SUMMARY:Land\, Livelihood\, and Liminality: Interrogating Informal Settlement on the UP Diliman Campus
DESCRIPTION:DSD Lecture Series Presents:\nLand\, Livelihood\, and Liminality: Interrogating Informal Settlement on the UP Diliman Campus\n\nEveryone is invited to the lecture of Dr. Redento B. Recio on 23 May 2025\, 5:30 PM at the Bulwagang Tandang Sora\, UP CSWCD!\n\nThe event is in partnership with SD 303-304 Class\, 2nd Semester\, AY 24-25.\n\nSee you there!\n\n– – – – – – – –\n\n[Abstract]\nWho belongs in the university? This presentation offers a grounded\, preliminary investigation into the informal settlements within the UP Diliman campus. It unpacks the often-overlooked presence of informal settler communities composed of university staff\, students\, workers\, migrants\, and their families—groups whose everyday labor and lives are deeply entangled in the university’s daily operations and spatial development. These communities provide vital yet undervalued services: low-cost housing\, cheap labor\, affordable transport\, and retail support to the university and its neighboring districts.\n\nThe presentation examines the spatial conditions\, opportunities\, enduring challenges\, and uncertain futures faced by these communities. It also narrates how residents navigate their precarious condition through grassroots organizing\, rights-claiming\, and solidarity-based practices that challenge exclusionary ideas about belonging in a public university. In engaging with multidimensional issues of tenure insecurity\, livelihood precarity\, and housing rights\, the discussion calls for a reimagining of campus governance—one that foregrounds equity\, social inclusion\, and the broader social responsibilities of UP as the country’s national university.\n\nThe presentation ends with a provocation on the wider implications of engaging with informal settlement for grounded theorizing and for advancing emancipatory practices in urban social development.\n\nSource: College of Social Work and Community Development Facebook

JOSE M. ACUIN\nOtorlaryngologist – Head and Neck Surgeon & Chief Medical Officer\, Asian Hospital and Medical Center\n\nReactor:\nDR. ALVIN RAE F. CENINA\nAdult Neurologist and Dementia Specialist\, Section of Neurology\nDepartment of Neurosciences\nUP – Philippine General Hospital\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #239\nMay 23\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nUlyanin Na\, Pandinig Mahina Pa!\nProtect Your Hearing and Mind for Healthy Aging\n\nRecent epidemiological and longitudinal studies have illuminated a robust association between untreated hearing impairment and an increased risk of developing various forms of dementia\, including Alzheimer’s disease. This is not merely a correlational observation. Emerging research points towards plausible pathophysiological mechanisms\, including cognitive load theory\, social isolation\, and shared neuropathological pathways\, all contributing to an accelerated trajectory of cognitive decline in individuals with unmanaged hearing loss. Understanding these mechanisms is paramount for developing effective and comprehensive preventative interventions.\n\nIn this week’s episode\, our esteemed panel of speakers will present the most current scientific literature\, discuss diagnostic paradigms for both hearing loss and dementia\, and critically evaluate the efficacy of various interventions\, from early auditory rehabilitation to cognitive stimulation strategies. We will emphasize the actionable steps that we need to integrate into clinical practice to identify at-risk individuals and implement timely interventions. In addition\, we will discuss proactive measures we can undertake to safeguard auditory and cognitive health.\n\nOur main speaker this week is the Chief Medical Officer of Asian Hospital and Medical Center\, Dr. Jose M. Acuin. Our reactor is a practicing adult neurologist and dementia specialist from the UP-PGH Section of Neurology\, Dr. Alvin Rae F. Cenina.\n\nJoin us as we work towards contributing to a healthier\, more cognitively resilient Filipino society. Together\, we can stop preventable deaths!

SUMMARY:"The Challenges and Promises of Governance in the Philippines\, 1912-1925"
DESCRIPTION:The UP Department of History invites everyone to attend the lecture of Dr. Shelton Woods titled “The Challenges and Promises of Governance in the Philippines\, 1912-1925”.\n\n📅 Date: May 22\, 2025 (Thursday)\, 1:30 PM PST\n📍 Venue: Silid Balatik\, Pavilion 2\, Palma Hall\, University of the Philippines Diliman\n\n📝 Abstract:\nBetween 1912 and 1920\, Manila witnessed a radical shift in Philippine-American relations. For the first time in Philippine-American affairs\, a Democrat sat in America’s oval office. This led to the establishment of the Philippine Senate and the political triumvirate of Sergio Osmeña\, Manuel Quezon\, and Francis Burton Harrison. The experiment of joint rule came to an end with the 1921 Wood-Forbes Mission\, and the subsequent dysfunctional relationship between Senator Quezon and Governor General Leonard Wood. Their final showdown centered on the peoples of Luzon’s Cordillera mountains and the obscure but heroic figure of John Chrysostom Early.\n\n👤 About the Author:\nDr. Shelton Woods earned his PhD in Southeast Asian History from UCLA. He is the Distinguished Professor of Southeast Asian History and Associate Dean at Boise State University. The author of seven books\, his latest work is Governor of the Cordillera: John Early and the Philippine Highlanders (Cornell University Press and Ateneo University Press). Born in Manila\, Dr. Woods spent his first eighteen years in the city of Baguio. (sheltonwoods.com)\n\nSource: UP Departamento ng Kasaysayan Facebook

SUMMARY:POROHANON: Tangkang Paglalapat ng Ilang Kontemporanyong Teoryang Panggramatika sa Porohanon
DESCRIPTION:[Philippine Indigenous Languages Lecture Series]\nPOROHANON [prh]: Tangkang Paglalapat ng Ilang Kontemporanyong Teoryang Panggramatika sa Porohanon\n20 May | Tuesday | 1:00 PM\nCSSP Health & Wellness Center\n\nVincci Santiago\nAssistant Professor\nUP Department of Linguistics\n\n—\n\nThe fifth installment of the 2025 Philippine Indigenous Languages Lecture Series (PILLS) will be on Porohanon [prh]\, a language spoken on the Camotes Islands in Cebu.\n\n—\n\nAng papel na ito ay munting demonstrasyon sa paggamit ng ilang kontemporanyong teorya sa pagsusuri ng morposintaks ng Porohanon\, isang wikang primaryang sinasalita sa Munisipyo ng Poro\, mga Isla ng Camotes\, Lalawigan ng Cebu. UP Department of Linguistics Facebook

SUMMARY:Therapeutic Synergy: Investigating the Role of Client-Therapist Congruity and Complementarity on Alliance and Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Swak ba tayo? – 5:00 n.h.\, sa Lagmay Hall Room 304\, UP Diliman at FB Live. SUMMARY:"Edible Flora: Botanical Art Exhibition"
DESCRIPTION:A FEAST FOR THE EYES AND APPETITE! 🍽️🌺\n\nFlores de Mayo is still underway\, and the UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas is delighted to invite everyone to visit and view its latest temporary exhibit\, “Edible Flora\,” from May 19 to 30\, 2025.\n\nThe curatorial concept stems from the increasing gastronomic popularity of flowers. Not only do they make beautiful ornaments\, but they also provide health and nutritional benefits. For instance\, the pansit-pansitan or ulasimang bato (Peperomia pellucida) has been developed into a gout medication by UP Manila researchers. Meanwhile\, the katmon fruit (Dillenia philippinensis) can be used as a souring agent for dishes such as sinigang.\n\nCurated by Dr. Honey Libertine Achanzar-Labor\, Special Assistant to the Chancellor\, the exhibit features 32 paintings of edible flora by members of the Philippine Botanical Art Society (PhilBAS). The group was founded by UPM BA Philippine Arts alumna\, Ms. Bing Famoso\, with the mission to revive the botanical art style and to advocate for the conservation of our nation’s endemic plants.\nVisit the UPM-MHI now\, and perhaps you’ll try these flora for your next meal!\n\nOrganized by:\nPhilippine Botanical Art Society\nUP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas\nThe Faura Project\nSpecial thanks to:\nNational Commission for Culture and the Arts\n\nSource: UP Manila – Museum Of A History Of Ideas Facebook

SUMMARY:“Ghosts of Elections Past: A Few Historical Notes on the 2025 Midterm Elections”
DESCRIPTION:Join us in this forum on “Ghosts of Elections Past: A Few Historical Notes on the 2025 Midterm Elections” this May 16\, 2026 from 1:30 – 5:00 PM at the Performing Arts Hall (PAH)\, UP Cebu.\n\n➡️ Abstract\n\nThe political overdrive normal in electioneering in the Philippines shifted to hyperspace mode after the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte to face trial by the ICC in The Hague last March. Instead of attempting to keep pace with the light speed of the news cycle\, this talk looks back\, offering some historical perspective. Given Philippine midterms have often been judged in terms of national senate election results\, the results of these 2025 national elections will be examined as to whether they foreshadow “opposition” strength in the subsequent presidential election.\n\nPolitical splits between the country’s political number One and Two predate even the (procedurally quirky) separate election of the president and vice president back to the colonial era battle for supremacy between Manuel Quezon and Sergio Osmeña\, Sr. The Marcos-Duterte feud (which can be traced back to the 1967 midterms) may prove another occasion in which the underdog becomes a longer-term victor\, as Sara Duterte’s future presidential hopes remain very much alive despite the hyperpresidentialist advantage of the ruling Marcos dynasty.\n\nThe talk concludes with some thoughts about Cebu’s seemingly curious political evolution from a historically “yellow” anti-Marcos bastion to (briefly) a pro-Marcos constituency back to an anti-Marcos (but Duterte-sympathetic) stronghold.\n\nThe keynote speaker is Prof. Dr. Mark Thompson\, the Chair Professor in the Department of Public and International Affairs and former Director of the Southeast Asia Research Centre at the City University of Hong Kong – a globally renowned and respected scholar of political science and public administration.\n\nHe will be joined by Prof. Dr. Cleo Anne Calimbahin\, an esteemed Professor of political science specializing in elections\, corruption\, and democracy studies at De La Salle University- Manila\, noted for her contributions on understanding patronage politics and democracy\, as well as the nature and direction of the political parties in the Philippines.\n\n➡️ The forum is open to the public. BEAVER R. TAMESIS\nPresident and CEO\, Asian Hospital and Medical Center\n\nReactor:\nDR. JOHN D. AÑONUEVO\nChair and Cardiologist\, Department of Medicine\nUP – Philippine General Hospital\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #238\nMay 16\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nWhat Everyone Needs to Know About Atherosclerosis\nHindi Dapat Ito Ikamamatay\n\nThe escalating prevalence of atherosclerosis and its formidable cardiovascular sequelae represent a significant public health challenge in the Philippines. Frontline healthcare professionals are invariably at the forefront of managing and mitigating the impact of this insidious disease.\n\nIn this week’s episode\, our esteemed panel of experts will elucidate the intricate pathophysiology of atherosclerosis\, tracing its origins from endothelial dysfunction and lipid deposition to the eventual formation of obstructive plaques. We will also discuss the interplay of genetic predispositions\, dietary habits\, lifestyle factors\, and prevalent comorbidities such as hypertension\, diabetes mellitus\, and dyslipidemia that contribute to the heightened susceptibility of Filipinos to this condition.\n\nIn addition\, we will provide a practical and clinically relevant exploration of contemporary diagnostic modalities\, ranging from non-invasive assessments like lipid profiling and ankle-brachial index to advanced imaging techniques such as coronary computed tomography angiography. We will also discuss pharmacological interventions\, including the appropriate use of statins\, antiplatelet agents\, and emerging lipid-lowering therapies\, tailored to the specific needs and challenges faced by Filipino patients.\n\nLifestyle modifications\, encompassing dietary guidance rooted in local culinary traditions and culturally sensitive exercise recommendations\, will also be thoroughly discussed as integral components of both primary and secondary prevention. Focus on early risk stratification\, timely referral\, and the initiation of appropriate management strategies will also be included.\n\nOur main speaker this week is the multi-awarded President and CEO of Asian Hospital and Medical Center\, Dr. Beaver R. Tamesis. Our reactor is a practicing cardiologist and the Chair of the Department of Medicine at the Philippine General Hospital\, Dr. John D. Añonuevo.\n\nJoin us in working towards improving cardiovascular health outcomes for the Filipino people. Together\, we can stop preventable deaths.
