FATIMA JOHANNA SANTOS-OCAMPO\nHead\, Council of Inborn Errors of Immunity\, Philippine Society of Allergy\, Asthma\, and Immunology (PSAAI)\nFounding Member\, Asia Pacific Society for Immunodeficiencies (APSID)\nFounding Member\, Southeast Asia Primary Immunodeficiency Network (SEAPID)\nHead\, Immunology Section\, Makati Medical Center\nActive Consultant\, Asian Hospital and Medical Center\n\nReactor:\nMR. MIGUEL CARAG\nPatient perspective\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #236\nMay 2\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\nImmune System: Hindi Lang Proteksyon sa Impeksyon\n\nInborn errors of immunity (IEI)\, also known as primary immunodeficiencies\, represent a heterogeneous group of over 500 genetic disorders that disrupt the normal development and/or function of the immune system. These conditions can manifest with a wide spectrum of clinical presentations\, ranging from subtle\, recurrent infections to severe\, life-threatening immunodeficiency\, autoimmunity\, and autoinflammation. Early recognition and accurate diagnosis of IEI are paramount\, as timely intervention can significantly improve patient outcomes\, reduce morbidity and mortality\, and enhance the overall quality of life. However\, the rarity and diverse clinical phenotypes of these disorders often pose significant diagnostic challenges\, particularly in resource-limited settings.\n\nThis week’s episode is designed to address this critical need by providing a comprehensive yet accessible overview of inborn errors of immunity. We will attempt to demystify the complexities of IEI and empower attendees with the knowledge and practical insights necessary for improved patient care.\n\nOur main speaker this week is Dr. Fatima Johanna Santos-Ocampo\, who is the Head of the Council of Inborn Errors of Immunity of the Philippine Society of Allergy\, Asthma\, and Immunology (PSAAI). She is also a founding member of the Asia Pacific Society for Immunodeficiencies (APSID) as well as the Southeast Asia Primary Immunodeficiency Network (SEAPID). She also serves as the head of the Immunology Section at Makati Medical Center. Our reactor is Mr. Miguel Carag\, who will share his personal journey as an IEI patient.\n\nOur speakers will share their knowledge on the pathogenesis\, clinical manifestations\, diagnostic approaches\, and current management strategies for various categories of IEI. We will discuss the fundamental principles of immune system development and function\, elucidating how specific genetic defects can lead to immune dysregulation. Emphasis will be placed on recognizing the “red flags” of IEI\, which are subtle yet persistent clinical clues that should prompt further investigation. We will also provide practical guidance on initial screening tests\, referral pathways\, and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to patient management. In addition\, this webinar will offer a unique and invaluable perspective through the personal narrative of a patient living with inborn errors of immunity to help underscore the profound impact of these conditions on individuals and their loved ones\, highlighting the challenges they face and the importance of early diagnosis\, comprehensive care\, and psychosocial support.\n\nJoin us in this informative and impactful session\, as we collectively strive to strengthen the circle of care for patients with these often-underrecognized conditions. Together\, we can stop preventable deaths.

However\, the subsequent years\, often referred to as the “next 1\,000 days” and beyond\, are equally formative\, characterized by rapid physical growth\, cognitive maturation\, socio-emotional development\, and the acquisition of essential skills. We will discuss the intricate interplay of nutrition\, environmental factors\, and nurturing care during this extended period and their profound influence on long-term outcomes.\n\nOur distinguished panel of speakers will elucidate the specific nutritional requirements of children aged two to five years\, addressing critical micronutrient needs and the establishment of healthy eating habits that can mitigate the risk of malnutrition and non-communicable diseases later in life. In addition\, they will explore the key milestones in cognitive\, language\, motor\, and socio-emotional development during this stage\, highlighting the importance of stimulating environments\, responsive caregiving\, and early learning opportunities in fostering optimal brain development and school readiness.\n\nWe will also address the potential challenges and vulnerabilities that can impact development during this period\, including exposure to environmental toxins\, the effects of early adversity\, and the crucial role of parental and caregiver mental health. Practical\, evidence-based interventions that can be implemented within various healthcare settings and community contexts will be discussed.\n\nOur main speaker this week is Dr. Cecilia S. Acuin\, who serves as Associate Professor at the Institute of Human Nutrition and Food at the University of the Philippines Los Baños. She is also a nutrition consultant at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center. Our reactor is Prof. Bernadine Jacinto Katipunan\, who is an education consultant from The World Bank.\n\nJoin us as we all deepen our understanding of the dynamic processes shaping early childhood development beyond the initial 1\,000 days. At the end of this webinar\, everyone is expected to gain actionable insights to enhance our ability to promote the health\, well-being\, and developmental potential of young children in the Philippines\, thus contributing to a brighter and more prosperous future for the nation.

SUMMARY:“Ghosts of Elections Past: A Few Historical Notes on the 2025 Midterm Elections”
DESCRIPTION:Join us in this forum on “Ghosts of Elections Past: A Few Historical Notes on the 2025 Midterm Elections” this May 16\, 2026 from 1:30 – 5:00 PM at the Performing Arts Hall (PAH)\, UP Cebu.\n\n➡️ Abstract\n\nThe political overdrive normal in electioneering in the Philippines shifted to hyperspace mode after the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte to face trial by the ICC in The Hague last March. Instead of attempting to keep pace with the light speed of the news cycle\, this talk looks back\, offering some historical perspective. Given Philippine midterms have often been judged in terms of national senate election results\, the results of these 2025 national elections will be examined as to whether they foreshadow “opposition” strength in the subsequent presidential election.\n\nPolitical splits between the country’s political number One and Two predate even the (procedurally quirky) separate election of the president and vice president back to the colonial era battle for supremacy between Manuel Quezon and Sergio Osmeña\, Sr. The Marcos-Duterte feud (which can be traced back to the 1967 midterms) may prove another occasion in which the underdog becomes a longer-term victor\, as Sara Duterte’s future presidential hopes remain very much alive despite the hyperpresidentialist advantage of the ruling Marcos dynasty.\n\nThe talk concludes with some thoughts about Cebu’s seemingly curious political evolution from a historically “yellow” anti-Marcos bastion to (briefly) a pro-Marcos constituency back to an anti-Marcos (but Duterte-sympathetic) stronghold.\n\nThe keynote speaker is Prof. Dr. Mark Thompson\, the Chair Professor in the Department of Public and International Affairs and former Director of the Southeast Asia Research Centre at the City University of Hong Kong – a globally renowned and respected scholar of political science and public administration.\n\nHe will be joined by Prof. Dr. Cleo Anne Calimbahin\, an esteemed Professor of political science specializing in elections\, corruption\, and democracy studies at De La Salle University- Manila\, noted for her contributions on understanding patronage politics and democracy\, as well as the nature and direction of the political parties in the Philippines.\n\n➡️ The forum is open to the public.
