DESCRIPTION:The University of the Philippines in partnership with\nUP Manila NIH National Telehealth Center and in cooperation with\nUP Philippine General Hospital\nwould like to invite you to join the Fight Against COVID-19! \n  \nRegistration slots are limited to this SPECIAL EDITION of\nthe STOP C.O.V.I.D. Ronquillo\nPresident\, Batangas State University\nPresident\, Philippine Association of\nState Universities and Colleges (PASUC)\n\nFrancie Castaneda-Lacanilao\nOwner\nThe Learning Tree\n\nSr. Christine Pinto\nPresident\nSt. Scholastica’s College Manila\n\nProf. Maria Cristina Damasco-Padolina\nPresident and Chief Academic Officer\nCentro Escolar University\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #115\nSeptember 2\, 2022\n“MAY COVID-19 ANG KLASMEYT NG ANAK KO: Is it safe for my child to go back to school?”\n\nBy November 2022\, 27 million registered students are expected to head back to face-to-face learning. Currently\, around 24\,000 of the country’s public schools – or just less than half – will implement five days of face-to-face classes. The rest are still in hybrid mode.\n\nParents have had mixed feelings about this. The Philippines has been one of the countries with the longest lockdown of schools in the world. Some are excited for their kids to feel “normal” again – others feel that the benefit of socialization does not outweigh the risk brought by possible exposure and infection to COVID19 – not to mention concerns about long COVID in children\n\nMuch of the confusion is relative to varying advise and protocols coming from different experts particularly around common questions: If a classmate is sick should my child be isolated? How long? If a child has interacted unknowingly with a COVID19 (+) classmate\, what is the next step? Who pays for testing? Are there isolation facilities in the school? If my child continues to have a COVID19 (+) test 14 days after the start of symptoms can the child go back to school?\n\nIn this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS\, we will take a look at questions around exposure of chidlren and how this is to be managed without anxiety and panic. Lead presentor is Dr. Anna Ong-Lim\, a Pediatric Infectious Diseases Consultant at the Philippine General Hospital. Group of panelists representing different types of schools are as follows: (1) Prof. Tirso A. Ronquillo\, PhD – President of Batangas State University and Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges\, (2) Francie Castaneda-Lacanilao – owner of The Learning Tree\, (3) Sr. Christine Pinto – President of St. Scholastica’s College Manila\, and (4) Prof. Maria Cristina Damasco-Padolina\, PhD – President and Chief Academic Officer of Centro Escolar University. Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Carmencita D. Padilla\, Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Manila.\n\nJoin our on-line credible community and find out what parents need to know about COVID-19 infections from school.\n\nTogether\, we can STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS!

Padilla\nChancellor\nUniversity of the Philippines Manila\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #116\nSeptember 9\, 2022\nSUFFERING IN SILENCE: Ang banta ng “Long COVID”\n\nWhy do some people experience bothersome symptoms of COVID long after they are infected? There are reports of people who suffer silently\, not even realizing that their chronic problems are related to a COVID-19 infection many months before.\n\nWhat do we know about “Long COVID” also known as\, long-haul COVID\, post-acute COVID-19\, post-acute sequelae of SARS CoV-2 infection (PASC)\, long-term effects of COVID\, and chronic COVID? Post-COVID conditions can be continuing or on-going and can last for weeks\, months\, and even longer.\n\nAccording to the US CDC: “Post-COVID conditions are found more often in people who had severe COVID-19 illness\, but anyone who has been infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 can experience post-COVID conditions\, even people who had mild illness or no symptoms from COVID-19.” In some instances\, the patients may have never tested positive for COVID.\n\nUnvaccinated people seem to be at a higher risk of developing post-COVID conditions compared to people who were vaccinated and had breakthrough infections. The effect of Long COVID on mental health and suicide risk has been reported and is being closely monitored by researchers and experts. COVID-19 survivors may experience persistent psychiatric symptoms like depression\, anxiety\, PTSD\, and cognitive impairment or “brain fog”. Studies point to symptoms of psychiatric\, neurological and physical illnesses\, as well as inflammatory damage to the brain in individuals with post-COVID syndrome that tends to increase suicidal ideation and behavior in groups at risk due to underlying co-morbidities.\n\nIn this episode of STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS\, join us as we do a deep dive into Long COVID – what it feels like\, what we need to understand\, what we can do to help those who suffer in silence from the long-term debilitating effects of COVID-19. We will listen to a survivor of COVID-19: award-winning journalist\, Büm Tenerio Jr. Then our two panelists: Dr. Regina P. Berba\, Head of the PGH Hospital Infection Control Unit and Dr. Jubert Benedicto\, Head of the CCU Management Action Team at the UP Philippine General Hospital will open the floor for an in-depth discussion.\n\nJoin us as we dive deeply into Long COVID and learn what you can do to stay safe!\n\nTogether\, we can STOP C.O.V.I.D. Bagasao\nProject Director\, Meeting Targets and Achieving Epidemic Control (EpiC)- HIV\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #117\nSeptember 16\, 2022\nHIV sa Panahon ng COVID-19\n\nWhen the first published report of what would ultimately become known as HIV and AIDS appeared in June 1981\, very little was known about the disease. It did not have a name\, it was not clear what caused it – there were no tests or treatment. Patients died within a few months.\n\nThe human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) targets the immune system and weakens people’s defense against many infections and some types of cancer.\n\nThe most advanced stage of HIV infection is acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)\, which can take many years to develop if not treated\, depending on the individual. AIDS is defined by the development of certain cancers\, infections or other severe long-term clinical manifestations.\n\nHIV is a major global public health issue\, having claimed 40.1 million lives since 1981.\n\nPrior to the COVID-19 pandemic\, the Philippines had one of the highest rates of increase in HIV in this part of the world.\n\nWhat happened during the pandemic? Did cases increase or decrease? Were HIV patients able to receive treatment and care during the lockdowns? These days\, who are most at risk for HIV in the Philippines?\n\nIn this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS\, we will take a closer look at an epidemic that occurred prior to and continued during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a reminder and a wake-up call to invest in prevention and public education as well as services for other types of infections\, not just COVID-19.\n\nWhat should our frontline workers know about HIV and COVID-19? What kind of advice can be given to patients who are HIV positive? What is the status of treatment and drugs and medicines? How are young people being continuously engaged in prevention?\n\nOur experts include: Dr. Sybil Lizanne R. Bravo\, Division Chief of Infectious Disease and Clinical Associate Professor with the Dept of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the UP College of Medicine; and Dr. Kate Leyritana\, Medical Director of the Sustained Health Initiatives of the Philippines. Our reactors include: Dr. Ricardo Manalastas\, Jr.\, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of the Philippines Manila; and Teresita Marie P. Bagasao\, Project Director of Meeting Targets and Achieving Epidemic Control (EpiC)- HIV.\n\nWe will also feature the most recent information on HIV\, prevention\, treatment and new literature. We will talk about who is at risk and will also view materials from a recent media campaign.\n\nJoin us as we learn more about infections!\n\nTogether\, we can STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS!
