SUMMARY:Archival Storage in Digital Preservation
DESCRIPTION:Happy International Archives Week!\n\nBackground\n(https://www.ica.org/…/about-international-archives-week/)\n\nArchives and archivists play an important role in accountability\, transparency\, democracy\, heritage\, memory and society.\nAt the 2004 International Congress in Vienna\, the 2\,000 participants in attendance adopted a resolution requesting that the United Nations (UN) designate a specific day to mark the importance and value of archives.\n\nIn 2005\, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) declared 27 October to be the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (WDAH) during the 33rd session of its General Conference held in Paris\, France. WDAH offers an opportunity to spread awareness of the need to take urgent measures and acknowledge the importance of audiovisual documents as part of our shared heritage and memory. However\, audiovisual documents are only a relatively small part of our documentary heritage that deserves international attention.\n\nIt was decided at the 2007 ICA Annual General Meeting that 9 June would be celebrated as International Archives Day (IAD). This date was\nselected to commemorate the day in 1948 on which ICA was created under the auspices of UNESCO.\n\nOne year later\, the first International Archives Day celebrations were staged to coincide with the 60th Anniversary of ICA. However\, it was not until 2019 that the ICA expanded the event to extend over an entire week.\n\nArchives and Records Management in the PHilipines\nThe University of the Philippines has offered courses on General Palaeography and Archives Administration since 1954. More and more archives courses were offered over the succeeding years such that archives and records management became a study track in our BLIS and MLIS programmes. In 2021\, the Master in Archives and Records Management (MARM) program was instituted as the first and only graduate program on recordkeeping in the Philippines.\n\nExplore the wealth of knowledge you can unlock in our MARM programme in this sneak peak of the lectures on archival storage from our ARM 221 Digital Preservation course in celebration of #IAW2024 #cyberarchives #Ciberarchivos. The online lecture will be held on Friday\, June 7th from 12:00nn to 1:30pm GMT+8.\n\nAre you ready for class? This is the power of kangaroo mother care. Kangaroo mother care or KMC is a practice where a newborn receives skin-to-skin contact with a caregiver\, is a cornerstone of neonatal care. But KMC is not just about skin-to-skin contact. It is about creating a haven for your tiniest patients.\n\nIn this week’s webinar\, we will talk about the science behind KMC\, specifically its impact on preterm and low-birth-weight infants. We will talk about how KMC optimizes thermoregulation\, respiratory stability\, lactation success\, and neurodevelopment. We will also examine the latest research on initiating KMC\, optimal positioning techniques\, and overcoming implementation hurdles. By the end of this webinar\, we hope the audience will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to confidently integrate KMC into their practice\, fostering the best possible outcomes for vulnerable newborns.\n\nOur main presenter is Dr. Maria Esterlita V. Uy\, who is currently the Director of the Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the UP Manila – National Institutes of Health. Our reactor is Dr. Fay de Ocampo\, who is a practicing neonatologist from the Division of Newborn Medicine\, UP-PGH Department of Pediatrics.\n\nImagine the impact we can have together\, fostering optimal outcomes and a nurturing environment for every newborn in our care!\n\nTogether\, we can stop preventable deaths.

SUMMARY:2024 SLIS Summer Institute
DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to attend the 2024 SLIS Institute on Information Organisation for Archives and Libraries on 18-20 June 2024 at the UP SOLAIR\, Diliman\, Quezon City.\n\nNew mechanisms for representing information relationships have become available in today’s digital environments. This marks a shift from hierarchical structures to semantic relationships documented through Linked Open Data. Linked data enables the documentation of information content and context through the use of technologies such as Resource Description Framework and Web Ontology Language. By interlinking databases\, linked open data facilitates resource discovery to a wider audience\, opening up the collections of archives and libraries to more users.\n\nThe 2024 SLIS Summer Institute will introduce the new ICA Records in Contexts (RiC) standard for archival description\, which formally replaced and consolidated the old ISAD(G)\, ISAAR-CPF\, ISDF\, and ISDIAH last November 2023\, as well as the IFLA Library Reference Model for expressing bibliographic description through the unification of FRBR\, FRAD\, and FRSAD.\n\nBy the end of the program\, participants should be able to:\n\n1) Understand core concepts in semantics.\n2) Understand the entities of RiC-CM and IFLA LRM.\n3) Create semantic descriptions for RiC-CM and IFLA LRM using Web Ontology Language (OWL) and the Resource Description Framework (RDF).\n\nThe Summer Institute is open to everyone. PRC-registered librarians may earn up to 21 CPD points. Participants may also request letters of invitation through cpe@slis.upd.edu.ph.\n\nRegister online at https://librarybayanihan.helixpay.ph/ or in person for cash payments at the SLIS office in UP SOLAIR Room 2.\n\nSource: UPSLIS Facebook
