SUMMARY:Unfolding (언폴딩) Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Unfolding (언폴딩)\nInhwan Oh and Kyungmook Kim\nPreview on 14 December 2024\, on view until 22 February 2025\n1/F Galleries\nUP Vargas Museum\n\nThe UP Vargas Museum\, together with the Ministry of Culture\, Sports\, and Tourism of the Republic of Korea\, the Korea Arts Management Service\, and the Fund for Korean Art Abroad\, presents the exhibition of works by artists Inhwan Oh and Kyungmook Kim organized by Dominic Mangila. Unfolding (언폴딩) considers the experiences of two artists who embody othered identities in a society largely devoted to masculine ideals. Inhwan Oh and Kyungmook Kim unpack vignettes of life in South Korea as members of the LGBTQIA+ community in film and video works\, and through art that engages labor and marks processes.\n\nThrough them\, they summon the worlds of prisons and places of incarceration juxtaposed with spaces of freedom and gaiety– to discover and mark a social identity that refuses to settle with the laws and sanctions of a patriarchal nation.\n\nUnfolding (언폴딩) will be on view at the 1/F Galleries of the UP Vargas Museum starting 14 December 2024. Write to vargasmuseum@up.edu.ph for details and related information. The museum is located inside the University of the Philippines Diliman Campus and is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays except holidays\, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.\n\nFor updates on events\, exhibitions\, and advisories check our socials on Facebook\, Instagram\, or Twitter @upvargasmuseum.\n\n__________________________\nAbout the artist\n\nInhwan Oh\n\nInhwan Oh (b. 1965) is Associate Professor at the Department of Painting of the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University. His participatory works and site-specific projects contextualize a particular space and time and seek to dismantle the cultural codes formed in the relationship between the identities of individuals and groups within a patriarchal society. Some of his more recent solo exhibitions were held at the Smith Gallery of Davidson College in North Carolina (2019)\, BAIK ART in Los Angeles\, California (2019)\, and Bongsan Cultural Center\, South Korea (2018) He recently participated in group exhibitions at the Arsenale in Venice\, Italy (2019) and at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Gwacheon\, South Korea (2018). He was a recipient of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and SBS Foundation’s Korea Artist Prize in 2015.\nKyungmook Kim\nKyungmook Kim’s (b. 1985) video art\, documentary\, and narrative films expand the form of cinema by exploring the precarity of the marginalized such as homosexuals\, transsexuals\, sex workers\, and North Korean defectors. He made his directorial debut with Me and Doll-playing in 2004. Some of his other notable films include his Things Trilogy (2005-2014)\, A Cheonggyecheon Dog (2008)\, and Grace Period (2015). His films have been selected for and received awards in international film festivals such as the Venice Film Festival the BFI London Film Festival\, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Among his awards include the Idea Generation Grant of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2019)\, The Association of Korean Independent Film & Video’s Indie Filmmaker of the Year Award (2014)\, and Muju International Film Festival’s Best Director Award (2014).\n_________________________\nAbout the museum\n\nThe University of the Philippines Jorge B. SUMMARY:Depoliticisation is Disaster Risk Creation: Insights on Non-government Organisations’ Disaster Prevention and Humanitarian Response in the Philippines
DESCRIPTION:In the Philippines\, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) address disaster risk through disaster prevention and humanitarian response. NGOs\, however\, are subjected to political persecution and violence because of their critical stance on social issues and government policies and actions that contribute to disaster risk. They face a dilemma: Commit to their stance and be subjected to persecution and violence or depoliticise approach and be able to continue their services.\n\nFor the final talk in the Heo/Geo Lecture Series for 2024 and jointly presented by the Philippine Geographical Society (PGS) and the UP Department of Geography\, Dr Jake Rom Cadag analyses the political persecution and violence among NGOs engaged in disaster prevention and humanitarian response in the country through 24 key-informant interviews and a review of secondary sources. Entitled Depoliticisation is disaster risk creation: insights on non-government organisations’ disaster prevention and humanitarian response in the Philippines\, the lecture happens on Friday\, 6 December 2024 at 5:30PM via Zoom.\n\nIn Dr Cadag’s research\, the study finds that NGOs depoliticise their approach by focusing on hazard-centric programs\, habitually forsaking humanitarian principles\, and self-censoring and toning down public engagement. This study argues that depoliticisation is denying society safeguards against disasters associated with natural and social hazards\, which lead to persistence and creation of disaster risks.\n\nJake Rom D. Cadag is Associate Professor of Geography at the University of the Philippines Diliman. His professional and research interests include disaster risk reduction\, climate change adaptation\, rural and urban studies\, and participatory mapping. He is skilled in community work and the use of participatory methods and tools involving various stakeholders\, including marginalized groups.\n\nThe Heo/Geo lecture is part of the ongoing 40th anniversary celebration of the UP Department of Geography (1983-2023) which simultaneously serves and provides a space where practical\, discursive and embodied discussions and performativities from academic geographers\, practitioners and civil society can come together and thrive. This talk is sponsored by the Geographies of Disasters and Hazards (G-DASH) research group of the UP Department of Geography in line with the sustainable development goals #10 (Reduced inequalities)\, #11 (Sustainable cities and communities)\, and #13 (Climate action).\n\nTo participate in the Zoom lecture\, please click this link or just copy and paste this link in your browser: https://tinyurl.com/3948am3m\n\nSource: UP Department of Geography Facebook
