Characterized by deviations from the normal menstrual cycle in terms of regularity\, frequency\, duration\, or amount of bleeding\, AUB presents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for healthcare professionals.\n\nThis week’s episode will begin with a foundational understanding of normal menstrual physiology\, establishing a baseline for recognizing deviations that constitute AUB. We will learn about the different types of AUB\, including heavy menstrual bleeding (formerly menorrhagia)\, intermenstrual bleeding\, irregular bleeding\, and postmenopausal bleeding\, among others. We will discuss the importance of thorough patient history and physical examination in evaluating AUB\, emphasizing the role of specific diagnostic tools such as transvaginal ultrasound\, endometrial biopsy\, and hysteroscopy when clinically indicated. We will also cover the various potential causes of AUB\, ranging from structural abnormalities like uterine fibroids\, polyps\, and adenomyosis\, to hormonal imbalances\, coagulation disorders\, and even malignancies. In addition\, this educational activity will explore the range of treatment options available for AUB\, encompassing both medical and surgical approaches. We will talk about the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment modality\, empowering participants to make informed decisions in collaboration with their patients.\n\nOur main presenter is Dr. Teresa Diana B. Bongala\, who is an Assistant Professor II and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center. Each lecture focuses on how linguistics and pedagogical trends can be employed and adapted to fit the learning needs of Filipino students. Other practical applications of linguistic studies on Asian languages\, such as in translation\, interpretation\, learning materials development\, and language planning\, may also be covered in these lectures.\n\nFor the first installment of TAL 2025\, Senior Lecturer Mark Rae De Chavez will present on Korean grammar and loan paradigms.\n\nABSTRACT\nAccording to the US Foreign Service Institute\, Korean belongs to Category IV languages described as “super-hard language” to learn for English native speakers. This talk focuses on the linguistic aspect of learning Korean and its challenges to Filipino learners. Zulueta\, Ph.D. (Faculty of Sociology\, Toyo University)\nThis public lecture is co-hosted by UP KRC and UP CIS (UP Center for International Studies) in celebration of the UP CIS’ 25th anniversary.\nVenue: UP CIS Classroom C\, G/F Benton Hall\, UP Diliman\nDate & Time: 17 February 2025 (Monday) 10AM\n\nAbstract:\nThis study examines the experiences of migrants in South Korea as they reach their older years. In particular\, this research focuses on women from the Philippines who arrived in South Korea beginning in the early 1990s\, and are currently living in the country’s non-highly urbanised areas (rural and/or semi-rural areas). Most of these women came to the country as marriage migrants to Korean men living in these regions. Based on qualitative data gathered through interviews and fieldwork in selected areas in Chungcheongnam-do\, Jeollabuk-do\, and Gyeonggi-do in 2023-2024\, this study analyses ageing\, migration\, and social well-being from feminist and transnational perspectives.\n\nSpecifically\, this study explores these migrants’ perceptions of their ageing process outside their countries of birth\, as it relates to their own perceptions on social well-being—particularly its social and cultural aspects—as long-term migrants and members of so-called multicultural families (damunhwa kajok) in South Korea. It is argued here that the ageing experience of migration is gendered and intertwined with one’s own cultural and social capital. In addition\, language and communication\, one’s status of residence\, citizenship\, spirituality and religion\, and the presence or absence of family are also deemed significant. This study aims to shed light on the challenges that older female migrants in South Korea are facing as they navigate their own ageing along with societal changes in their host country.\n\nBionote:\nJohanna O. Zulueta is Professor of Sociology at the Faculty of Sociology of Toyo University\, Japan. She received her A.B. (Social Sciences) from the Ateneo de Manila University and her Ph.D. (Sociology) from Hitotsubashi University. She does research on migrations in East Asia\, looking at issues related to ethnicities\, military basing\, gender and families\, citizenship\, and aging. Her recent monograph is titled: Okinawan Women’s Stories of Migration: From War Brides to Issei (Routledge\, 2022).
