SUMMARY:Radical Routes: Filipino Migrant Narratives and Spatial Justice in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Heo/Geo Lecture Series 2025-09: Chris Sorio on spatial justice among Filipino migrants in Canada\n\nIn writing about urban labor migration of Filipinos in Canada\, Philip Kelly emphasized the spatiality of class in studying mobilities because “class subjectivities might be complicated by the spatiality of migration\, which is an … important feature of the global economy” (Kelly\, 2012\, p. 154). While scholarly materials have been written about Filipinos in Canada in relation to assimilation and identity\, labor migration and transnational habitus\, few have been written about migrant geographies from the perspective of a labor worker and organiser.\n\nFor the ninth lecture for 2025 of the Heo/Geo Lecture Series of the UP Department of Geography and co-sponsored by the UP Center for International Studies (UPCIS)\, Chris Sorio will talk about narratives of Filipino labor migrants: his and other Filipino workers in Canada. Sorio’s talk titled Radical Routes: Filipino Migrant Narratives and Spatial Justice in Canada happens on Friday\, 12 September 2025 at 5:30PM Philippine Standard Time (5:30AM Eastern Standard Time) via Zoom.\n\nThe talk is preceded by a screening of filmmaker Alfredo Ruzol’s short film Recipe for Change which focused on Chris Sorio\, and which was shown in Toronto in 2024. The Philippine Reporter which covered the event in Seneca Polytechnic singled out Ruzol’s film\, thus “[t]he documentary revisits Sorio’s harrowing experience during the Marcos Sr. dictatorship in the Philippines. At just 21 years old\, Sorio was arrested and tortured by soldiers in Manila in 1982. Now living in Toronto\, he continues his activism to ensure that this dark chapter of history is not forgotten.”Sorio’s presentation\, on the other hand\, examines the lived experiences of Filipino migrants in Canada through the lens of spatial justice\, drawing upon radical geography to illuminate the intersections of displacement\, labour\, and resistance. By foregrounding personal narratives and community histories\, it explores how Filipino migrants navigate and contest the socio-spatial inequalities embedded within Canada’s immigration and labour systems. The analysis highlights the ways in which migrants transform everyday spaces—such as workplaces\, community centres\, and domestic environments—into sites of agency and solidarity. Through this exploration\, the presentation aims to shed light on the broader implications for understanding migrant geographies and the pursuit of spatial justice in contemporary Canada.\n\nChris Sorio is currently the secretary general of Migrante Canada—a grassroots organization supporting temporary foreign workers and immigrants. He is currently an MA student in critical human geography at the Environmental and Urban Change of York University. Alfredo Ruzol is a filmmaker and media producer who pursues untold stories about climate justice\, human rights\, social issues\, and peacebuilding. Recipe for Change was recently shortlisted in the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2025.\n\nThe event is co-sponsored by the UP Department of Geography\, UP Center for International Studies\, and the Philippine Geographical Society. The Heo/Geo Lecture Series is a monthly resource talk / lecture given by academic geographers\, geography-adjacent scholars\, practitioners working in geospatial industries\, and partners that engaged in multiple publics\, and based locally and abroad. The talk ranges from the sharing of research findings to pedagogical practices and field-based experiences. This month’s Heo/Geo Lecture Series is facilitated by two research clusters at the UP Department of Geography: Human Geography (HUG) and Media\, Literary Geographies\, and Geohumanities (MELANGE).\n\nTo participate in the event\, click this link to register. MARTHA L. MILLAR-AQUINO\nPresident\nPhilippine Infectious Diseases Society for Obstetrics & Gynecology\n\nReactor:\nDR. CARREN ANNE B. BOCALING\nHead and Medical Specialist IV\, Department of Virology\nResearch Institute for Tropical Medicine\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #255\nSeptember 12\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nBagong Virus!\nPaano Maiiwasan Ang Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Infection?\n\nInfectious respiratory pathogens continue to pose a significant public health challenge in the Philippines\, with a particular undercurrent of concern surrounding the often-overlooked respiratory syncytial virus\, or RSV. While frequently dismissed as a mild\, seasonal illness\, RSV is\, in fact\, the most prevalent respiratory virus detected in hospitalized children under two years old in the country\, with peak activity typically occurring from May to November. The burden of this disease extends far beyond the pediatric population and presents a serious threat to vulnerable adults\, including the elderly and those with chronic cardiopulmonary conditions. Despite this documented disease burden and its tangible impact on both individual health and the healthcare system\, a substantial knowledge gap persists across various professional and lay communities. This deficiency in understanding clinical presentations\, diagnostic modalities\, and effective management strategies leads to delayed interventions\, suboptimal patient outcomes\, and a significant strain on frontline healthcare workers.\n\nGuided by the insights of leading infectious diseases specialists\, our episode this week will talk about the latest evidence-based data and practical\, actionable insights on the epidemiology\, clinical manifestations\, and nuanced management of RSV in the Philippine context. We will discuss the latest advancements in diagnostic tools and therapeutic interventions\, while also providing a comprehensive overview of innovative preventative measures that can be adopted to safeguard our most susceptible populations.\n\nOur main speaker is Dr. Martha L. Millar-Aquino\, who is the President of the Philippine Infectious Diseases Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology. Reacting to her talk is the Head (Medical Specialist IV) of the Department of Virology at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine\, Dr. Carren Anne B. Bocaling.\n\nJoin us so we can learn how to mitigate the impact of RSV and contribute to a more resilient\, health-conscious community. Together\, we can stop preventable deaths.

SUMMARY:Español en contacto: Language Change in a Changing World
DESCRIPTION:SEMINAR: Español en contacto: Language Change in a Changing World || Aaron Santa María (FWO PhD Fellow\, Department of Linguistics\, Ghent University)\n\nThursday\, 11 September 2025. 1:00-2:30 PM.\nCAL AVR\, PAV 1\, Palma Hall.\nREGISTRATION: https://forms.gle/WMPqUWvMSmNBZWKYA\n(The event is co-hosted by the UP Department of Linguistics)\n\n***\n\nABSTRACT: Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world\, but its story is not just about numbers—it’s about people\, movement\, and identity. This talk explores Spanish as a heritage language\, focusing on how immigration and language acquisition shape the way it is spoken across generations. We’ll discuss what happens when children grow up hearing Spanish at home but are educated mainly in another language\, how bilingualism reshapes grammar and vocabulary\, and why heritage speakers often create new\, dynamic forms of Spanish. Drawing on examples from communities across the Netherlands and United Kingdom\, we will show how contact with other languages leads to both challenges and innovations. Ultimately\, we’ll see how heritage Spanish is not a “weakened” form\, but a powerful marker of cultural identity and a key driver of language change.\n\nBIO: DEL alumnus Aaron Santa María is a researcher in clinical linguistics\, neurolinguistics\, and psycholinguistics with a European Joint Master’s degree from the Universities of Groningen\, Ghent\, and Eastern Finland. He is currently pursuing a PhD at Ghent University\, where he studies intra-word code-switching between English and Tagalog using approaches from corpus linguistics\, experimental psycholinguistics\, and sociolinguistics. He has collaborated with the Centre for Language\, Brain and Learning at UiT in Norway and has teaching experience in both Spain and the Philippines (UP Visayas). His research interests also include phonological development\, morphosyntax\, and language processing.\n\nSource: UPD Department of European Languages Facebook

SUMMARY:THE BRAIN AS A LANGUAGE ORGAN: A FUNCTIONAL NEUROANATOMY OF LANGUAGE
DESCRIPTION:THE BRAIN AS A LANGUAGE ORGAN: A FUNCTIONAL NEUROANATOMY OF LANGUAGE\n\nLinguistics Special Lecture Series (LSLS) 2025 No. 6\n10 September | Wednesday | 2:30 PM\nCSSP Health and Wellness Center\n\nThe Linguistics Special Lecture Series (LSLS) features talks by invited experts on various topics under the fields of theoretical and applied linguistics. For this sixth installment\, visiting research fellow Aaron Santa Maria\, PhD Fellow at Ghent University\, will give a talk on the brain as a language organ.\n\nABSTRACT\nHow does the brain make language possible? This talk will explore the fascinating ways our brains allow us to speak\, understand\, read\, and write. For a long time\, linguists thought that language lived mainly in two specific brain areas. Today\, research paints a much more complex picture: language depends on a wide network of regions that work together\, from the frontal and temporal lobes to deeper brain structures. We’ll look at how these areas connect to form pathways for understanding meaning and producing speech\, and how both sides of the brain play important but different roles—for example\, one side helping with grammar\, the other with tone and emotion. Along the way\, we’ll revisit key discoveries\, highlight new brain imaging insights\, and show how the brain truly functions as an organ of language and a system designed for human communication.\n\nBIONOTE\nAaron Santa María obtained his European Joint Master’s Degree in Clinical Linguistics from the University of Groningen\, Ghent University\, and the University of Eastern Finland in 2024\, specializing in neurolinguistics\, psycholinguistics\, and clinical linguistics. He conducted his research internship at the Center for Language\, Brain and Learning at UiT–The Arctic University of Norway in the Heritage Language Acquisition project with Dr. Brechje van Osch\, and continues to collaborate with the same center as an affiliate researcher. In 2020\, he graduated with a degree in European Languages (Spanish and French) from the University of the Philippines Diliman.\n\nIn 2024\, Aaron received an PhD fellowship grant from the Flemish Research Foundation for his project ‘Towards an integrative account of English-Tagalog intra-word code-switching’ at Ghent University under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Renata Enghels (Ghent University)\, Prof. Dr. Robert Hartsuiker (Ghent University)\, and Dr. María del Carmen Parafita Couto (Leiden University). In his PhD project at Ghent University\, he is studying the intra-word code-switching structures as spoken by various speech communities in the Philippines and their underlying linguistic processes using innovative approaches from corpus linguistics\, experimental psycholinguistics\, and sociolinguistics.\n\nHis research interests also include phonological development\, morphosyntax\, and language processing.\n\nIn addition to his research experience\, Aaron has had several stints as an educator. From 2020 to 2022\, he worked for the Spanish Ministry of Education as a bilingual language assistant in the public education sector in Madrid. Concurrently\, he also worked as a lecturer of Spanish at the University of the Philippines.\n\nThis face-to-face event is free and open to the public.\n\nSource: UP Department of Linguistics Facebook

This pioneering initiative addresses a critical gap in reproductive and sexual well-being\, moving beyond conventional obstetrics and gynecology to encompass a comprehensive range of clinical services. The clinic’s mission is founded on evidence-based protocols and a multidisciplinary approach\, ensuring that patient care is not only medically sound but also sensitive to the multifaceted needs of individuals and couples. It will serve as a beacon for advancing local clinical practice and public health education\, offering specialized diagnostic capabilities\, counseling services\, and therapeutic interventions for a wide spectrum of sexual health concerns. This includes\, but is not limited to\, the prevention and management of sexually transmitted infections\, fertility preservation\, and hormonal health\, all delivered within a framework of compassionate\, patient-centered care.\n\nIn this week’s episode\, we will bridge the knowledge gap and foster interdisciplinary collaboration by sharing invaluable insights into the clinic’s operational framework\, its epidemiological rationale\, and the practical application of its unique service offerings. We will also aim to demystify the field of sexual health and provide a clear understanding of the accessible\, confidential\, and comprehensive care that is now available.\n\nOur main speaker is Dr. Sherri Ann L. Suplido\, who is the Chief of the Division of Sexual Health at the UP-PGH Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Our reactor is Dr. Angela G. SUMMARY:Finding Nellie: Documenting Local History
DESCRIPTION:Finding Nellie: Documenting Local History follows archaeologist Ellie De Castro’s two-year search to uncover a 71-year old mystery behind Nellie E. Brown Elementary School\, a public school in Olongapo City. What began as a simple question became a transpacific historical investigation spanning public and private archives\, cemeteries\, military records\, oral histories\, and community memories in the Philippines and abroad.\n\nSeptember 4 will mark the film’s first public screening\, followed by a Q&A session with the director and project team. A reception will be held before and after the film premiere at the Ishmael Bernal Gallery\, where an exhibit curated by the Finding Nellie Team will also be on display.\n\nFor those unable to attend the premiere\, the UP Film Institute will continue to host the exhibit at the Ishmael Bernal Gallery and screen the film at Cine Adarna until September 6\, 2025. This event is supported by the UP Diliman Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts and the Department of Philosophy of the UP Diliman College of Social Sciences and Philosophy.\n\nThe documentary film includes a posthumous appearance by the late Prof. Leonardo De Castro of the UP Department of Philosophy and alumnus of Nellie E. Brown Elementary School.\n\nSource: Finding Nellie Facebook Events page
