SUMMARY:Notes for Tomorrow Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Notes for Tomorrow\nIn collaboration with Independent Curators International (ICI)\n\n16 December 2025 to 07 March 2026\nUP Vargas Museum 1/F Galleries\nExhibition preview on 16 December 2025\, 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM\nat the UP Vargas Museum\, West Wing Gallery\n\n‘Notes for Tomorrow’ features artworks from around the world brought together in 2020 to reflect on a new global reality ushered in by the COVID-19 pandemic. Coming out of a moment where collective crisis had to be managed through collective care\, Independent Curators International (ICI) turned to 30 curators from 25 countries to consider the issues that have come to the fore in the pandemic’s aftermath\, asking each of them to share one artwork that they believe is vital to be seen today.\n\nThe UP Vargas Museum hosts the exhibition’s first iteration in Southeast Asia\, opening on 16 December 2025\, bringing together works across various geographies\, narratives\, and disciplines that stray from the colonial canon. The selected artists present works that question monumentality and seek the wisdom of localities. In this necessary moment of cultural transition\, each work acts as a source of inspiration from the recent past toward new futures. Rather than proposing a single path forward\, the artworks in Notes for Tomorrow present a network of overlapping solutions.\n\n___\n\nArtists of ‘Notes for Tomorrow’: Madiha Aijaz\, Ernesto Bautista\, Maeve Brennan\, Vajiko Chachkhiani\, Luke Luokun Cheng\, A Liberated Library for Education\, Inspiration\, and Action\, Nothando Chiwanga\, Shezad Dawood\, Demian DinéYazhi’\, Cao Guimarães\, Ilana Harris-Babou\, Rei Hayama\, Amrita Hepi\, INVASORIX\, Tamás Kaszás\, Ali Kazma\, David Lozano\, Mona Marzouk\, Joiri Minaya\, Peter Morin\, Omehen\, Daniela Ortiz\, Kristina Kay Robinson\, Luiz Roque\, Mark Salvatus\, Ibrahima Thiam\, u/n multitude\, Wayne Kaumualii Westlake\, and Yan Shi\n\nSource: UP Vargas Museum Facebook

SUMMARY:“Sustainability of the Tropical Eucheumatoid Seaweed Industry”
DESCRIPTION:The UP Marine Science Institute invites everyone to a hybrid seminar on the Philippine seaweed industry. With NAST Academician Dr. Gisela Concepcion as the Master of Ceremonies\, join us as Dr. Michael Roleda of UP MSI and Co-Founder and Vice Chairperson Rosalind Wee of W. Group Inc. discuss the current state of the country’s eucheumatoid seaweed industry.\n\nEucheumatoid seaweeds such as Kappaphycus alvarezii\, Kappaphycus striatus\, and Eucheuma denticulatum are the center of the Philippine seaweed industry. Analyzing the environmental and socio-economic issues that surround it is critical to securing the industry’s sustainability.\n\n“Sustainability of the Tropical Eucheumatoid Seaweed Industry” will be held on February 9\, 2026\, 10:00 AM. As a hybrid webinar\, guests will allowed to attend at the MSI AVR or through Zoom.\n\nRegister now: bit.ly/MSISeaweedIndustry\n\nThis is a free public seminar that is co-organized by the UP Marine Science Institute\, the Algal Ecophysiology Laboratory\, and W Hydrocolloids\, Inc. SUMMARY:Arts-based Research and Practice: The Case of Oracle Index Presented by Steffen Köhn & Nestor Siré
DESCRIPTION:Arts-based Research and Practice:\nThe Case of Oracle Index\nPresented by Steffen Köhn & Nestor Siré\n\nEvent Details\nDate: February 11\, 2026\nTime: 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM\nVenue: UP College of Media and Communication Auditorium\nAdmission: Free and open to the public\n\nAbout the Presentation\n\nJoin us for an engaging presentation on co-creative artistic research practice featuring Oracle Index\, the latest collaborative project by filmmaker and video artist Steffen Köhn (Aarhus University) and multimedia artist Nestor Siré (Havana/Amsterdam).\n\nThis presentation explores artistic research as a collaborative\, speculative\, and ethnographically grounded practice. The work builds on long-term relationships with research participants and treats speculation not as fiction detached from reality\, but as a method for co-creating possible futures together with those who inhabit precarious\, informal\, and technologically uneven worlds.\n\nOracle Index is set in a speculative Havana infused with the crypto culture of the 2030s. This expanded cinematic narrative takes the form of an imaginary ethnography\, envisioning a Cuba that adopts “futarchy”—a governance system based on prediction markets emerging from the transhumanist milieu—as the foundation of its late-stage planned economy. The project weaves together archival fragments from an anonymous anthropologist’s collection\, including interviews\, field notes\, recordings from Cuban state television\, social media excerpts\, and dream diaries of underground La Bolita players.\n\nSource: UP College of Media and Communication Facebook

SUMMARY:Bakbakan Kung Bakbakan: Ang Nanggugulo\, ang Ginugulo\, at ang Dahas para sa Demokrasya
DESCRIPTION:The UP Third World Studies Center invites the public to Bakbakan Kung Bakbakan: Ang Nanggugulo\, ang Ginugulo\, at ang Dahas para sa Demokrasya\, the third installment of the 2025-26 UP TWSC Francisco “Dodong” Nemenzo Jr. Public Forum Series: Bugso at Bisa ng Magkakasalungat na Pagkilos sa Demokrasya.\n\n📆 DATE: February 11\, 2026 (Wednesday)\n⏰ TIME: 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM\n📍 VENUE: Pilar Herrera Hall\, Palma Hall\, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy\, University of the Philippines Diliman\n📝 REGISTER: https://bit.ly/TWSCBakbakan\n\n“Do I condemn the angry people throwing stones and stuff? No. I may not agree with their tactics\, but I understand their anger\,” this was what activist Renato Reyes said after being hurt in the violent protest that happened in Mendiola on September 21\, 2025. However\, this is a take not everyone shares. Even before the peaceful mobilizations in Luneta and EDSA\, people have been reminding protesters to refrain from engaging in any disruptive act. This appears to be a means to distinguish the Philippine anti-corruption protests from that of the riotous protests that transpired in Nepal and Indonesia. But why? What is it with violent expressions of rage against a corrupt government that Filipinos refrain from it? Why must anger be tempered?\n\nThe conflict between violence and non-violence shows predispositions that influence political organizing. Opinions on the matter may reveal class interests while some expose ideological alignments. Moral mindsets also play a role in threading the dichotomy. This binary has even been used by government actors to sow division amongst the people: those who properly exercise their own democracy and those who do not. This directs us to the lack of interrogation over the glorification of non-violent struggle and the adamant rejection of violent resistance\, especially how it can be weaponized to make democratization unproductive. The post-dictatorship order may have sprung from an exemplary case of non-violent revolution\, but violence still informs our current practices of democracy.\n\nThe third installment of the 2025-2026 Francisco “Dodong” Nemenzo Jr. Public Forum series explores the tensions between violence and democracy. The forum asks what the role of violence is in democracy—or whether it has a role in the first place. We interrogate how violence and non-violence are given meaning by the public and how they fit into the project of democracy. What principles influence the ascription of positive and negative attitudes on violence and non-violence? How does the promotion of non-violent or violent narratives overshadow the lived realities democratization intends to change? What do we have to lose and to gain if we ever choose between violence and non-violence?\n\nℹ️ Read more about the 2025-25 UP TWSC Francisco “Dodong” Nemenzo Jr. Public Forum here: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/16HRevt83h/\n\nSource: UP Twsc Facebook

TERESITA JOY P. EVANGELISTA\nProfessor\nDepartment of Physiology\, UP College of Medicine\nDepartment of Rehabilitation Medicine\, UP – Philippine General Hospital\n\n———————————————————–\n\nWebinar #273\nFebruary 13\, 2025 (Friday)\, 12:00 noon\n“Bakit Masakit Ang Tuhod Ko?”\nOsteoporosis Treatment Options\n\nIn the evolving landscape of geriatric care and metabolic bone health\, the clinical management of osteoporosis has transitioned from a reactive paradigm to a sophisticated\, multidisciplinary strategy focused on proactive fracture prevention and functional optimization. In this week’s episode\, we will discuss the complexities of bone density restoration and musculoskeletal resilience. We will discuss how to bridge the gap between pharmacological intervention and the biomechanical realities of patient mobility.\n\nAs the global population ages\, the prevalence of skeletal fragility necessitates a deeper understanding of the bone remodeling cycle\, specifically the delicate equilibrium between osteoclast-mediated resorption and osteoblast-driven formation. While conventional wisdom often limits the conversation to calcium supplementation and basic screening\, we will talk about the nuances of advanced pharmacotherapy\, including the strategic application of antiresorptive agents and anabolic bone-building medications. We will discuss how a physiatrist’s perspective enhances the standard of care by integrating individualized exercise prescriptions designed to improve postural stability and mitigate the risk of debilitating falls.\n\nOur main discussant is Dr. Teresita Joy P. Evangelista\, a renowned professor from the Department of Physiology at the UP College of Medicine and Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the UP – Philippine General Hospital. Join us for another learning-filled episode on how to effectively reduce the incidence of fragility fractures and enhance the overall quality of life for our patient populations.\n\nTogether\, let us update ourselves on health and medicine!
