged in multiple publics\, and based locally and abroad. The talk ranges from the sharing of research findings to pedagogical practices and field-based experiences. This month’s Heo/Geo Lecture Series is facilitated by two research clusters at the UP Department of Geography: Human Geography (HUG) and Media\, Literary Geographies\, and Geohumanities (MELANGE).\n\nTo participate in the event\, click this link to register.
