SUMMARY:Writing the Life of a European Cultural Mediator: Bringing Barbara Bray (1924-2010) Out of the Archives
DESCRIPTION:DEL-dalan 2025: Seminars on ‘European’ Languages\, Literatures and Cultures\n\nWriting the Life of a European Cultural Mediator: Bringing Barbara Bray (1924-2010) Out of the Archives (Prof. Dr. Pascale Sardin\, University of Bordeaux Montaigne\, France)\n\nTo register\, please click on the following link: https://forms.gle/QTcQRTMKEzD4ndsTA\n\nABSTRACT: Barbara Bray (1924-2010) was an English woman of letters who translated some hundred novels\, plays\, and essays from French to English and was Marguerite Duras’s preferred translator. She also collaborated with some of the most prestigious directors and playwrights of the 20th century — Harold Pinter\, Samuel Beckett\, Joseph Losey\, and Franco Zeffirelli. In addition\, she produced shows for BBC radio\, was a journalist and critic\, and cofounded a bilingual theatre company.\n\nIn this presentation\, I propose to reflect upon what motivated me to write a literary biography of this woman of letters. I propose to highlight\, in doing so\, the role Bray played as a cultural mediator in the Anglophone and Francophone literary fields in the second half of the 20th century. I will focus on how she made European cultural products circulate inside and outside European borders\, and the kind of “transtextual” work this involved\, thus putting forward her different skills\, as well as the influence she had in cultural transfers of ideas.\n\nPRESENTER’S BIO: Pascale Sardin is Professor of English Literature and Translation Studies at the University of Bordeaux Montaigne University in France\, where she teaches in the English and Theatre departments. She is the author of several books on Samuel Beckett\, and has edited two volumes of the journal ‘Palimpsestes’ (Presses de la Sorbonne Nouvelle). She has just completed a literary biography of Barbara Bray\, entitled “Barbara Bray\, A Woman of Letters: Translator\, Radio Producer\, Scriptwriter\, Critic\, and Theatre Director” (Routledge).\n\nSource: UPD Department of European Languages Facebook

SUMMARY:PHILIPPINE HOKKIEN: THEN AND NOW
DESCRIPTION:PHILIPPINE HOKKIEN: THEN AND NOW\nLinguistics Special Lecture Series (LSLS) 2025 No. 1\n05 March | Wednesday | 1:00 PM\nCSSP Health and Wellness Center\n\nThe Linguistics Special Lecture Series (LSLS) features talks by invited experts on various topics under the fields of theoretical and applied linguistics.\n\nFor the first installment of LSLS 2025\, UP Diliman BA Lingg alum\, and now doctoral researcher in Asian studies at the Humboldt University of Berlin\, John Oliver Monghit\, will give a talk on Philippine Hokkien.\n\nABSTRACT\nThis presentation discusses the evolution of Philippine Hokkien\, the language of the majority of Filipino-Chinese. The Philippines and China share a long history of trade and commerce\, and a number of Chinese traders (called Sangleyes) settled in the archipelago. During the Spanish colonial period\, missionaries learned their language to facilitate evangelization\, which resulted in the creation of philological materials such as grammars and dictionaries for Philippine Hokkien.\n\nThe content of these sources will be compared to Proto-Southern Min reconstructed by Kwok (2018) and modern Philippine Hokkien data. Through this approach\, how the Hokkien language in the Philippines has developed is presented\, and which features (especially phonological) have changed are enumerated. On another note\, a few Hokkien loanwords in Tagalog have been revisited and reassessed.\n\nBIONOTE\nJohn Oliver Monghit is a doctoral researcher in Asian Studies at the Humboldt University of Berlin. He obtained a BA in linguistics at the University of the Philippines Diliman and an MA in Chinese language and literature at Hanyang University. Throughout his academic career\, he was awarded fully funded scholarships by the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC)\, the National Institute for International Education (NIIED-GKS)\, and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).\n\nHe has previously worked on Tagalog dialectology\, grammaticalization\, and Sino-Korean phonology\, while his current research focuses on Philippine Hokkien.\n\nSource: UP Department of Linguistics Facebook

SUMMARY:45th Gabriel A. Bernardo Memorial Lecture with Amy VanScoy\, MLIS\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Gabriel Adriano Bernardo was aptly called the doyen of Filipino librarians because of his dedication to the profession which endured for almost half a century. He served as the first Chief Librarian of the University of the Philippines where he also started as a lecturer in library science in 1920 and rose to the rank of full professor in 1935. He retired in 1957 as Emeritus Librarian and Professor of Library Science. A conscientious and devoted scholar\, Professor Bernardo was an eminent bibliographer of Filipiniana and an internationally recognized authority of Philippine and Indonesian folklore.\n\nAfter his death in 1962\, colleagues heralded him as a leading figure in the field describing him as a “man of culture with an unquenchable bibliographical thirst (Marina Dayrit)\,“ a burning passion for the ideals and accomplishments of scholarship\, (Lee Ash)”\, “ a nobleman with an innate modesty” (Carlos P. Romulo)”\, “a highly principled man (Alfredo Roces)”\, “unassuming\, quiet manner belied his erudition (Mauro Garcia)”\, “with a scholarly vision (E. Arsenio Manuel)” “with unobtrusive solitude and quiet sincerity\, tireless\, unyielding\, uncompromising in his idealism (Tomas Fonacier)” “A full life lived with high and noble purpose” (Solomon V. Arnaldo)\, “meticulous to the point of perfection” and many more. His impact remains invaluable and his life continues to to inspire generations of information professionals that came after him.\n\nAs a tribute to this great man\, the U.P. School of Library and Information Studies in 1974 initiated a memorial lecture series in his honor. Since then\, an annual lecture has been given by leading scholars and practitioners of the profession and in allied fields. The GAB Memorial Lecture is the premier and longest running lecture series in the Philippines pertaining to library and information studies.\nNow on its 45th year\, the lecture continues to celebrate the life\, work\, and vision of Gabriel A. Bernardo.\n\n1 Vallejo\, R.M.(2007). Looking back while traveling into the future: The legacy of Gabriel A. Bernardo: A man for all time. Journal of Philippine Librarianship\, 27(1&2) Delivered at the 28th Gabriel A. Bernardo Memorial Lecture Series held at the UPILIS\, Diliman\, Quezon City on March 14\, 2007.\n\n45th Gabriel A. Bernardo Memorial Lecturer\nAmy VanScoy\, MLIS\, PhD\n\nAmy VanScoy is an associate professor in the Department of Information Science at the University at Buffalo. As a former librarian\, VanScoy’s research is centered at the intersection of theory and practice. She works to understand reference and information service practice at a conceptual level and to identify how formal theory is used by librarians in their work. Guided by her values for diversity\, equity\, and inclusion\, as well as a global perspective\, VanScoy aims to raise awareness of the important\, complex\, and often undervalued work that librarians do to support individuals and communities. VanScoy’s research has been funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the American Library Association and published in Library & Information Science Research\, Journal of Documentation\, and Library Quarterly. She presents at national and international conferences. She enjoys exploring new research methods and working with international collaborators.\n\nLecture Abstract\n\nThe Theory/Practice G̶a̶p̶ Link: Changing the Narrative about Theory in Library and Information Science\n\nTheory is a term that tends to divide us: practitioners versus researchers and students versus educators. We repeat and reinforce the narrative of the intractable “theory/practice gap”. However\, this gap might not be the wide gulf that we believe it to be. In fact\, theory could be a concept that unifies us\, helping us to create strong links between practitioners and researchers. Drawing on findings from my research and insights from fellow librarians and scholars\, I challenge the narrative of the theory/practice gap and position theory as a unifying concept for our discipline.\n\nThis event is free and open to all. You may register at https://tinyurl.com/GAB2025.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you there!\n\nSource: 45th Gabriel A. Bernardo Memorial Lecture Facebook Event Page

SUMMARY:“Elephant Clocks and Stuttering Parrots: Art\, Automation\, and Artificial Intelligence”
DESCRIPTION:THIS WEDNESDAY AT PAROLA 💡\n\n“Elephant Clocks and Stuttering Parrots: Art\, Automation\, and Artificial Intelligence”\nA Lecture by Dr. Gunalan Nadarajan\, University of Michigan\n\nWhile historical and contemporary discussions of automation and artificial intelligence have primarily focused on its technological instantiations\, specifically on its mechanical and industrial instances\, it is useful to understand automation as embedded in and programmed into practices\, discourses\, and materialities that are sometimes ‘non-technological. ’\n\nDr. Nadajaran’s talk proposes that automation be (re)conceived in an expanded way as a constellation of elements through which cultures are produced and structured to predispose specific behaviors and material effects; as structures and programs for the deferral of decisions and actions. It provides an abbreviated genealogy of automation by excavating the historical and culturally specific technological devices\, industrial machinations\, and technical discourses that have come to be associated with automation\, and as these are tempered by the changing philosophical\, neurological\, psychological\, legal\, and ethical conceptions of human agency. It proposes that artistic explorations of automation and AI show us ways of imagining and acting to ethically restitute agency back to humans.\n\nAbout the speaker\n\nGunalan Nadarajan\, an art theorist and curator working at the intersections of art\, science\, and technology\, is Dean Emeritus and Professor at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan.\n\nMarch 12 (Wednesday)\, 10:00 – 11:30 A.M.\nAtrium and Gallery Lobby\n\nFREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC\nRegistration starts at 9:30 A.M. SUMMARY:“Engaged Anthropology: Can Archaeologists Engage?”
DESCRIPTION:Is there an archaeology beyond discoveries\, research\, and publications?\n\nWhile archaeologists deal with the lives and cultures of those long gone\, we need to acknowledge we aren’t isolated from the communities of the living. Whether residing by archaeological sites\, working with the team\, playing vital roles in historical-cultural-biological contextualization\, or are just plain curious about what archaeologists do\, there are advocacies at hand with these communities\, lest we remain in our ivory towers.\n\nThis Wednesday (12 March 2025)\, Prof. Mary Racelis explores these ideas and leads an interactive discussion on “Engaged Anthropology: Can Archaeologists Engage?” at Seminar Rm. 2\, Albert Hall\, UP Diliman\, from 11:30am to 1:00pm. Join us in-person or via Zoom. This is the first of a three-part series collaboration between the UP School of Archaeology Binalot Talks and the Ugnayang Pang-Aghamtao (UGAT) @ugataghamtao.\n\nAs always\, the Binalot Talks are open to everyone and we even encourage bringing your lunch as you attend.
