SUMMARY:Health UPdates Webinar #242: "Ano Ba Ang Latest?" Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Disease
DESCRIPTION:The University of the Philippines\,\nin partnership with the UP Manila – National Institutes of Health\,\nand in cooperation with UP Philippine General Hospital and UP College of Medicine\,\nwould like to invite you to attend this webinar! \n  \nRegistration slots are limited to this HEALTH UPDATES webinar\nSo sign up NOW:\nbit.ly/HealthUpdatesWebinar242 \n  \nWebinar #242\nJune 13\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nAno Ba Ang Latest?\nEmerging and Reemerging Infectious Disease\n\nPresenter:\nDR. ARTHUR DESSI E. ROMAN\nActive Consultant and Clinical Associate Professor\, Division of Infectious Diseases\nDepartment of Medicine\nUP – Philippine General Hospital\n\nPresenter:\nDR. WINLOVE P. MOJICA\nChief\, Division of Infectious Dermatology\nDepartment of Dermatology\nUP – Philippine General Hospital\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #242\nJune 13\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nAno Ba Ang Latest?\nEmerging and Reemerging Infectious Disease\n\nInfectious diseases continue to present dynamic challenges to global public health\, and the recent resurgence of mpox (formerly monkeypox) in various regions\, including the Philippines\, necessitates a robust and informed response from the healthcare community and the general populace. While the Department of Health (DOH) has clarified that the overall epidemic curve for mpox in the Philippines currently indicates a decline in new monthly cases\, particularly with the prevalent Clade II strain which is generally milder\, it is crucial to remain vigilant. Localized spikes and the continuous reporting of new infections\, even of the Clade II strain\, underscore the need for sustained awareness\, comprehensive understanding\, and effective public health strategies. Fatalities\, though rare\, have been observed\, primarily in immunocompromised individuals with underlying conditions such as advanced HIV\, highlighting the importance of integrated care and early identification of vulnerable populations.\n\nIn our episode this week\, we will discuss the nuanced clinical presentations of mpox\, differentiating it from other dermatological conditions that may present similarly\, such as varicella. The discourse will encompass the epidemiology of the disease\, including modes of transmission (more on close physical contact rather than airborne spread) and the importance of meticulous contact tracing. Crucially\, we will explore the evolving diagnostic modalities\, including RT-PCR testing and the current therapeutic landscape. In addition\, we will critically examine infection prevention and control measures applicable across various healthcare settings and within the community as we discuss practical insights into patient isolation protocols and public health advisories to mitigate further transmission.\n\nJoining us this week is Dr. Arthur Dessi E. Roman\, an infectious diseases expert from the UP-PGH Department of Medicine\, and Dr. Winlove P. Mojica\, who is the Chief of the Division of Infectious Dermatology at the UP-PGH Department of Dermatology.\n\nLet us all endeavor to fortify the Philippines’ capacity to manage mpox effectively\, reduce morbidity\, and safeguard public health. Together\, we can stop preventable deaths!

SUMMARY:"Unfree: Migrant Domestic Work in Arab States"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a public lecture\, “Unfree: Migrant Domestic Work in Arab States” on Wednesday\, May 28\, 2025\, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Pilar Herrera Lecture Hall (inside Palma Hall).\n\nWe are honored to host Professor Rhacel Salazar Parreñas of Princeton University\, a leading scholar in labor migration and gender studies.\nThe talk draws from ethnographic research in the Philippines and United Arab Emirates. It calls attention to the unfree status of migrant domestic workers as indentured laborers whose legal residency is tied to their continuous and sole employment for their sponsor. It shows how this unfree status results not in universal oppression but instead diverse labor conditions for domestic workers. The talk explains the resulting variations in labor conditions for unfree workers as it revisits theorizations of unfreedom.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public however\, the venue can only hold approximately 150 pax.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you there!\n\nSource: UP Diliman Department of Sociology Facebook

SUMMARY:Land\, Livelihood\, and Liminality: Interrogating Informal Settlement on the UP Diliman Campus
DESCRIPTION:DSD Lecture Series Presents:\nLand\, Livelihood\, and Liminality: Interrogating Informal Settlement on the UP Diliman Campus\n\nEveryone is invited to the lecture of Dr. Redento B. Recio on 23 May 2025\, 5:30 PM at the Bulwagang Tandang Sora\, UP CSWCD!\n\nThe event is in partnership with SD 303-304 Class\, 2nd Semester\, AY 24-25.\n\nSee you there!\n\n– – – – – – – –\n\n[Abstract]\nWho belongs in the university? This presentation offers a grounded\, preliminary investigation into the informal settlements within the UP Diliman campus. It unpacks the often-overlooked presence of informal settler communities composed of university staff\, students\, workers\, migrants\, and their families—groups whose everyday labor and lives are deeply entangled in the university’s daily operations and spatial development. These communities provide vital yet undervalued services: low-cost housing\, cheap labor\, affordable transport\, and retail support to the university and its neighboring districts.\n\nThe presentation examines the spatial conditions\, opportunities\, enduring challenges\, and uncertain futures faced by these communities. It also narrates how residents navigate their precarious condition through grassroots organizing\, rights-claiming\, and solidarity-based practices that challenge exclusionary ideas about belonging in a public university. In engaging with multidimensional issues of tenure insecurity\, livelihood precarity\, and housing rights\, the discussion calls for a reimagining of campus governance—one that foregrounds equity\, social inclusion\, and the broader social responsibilities of UP as the country’s national university.\n\nThe presentation ends with a provocation on the wider implications of engaging with informal settlement for grounded theorizing and for advancing emancipatory practices in urban social development.\n\nSource: College of Social Work and Community Development Facebook
