SUMMARY:"What’s (Not) In a Letter? Filipinx\, Coloniality\, and the Ontologics and Semiotics of Trans Erasure in Online Discourses"
DESCRIPTION:The Department of English and Comparative Literature invites everyone to Dr. Jennifer B. Delfino’s lecture entitled “What’s (Not) In a Letter? Filipinx\, Coloniality\, and the Ontologics and Semiotics of Trans Erasure in Online Discourses” on Mar. 18\, 10 AM via Facebook live.\n\nThough feminist and queer scholars have demonstrated that heteronormative ideologies of gender and sexuality are central to organizing colonial and postcolonial relations of power\, the analysis of such ideologies is virtually absent from work on language and colonialism\, as is the analysis of the forms of erasure undergirding this ideological work. Centering an analysis of the semiotics and ontologics of trans erasure in postcolonial subject-making\, this talk examines a subset of social media posts related to the 2021-2022 online “Filipinx controversy”\, which is a debate about the authenticity of ethnonyms Filipino versus Filipinx following the 2021 addition of Filipinx to Dictionary.com. Drawing from postcolonial semiotics (Reyes 2023) and trans linguistics (Zimman 2020)\, the talk discusses how idealized Filipino identity models reactivate colonial logics of racial\, gender\, and sexual difference via discourses of “raciolinguistic authenticity”\, a concept I propose to describe how raciolinguistic ideologies delimit the discursive construction of linguistic and cultural authenticity to heteronormative perceptions of ways of being and speaking.\n\nThe talk will critically examine Filipino discourses of raciolinguistic authenticity from a queer diaspora perspective that centers Filipinx experiences of erasure and transphobia amidst the predominance of claims in social media posts that Filipino is “already gender-neutral\,” which come not from Filipinos located in the Philippines\, but from cis straight Filipino Americans located in the United States. In highlighting the discursive circulation of anti-Filipinx stances online\, this talk interrogates postcolonial perspectives on queerness and transgender identities as exclusively “Western” phenomena that threaten to disrupt Filipino cultural and national authenticity.\n\nDr. Jennifer B. Delfino is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. A Filipino American born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area\, her research focuses on the impact of racialization\, gender\, and colonialism on the language practices of minoritized groups in the United States.\n\nShe is the author of Speaking of Race: Language\, Identity\, and Schooling Experiences Among African American Children and several peer-reviewed articles on linguistic and racial formations in liberal democracies. Her forthcoming research explores Ethnic Studies programs and heritage ideologies among Filipino Americans in higher education.\n\nSource: UPD Department of English and Comparative Literature Facebook

SUMMARY:"Labor market effects of artificial intelligence: Evidence from Philippine occupations"
DESCRIPTION:HAPPENING ON FRIDAY\, March 13\, 2026. 4:00 PM\, at the Judith R. Duavit-Vasquez and Class of 1984 Lecture Room (UPSE 105)\n\n🎓 UPSE-PCED Friday Seminar\, the second seminar in the series this March\, featuring researchers from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Research Academy.\n\n🧠📚💡Abstract: Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have elevated concerns about the impact of technological progress in the labor market\, especially the displacement of workers. This study examines the labor market effects of AI in the Philippines\, a developing country with significant engagement in cognitive services. To translate existing AI-related measures that were constructed using the O*NET database to the Philippine context\, we implement a two-step matching process: assessing semantic similarity between occupational task sets and performing manual review to ensure contextual consistency. We then estimate the long-difference regression between 2019 and 2024 of labor market outcomes on the AI occupational exposure measure.\n\nOverall\, we find that occupational exposure to AI is linked to lower real wage growth\, but it does not appear to have a significant relationship with employment growth and change in unemployment risk. However\, in occupations with low complementarity with AI\, greater exposure to AI is associated with lower employment growth and increased unemployment risk.\n\nLabor market outcomes connected to higher exposure to AI also vary by an occupation’s exposure to the IT-BPM sector. These findings highlight the heterogeneous effects of AI under nuanced labor market conditions in a developing economy. – with Ralph Joshua P. Mario R. Festin\nFounding Director\, Institute of Reproductive Health\nNational Institutes of Health\nUniversity of the Philippines Manila\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #277\nMarch 13\, 2026 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nIs My 16-Year Old At Risk for Pregnancy?\nFindings from National Research\n\nThe persistent challenge of adolescent gestation in the Philippines represents not merely a localized sociological concern but a multifaceted public health crisis that demands an integrated\, evidence-based clinical response. Frontline healthcare workers are indispensable in navigating the intricate biological and psychosocial landscapes associated with teenage pregnancy.\n\nIn this week’s episode\, we will attempt to dissect the current trajectory of adolescent maternal health within the Philippine archipelago. Our discussion will move beyond superficial statistics to address the physiological complexities of early-onset pregnancy\, including the heightened risks of pre-eclampsia\, systemic gestational hypertension\, and the long-term sequelae of adolescent pelvic disproportion. We will also explore the critical role of interdisciplinary collaboration in fostering a continuum of care that prioritizes patient autonomy and ethical counseling.\n\nThe urgency of this dialogue is underscored by the evolving digital landscape and its impact on health literacy among the youth. As we analyze the shifts in health-seeking behaviors\, our discussion will also encompass the implementation of youth-friendly health services and the optimization of referral pathways within the primary care network.\n\nOur main discussant is Dr. Mario R. Festin\, who is the Founding Director of the Institute of Reproductive Health of the National Institutes of Health\, University of the Philippines Manila. Join us as we synthesize clinical excellence with strategic communication to catalyze a more resilient and informed healthcare workforce. Together\, we can redefine the standard of care for the next generation\, ensuring that every encounter at the frontline of medicine becomes a pivotal moment for intervention\, education\, and holistic

SUMMARY:Kampihan Kung Kampihan: Ang Oposisyon\, ang Koalisyon\, at ang mga Tunguhin ng Demokrasyang Filipino
DESCRIPTION:The UP Third World Studies Center\, in collaboration with the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung Southeast Asia\, invites the public to Kampihan Kung Kampihan: Ang Oposisyon\, ang Koalisyon\, at ang mga Tunguhin ng Demokrasyang Filipino\, the fourth and final installment of the 2025-26 UP TWSC Francisco “Dodong” Nemenzo Jr. Public Forum Series: Bugso at Bisa ng Magkakasalungat na Pagkilos sa Demokrasya.\n\n📆 DATE: March 12\, 2026 (Thursday)\n⏰ TIME: 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM\n📍 VENUE: Pilar Herrera Lecture Hall\, Palma Hall\, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy\, University of the Philippines Diliman\n📝 REGISTER: https://bit.ly/TWSCKampihan\n\nAlliances and factions are strong political tools. The Dutertes and Marcoses not only continue to grow in popularity but also sustain their political legitimacy through the security granted by their allies and supporters. Despite its dissolution\, the UniTeam has shown the power of what a collaboration of forces can do. Beyond familial labels\, the Philippine government is built on the accumulation of elite interests\, networks\, and favors that mutated the country’s political culture into a nigh impenetrable elite-led democracy.\n\nTo combat this\, an opposition is therefore sought after. Ideally\, a unified one\, free from any ties to the country’s gluttonous oligarchy. A tall order for those already jaded and disillusioned by the outcomes of “tactical alliances.” Instead of realizing a solidified anti-elite opposition\, the best that has come from these progressive forces are fragmented movements and campaigns. With glaring symptoms such as the occurrence of splintered anti-corruption protests\, fractured support for candidates and parties\, disjunct EDSA commemorations\, as well as varying positions on the resignation of public officials\, a solidified opposition to lead popular democracy appears to be far from reach.\n\nNow that Sara Duterte has announced her bid for presidency\, the publics are on their toes to block the punisher’s clan from returning to Malacanang. Thus\, it appears that not only is a united opposition the only collective conundrum for Filipino progressives but so is the resolution for a mutually-agreed upon standardbearer that can trump the Dutertes in 2028.\n\nThe final installment of the 2025-2026 Francisco “Dodong” Nemenzo Jr. Public Forum Series confronts the troublesome predicament of opposition-building. The discussion raises the concerning question of how a corrupt system can be changed with a fragmented progressive opposition—an opposition that often treats its allies as rivals? Is a unified progressive coalition even possible in a symptomatically pluralistic political landscape? How can this fragmentation shape the political climate and democratic mobilization of 2026 going into the 2028 national elections? Who has authority in constructing the composition and goals of this coalition? Can the progressives progress from this dilemma? What would be the democratic agenda of this broad coalition of progressives?\n\nℹ️ Read more about the 2025-25 UP TWSC Francisco “Dodong” Nemenzo Jr. Public Forum here: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/16HRevt83h/\n\nSource: UP Twsc Facebook

SUMMARY:Villages on fire from the Revolution of 1896 to World War II
DESCRIPTION:The UP Department of History would like to invite everyone to attend the public lecture of Prof. Greg Bankoff\, Ph.D. (Ateneo de Manila University) entitled Villages on fire from the Revolution of 1896 to World War II. The lecture will be held on March 12\, 2026 (Thursday)\, 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM\, at the Silid Balatik\, Pav 2\, Palm Hall\, UP Diliman.\n\nREGISTER HERE:\nhttps://tinyurl.com/VillagesOnFire\n\nABSTRACT\nThe traditional Filipino house was well adapted to its environment—and dangerously flammable. Built of light materials and clustered into barrios\, villages burned quickly and often. A stray spark from a hearth\, a toppled oil lamp\, or a misfired firecracker could ignite an entire settlement. Many fires\, however\, were deliberate. Flame was a weapon of war\, used to intimidate\, punish\, or destroy. Hundreds of barrios were torched during the Spanish and Philippine–American Wars and again in World War II.\n\nYet despite their frequency\, village fires have left little historical trace. Drawing on the Historical Data Papers (1951)\, this study reconstructs a village fire regime shaped by combustible construction\, new technological sources of ignition\, and the recurrent weaponisation of fire. In contrast to the urban “fire gap\,” village fires did not decline but often intensified\, at times catalysing community renewal. Recognising village fire as a distinct category challenges Western fire typologies and broadens the environmental history of fire.\n\nSource: UP Departamento ng Kasaysayan Facebook
