SUMMARY:UP Vargas Museum Family Day
DESCRIPTION:Family Day at the UP Vargas Museum happens this Saturday!\n\nRegister to join\, bit.ly/UPVMFamilyDay.\n\nThe UP Vargas Museum invites families with children aged 6 to 10 years old to join us for a Family Day event on Saturday\, 9 August 2025\, from 9:30 AM to 12 NN. Family Day at the Vargas Museum will bring children closer to nature with activities including gardening and zine-making. Teacher and illustrator Patti Ramos will join us during the art activity sessions.\n\nWe encourage everyone to wear comfortable clothing and to bring their tumblers or water bottles.\n\nThe UP Vargas Museum Family Day is the culminating activity for our “Art as Pedagogy: Neighborhoods and shared resources” project. “Art as Pedagogy: Neighborhoods and shared resources” is part of the UP Diliman Arts and Culture Festival 2025. Aligned with this year’s theme\, “Kalahok sa Nagbabagong Kalikasan\,” the project aims to develop expanded pedagogical materials that weave art practices\, sustainability\, and the museum’s social practice project\, which is our ongoing Gardens and Homesteads initiative. It positions art institutions like the museum as a site for gathering and sharing. It also foregrounds education as the core thrust of the Vargas Museum alongside curation and research.\n\n“Art as Pedagogy: Neighborhoods and shared resources” is part of the Arts and Culture Festival organized by the UP Diliman Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts (UP Diliman OICA). It is an umbrella project for the second phase of the Southeast Asia Neighborhoods Network (SEANNET) for its Manila case study.\n\nSource: UP Vargas Museum Facebook

VILORIA\nPediatric Gynecologist and Medical Specialist II\nPhilippine Children’s Medical Center\nActive Consultant\, Asian Hospital and Medical Center\nClinical Associate Professor\, UP-PGH Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology\nFellow\, Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Society of the Philippines\nFellow\, Philippine Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology\n\nReactor:\nDR. RODELLE JOY G. LUCION-SIMATUPANG\nHead\, Section of Pediatric Gynecology\nAsian Hospital and Medical Center\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #250\nAugust 8\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nAray! Masakit Ang Puson!\nUnmasking Endometriosis in Adolescents\n\nIn the dynamic landscape of women’s health\, endometriosis stands as a formidable challenge\, particularly within the adolescent demographic. This chronic inflammatory condition often initiates its symptomatic journey in the formative years\, yet its diagnosis remains subject to a significant and often debilitating delay. This delay\, which averages several years\, is a critical issue that compromises not only the physical well-being of young Filipinos but also their psychological and social development\, which leads to chronic pelvic pain\, dysmenorrhea\, anxiety\, and school absenteeism. The symptoms in adolescents can be atypical\, further complicating the diagnostic process and contributing to the normalization of severe menstrual pain as a standard part of maturation. It is a misconception that endometriosis is solely an adult ailment\, and this persistent myth hinders early intervention.\n\nIn this week’s episode\, we will focus on the unique clinical presentations of adolescent endometriosis. It is characterized by the presence of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterine cavity and often manifests as clear vesicles and red lesions rather than the “powder-burn” lesions typically seen in adults. We will discuss the nuances of non-invasive diagnostic modalities (e.g.\, advanced ultrasonography) and review the latest evidence-based treatment protocols.\n\nWe aim to empower our audience with the updated insights and practical tools necessary for a more proactive and holistic approach to care. We will emphasize the importance of a high index of suspicion\, the multidisciplinary management of pain\, and the vital role of each healthcare professional: from initial patient consultation and symptom recognition to therapeutic support and patient education.\n\nOur main presenter is Dr. Toni Andrea Marie D. Viloria\, who is a pediatric gynecologist at the Philippine Children’s Medical Center and also an active consultant at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center. She is also a faculty member of the UP-PGH Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a fellow of the Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Society of the Philippines and the Philippine Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Our reactor is Dr. Rodelle Joy G. Lucion-Simatupang\, who is the Head of the Section of Pediatric Gynecology at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center.\n\nJoin us in learning how to significantly reduce diagnostic delays\, enhance treatment efficacy\, and ultimately\, improve the quality of life for adolescent Filipinos grappling with this challenging condition. This is a call to action to re-evaluate our approach to menstrual health and to ensure that no young person’s pain is dismissed or left unaddressed.

SICAM\nClinical Associate Professor\, Division of Gynecologic Oncology\nDepartment of Obstetrics and Gynecology\nUP College of Medicine and Philippine General Hospital\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #248\nJuly 25\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nLiwanag sa Kababaihan\nUnveiling Updates in Endometrial Cancer\n\nEndometrial cancer\, a significant gynecologic malignancy\, continues to present evolving challenges within the Philippine healthcare landscape. Its prevalence\, risk factors\, and the nuances of its clinical manifestation necessitate a robust understanding across all echelons of medical practice and within the general public. This imperative becomes even more pronounced given recent epidemiological shifts\, which underscore the need for heightened awareness and improved early detection strategies. Abnormal uterine bleeding\, particularly in postmenopausal individuals\, remains the cardinal symptom\, yet a broader appreciation of subtle indicators and high-risk patient profiles is crucial for timely intervention.\n\nIn this week’s episode\, we will meticulously explore contemporary epidemiological trends specific to the Philippines in order to shed light on incidence rates\, demographic vulnerabilities\, and the societal impact of this condition. We will elucidate diagnostic innovations — from advancements in endometrial biopsy techniques and hysteroscopy to the utility of specific tumor markers and molecular profiling in precise characterization. Moreover\, we will navigate the complexities of current management paradigms\, including surgical approaches\, including the roles of hysterectomy\, salpingo-oophorectomy\, and lymphadenectomy\, with an emphasis on appropriate staging and minimally invasive techniques pertinent to the local context. We will also discuss adjuvant therapies and explore the evidence-based application of chemotherapy\, radiation therapy (including brachytherapy)\, and hormonal therapy\, discerning their indications and potential synergistic effects in diverse clinical scenarios.\n\nOur main presenter is Dr. Marie Aleli R. De Castro-Malig\, who is the Vice President of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists of the Philippines. She is also the Chairperson of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Perpetual Help Medical Center in Las Piñas City and the Head of the Section of Gynecologic Oncology at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center. Our reactor is Dr. Renee Vina G. Sicam\, who is a Clinical Associate Professor from the UP-PGH Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.\n\nJoin us in learning about early recognition\, referral\, supportive care\, and pharmaceutical management of endometrial cancer patients as we reinforce the multidisciplinary nature of optimal patient journeys. Together\, we can stop preventable deaths!

SUMMARY:On Local Ecologies: Artist Roundtable on Exhibiting ‘Art and Ecology’ in / for / from a University
DESCRIPTION:Bilang pangwakas na aktibidad ng proyektong Kalikhasan: Outdoor Art Projects on Campus Ecology\, inaanyayahan ang lahat na makilahok sa On Local Ecologies: Artist Roundtable on Exhibiting ‘Art and Ecology’ in / for / from a University. Prop. Mark Louie Lugue\, ang co-curator ng Kalikhasan project\, bilang tagapagpadaloy ng programa.\n\n// Roundtable Abstract:\n\nIn the country\, earlier attempts at exhibiting art guided by ecological consciousness can be traced back to the 1970s\, a period that witnessed a notable growth in environmentalism. Around half a century forward\, more art exhibitions led and hosted locally have sought to tease out and underscore the ties between art and ecology. These tapped on the potential of art in surfacing the impact of humanity on the environment and in raising climate awareness. In the same vein\, institutions and other groups began to examine or further reexamined their ways of working in response to the challenges of environmental sustainability.\n\nThis roundtable finds its position within this landscape by asking: What is added when we forward art as a proposition to ecological discourses through an exhibition situated in\, for\, and/or from a university? The University is a setting that is poised to offer a compelling perspective and starting point given its potential to be a progressive site of knowledge co-production despite inherent contradictions presented by the bureaucracies and conventions it tends to maintain as an institution. This potential rests in how the institution can flesh out and engender intergenerational exchanges and collaborations amongst its diverse disciplinal grounds and communities. More specifically\, the session asks: What can the unique contours of the University of the Philippines Diliman—its institutional history\, physical environment\, communities\, legacies\, and present affairs—contribute to these ongoing conversations?\n\nDrawing from the idea of “local ecologies\,” the forum shall see the university as both a microcosm intrinsically linked with broader environmental systems\, and a distinct ecosystem in its own right. Taking this as a frame for understanding the UPD community\, the forum brings together artists Dayang Yraola\, Karl Castro\, and Isola Tong\, who recently participated in the exhibition “Kalikhasan: Outdoor Art Projects on Campus Ecology” that ran from February to June this year. It offers an opportunity to reflect on the experience of conceiving and mounting outdoor and site-specific artworks that resonate with ecological discourses within and beyond the university\, as they intersected with longstanding conversations on politics\, class\, and gender.\n\n—\nAng Kalikhasan ay bahagi ng UP Diliman Arts and Culture Festival 2025 (UPDACF 2025) na may temang “Kalahok sa Nagbabagong Kalikasan”.
