SUMMARY:Stop COVID Deaths Webinar #112 “NUTRISYON SA PANAHON NG PANDEMYA: Can 250 pesos a day feed a family?”
DESCRIPTION:The University of the Philippines in partnership with\nUP Manila NIH National Telehealth Center and in cooperation with\nUP Philippine General Hospital\nwould like to invite you to join the Fight Against COVID-19! \n  \nRegistration slots are limited to this SPECIAL EDITION of\nthe STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS Webinar Series.\n(Current COVID-19 problems; Other outbreaks; Viruses; Infections; Disasters)\nSo sign up NOW:\nbit.ly/StopCOVIDDeathsWebinar112 \n  \nWebinar #112\nAugust 12\, 2022 (Friday) 12nn\n“NUTRISYON SA PANAHON NG PANDEMYA: Can 250 pesos a day feed a family?”\n\nPresenters:\nDr. Cecilia Cristina S. Acuin\nAdjunct Associate Professor\nInstitute of Human Nutrition and Food\nUniversity of the Philippines Los Baños\n\nMa. Eloisa E. Villaraza RND\, MSCN\nNutrition Consultant\nVice President\nNutritionist-Dietitians’ Association of the Philippines\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #112\nAugust 12\, 2022\n“NUTRISYON SA PANAHON NG PANDEMYA: Can 250 pesos a day feed a family?”\n\nWe can all feel the pinch of high food prices. Will this lead to more malnutrition in our country?\n\nMalnutrition in the Philippines has been a chronic\, silent and insidious threat to health and development. Malnourished children in particular are prone to infections and a vicious cycle of disease and further malnutrition.\n\nPre-pandemic it was estimated that 30 percent of children under 5 years of age were stunted – not tall enough for their age. Other countries with similar levels of income have rates of stunting averaging around 20 percent of children under 5 years of age. The Philippines ranks among the top ten countries globally with the highest number of stunted children.\n\nIn some parts of the country\, stunting is beyond 40 percent of children under five years of age: Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM)\, Mimaropa\, Bicol\, and Western Visayas. In rural areas\, children are more likely to be stunted than their urban counterparts.\n\nThe pandemic has made this situation worse.\n\nWhat is the nutritional status of the country today? Why are prices of food so high? How can the average family survive in an environment where good food is limited and unaffordable?\n\nThe lockdowns in the early part of the pandemic\, loss of jobs\, disruptions in the food supply chains for both locally produced and imported food\, limited food access\, delays in distribution of “ayuda” — all contributed to greater food insecurity throughout the country. With the war raging in Ukraine\, prices of food have skyrocketed. Studies show that households spend about 50% of income on food. If the minimum wage is about P500\, can a family still consume nutritious food on a budget of 250 pesos per day?\n\nIn this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS\, we will take a closer look at the problem of malnutrition against the backdrop of the COVID19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Our experts\, Dr. Cecilia Cristina S. Acuin\, one of the most well-known specialists in nutrition and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the UPLB Institute of Human Nutrition and Food\, will discuss the overall problem of malnutrition in the country\, the importance of the first 1000 days of life and overall policies and programs that seek to improve nutrition and well-being. She will also discuss why prices of food are high as well as general principles to promote better eating choices\, using a food systems framework. Our second speaker\, Ma. Eloisa E. Villaraza\, RND\, MSCN\, Vice President of the Nutritionist – Dietitians’ Association of the Philippines (NDAP)\, will provide us with practical advise on nutritional requirements through different stages of human development and tips on how to stretch the household budget to make sure that nutritional needs are met — despite the high cost of food.\n\nJoin us as we explore ways of preventing hunger and promoting health through better information about nutrition. You heard it first on STOP COVID DEATHS\, your credible on-line community!\n\nTogether\, we can STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS!

Chiong\nDean\nCollege of Medicine\nUniversity of the Philippines Manila\n\nReactor:\nDr. Erasmo Gonzalo D.V. Llanes\nDirector\nPhilippine National Ear Institute\nUP Manila National Institutes of Health\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #114\nAugust 26\, 2022\n“THE SILENT EPIDEMIC OF DEAFNESS: Dumadami ba ang nabibingi?”\n\nThe World Health Organization estimates that about 430 million people or 5% of the world’s population require rehabilitation to address hearing disability. The University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery reported in 2020 that the prevalence of moderate to severe hearing loss in the Philippines is 15%.\n\nWhy are more people becoming deaf in the Philippines?\n\nThe risk for deafness is from womb to tomb. Genetic factors – hereditary and non-hereditary causes are a risk. Infections during pregnancy like rubella are still a problem despite the availability of vaccines. Chronic ear infections among children can result in future hearing loss when not properly treated. There has been increasing concern about deafness due to the risk of permanent\, avoidable hearing loss from unsafe listening practices among 1 billion young adults. Exposure to work-related chemicals\, constant exposure to loud noise and loud sounds\, as well as trauma to the ear or head can cause deafness. Among adults and seniors\, chronic diseases\, smoking\, viral infections and certain drugs and medicines can cause deafness and hearing loss.\n\nDeafness has many serious effects. Among children this is an impediment to learning and emotional development. Among adults this can lead to social isolation\, loneliness and stigma. Among seniors\, more recent research published in the Lancet 2020\, reports that hearing loss is one of the top risk factors for dementia.\n\nHow can we tell if a patient is suffering from hearing loss? Can this be detected in young children? What are the red flags to alert a mother that a child may be deaf? How can we tell if an older person is becoming deaf? Is it “normal” for older persons to lose their sense of hearing?\n\nIn this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS\, we take on a neglected and poorly understood epidemic that has been silently affecting millions of Filipinos. Dean Charlotte Chiong of the UP College of Medicine\, one of the country’s leading experts in deafness will discuss the landscape for deafness in the Philippines and how frontline workers can support efforts to prevent deafness and early detection. Philippine National Ear Institute Director Erasmo Gonzalo Llanes will discuss practical tips on how to prevent hearing loss among Filipinos.\n\nJoin your credible on-line community as we unpack the barriers to addressing the epidemic of deafness in the Philippines.\n\nTogether\, we can STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS!
